Hi everyone! Im still fairly new to this forum and to fitness. I started going to the gym just last week and so far so good! I am staying on track and continuing to go and already feel so much better.
I just have one little problem. About 5 to 10 mins after I am completely done with my workout I get extremely nauseated. And I stay that way for a good 30 mins. I can't even bring myself to eat until the nausea goes away. My workout isn't extreme as I have just started. Only lasts about an hour. I do some pretty high intensity cardio on the elliptical for about 15 mins to warm up. And then usually just work my upper body for the remaining 45 mins. Sometimes only 30 mins. I may do 5 different workouts for my upper body in that time.
During my workout I feel just fine. I was thinking it might be something to do with my diet...but I have no idea what. I try to eat something with both protein and carbs about an hour to an hour and half before my workout and I drink plenty of water. I have stopped counting calories as Im not trying to lose weight anymore. I am just trying to gain some muscle and get into shape.
Any suggestions?
what are you eating beforehand? smartest thing before workout is carbs. avoid fats, and go easy on the protein as they stay in the stomach longer. however have something low-GI because high GI (simple sugars... fruits, sweets, energy drink) hit the blood hard and cause rebound hypoglycaemia.
do you experience any other symptoms other than nausea? the shakes and a cold sweat, and weakness indicate low blood sugar. if you arent used to exercising, it can take the body a while to get used to.... the body finds it hard to separate the whole "im running from a lion" versus "im just going for a jog". physiologically, similar things happen.
Well, I never eat the same thing before a workout because it just depends on where I am. If I go straight from work I will eat a small salad with maybe 4 oz of chicken on it from the restaurant I work at. Or sometimes I just eat a piece of bread. If Im at home Ill have eggs with wheat bread or some cottage cheese. Are these things ok? Any other suggestions of things I could eat? I don't have much to choose from at work because most of it is laden with butter and salt and bad carbs. So maybe something that I could take with me?
I do experience extreme weakness along with the nausea. No shakes or cold sweats though. It does make sense that it will take some getting used to though. I haven't worked out in over a year...so Im definitely still a beginner. I do push myself very hard though. I don't workout like a beginner.
Just curious, why do you only work your upper body?
well for one, I am just really lacking in muscle in my upper body. And for two, when I do cardio I do high intensity with a lot of resisitance so that pretty much takes care of my lower body.
You drink "plenty'' of water? The number one cause of post exercise nausea is being OVERhydrated! Make sure that ''plenty of water'' is really not too much water! Otherwise, you have a decent amount of time bt eating and working out...and as long as you are not drinking soda's and eating sweets before working out [which def can cause post exercise nausea], I would guess that is OVER not under hydration that could be the culprit. Plus, make sure you have a proper warm down after exercising....If you still can't seem to come to a conclusion and it continues..I think a trip to the dr might be helpful!
fitnessgirll- I don't feel like I drink too much water. I take one bottle with me that is 17 oz and I drink the whole thing in the time that Im at the gym. How much is too much? I dont drink soda at all, ever....I think soda is one of the most horrible things you can put into your body. And I keep sweets to a minimum. I don't have a proper cool down though and that might really help! Will something like 5 mins walking on the treadmill be enough?
17 ounces sounds a little much....you drink this in an hour? What do you drink before you go to the gym..I still think you may be drinking too much water...
Yes, at least 5 mins cool down is essential and then a proper stretch. Remember, a stretch does no good unless you hold it for at least 30 secs. If it continues, I do recommend seeing a dr just so he can rule out other possibilities and or give you better advice!
I don't drink much of anything before I go to the gym. Usually I go straight from work. And even if I'm home I usually stop eating/drinking anything after I eat something an hour and a half before the workout.
I would see a dr...BUT I have no insurance so that is kind of a problem. Hopefully my body just needs to adjust. I have only been at this for close to 2 weeks so I will give it a little more time and see what happens.
Thanks for your input! It is much appreciated :o)
Maybe your body just isn't used to the shock of working out yet. You said you were fairly new to fitness, right? My kids' elementary school used to do something called Active Family Night. Basically, it was a chance for families to get together and be active and it was hosted by a personal trainer. I was way out of shape and the guy worked us pretty hard for an hour or so. Hubby and I would always be nauseous afterwards.
Recently, I started the P90X workouts. Even though I've been jogging a few times a week for over 2 months now, I still get nauseous sometimes during the high intensity cardio workout. I just figure it's more than my body is used to handling and I would overcome it as I get stronger.
One more thing. I had a supervisor who was in the National Guard and I also have a niece who ran track for her high school. Both were required to run a mile under a certain amount of time. Both were able to do it but said they got nauseous and puked every time. Apparently, it's pretty common. Something to consider...
