Are you 'resistant to gain weight' because you don't think you need to or because you find it difficult to eat the right amount?

i don't feel like i look too skinny. Therefore, if I gain weight I feel I will look too big (for my own standards)

How you feel is a subjective opinion.  What you weigh is an objective fact.  Right now with a BMI of less than 18, you're underweight which is has a lot of health implications, short and long-term, physical and mental.

Have you consulted your doctor about this?

Jane is correct. Why are you resistant to gaining weight? The dangers of being underweight are numerous. You put yourself at risk of osteoporosis, of loss of fertility if you lose your period, hair loss, electrolyte problems, a weakening of the immune system, low blood pressure, blood disorders such as anemia, heart problems, and even death. The mental woes that come alongside can be just as devestating. Depression is common in undereaters, as well as distorted perceptions and problems like Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

How much do you eat each day? What is your activity level? Most importantly, have you spoken to your doctor? If you haven't, I think you ought to.

i eat roughly 1500 calories a day, up from 1100-1200. i'm slowly trying to increase them. i don't want to do it to rapidly because i've been underweight for such a short period of time i know i will gain all of my weight back, which i don't want. i don't want to be a yo-yoer. i realize i have a problem and i know i'm catching it early, which is good. my mom was anorexic around my age and she is helping me a lot because she understands the mental anxiety of it. i plan on going to the doctor because i've been under a lot of stress, which i think has contributed to my weight loss as well as my calorie restriction. i have also lost all sex drive. no loss of hair or period, though. also, i'm training for a 5k so 3 days a week i run 3 miles and 2 days a week i'll run 1.5

You are eating far too little for your activity level not even factoring your low weight in. Though it is good you are increasing you need to keep pushing that number up. From the amount you are running you need to be eating more like 2300-2500 anyway, and then the fact you need to gain you'd likely need more like 3000 calories as an end goal. You can reach these at your own pace, remember, but an increase of about 300-500 calories a week would be a good rate to go by. I think, though, you may need to cut down on your running because cardio is counterproductive to weight gain, unless you eat all your calories back. I can give you ideas of good things to add to your diet that won't add lots of bulk, if you like.

Glad to hear you are going to your doctor especially given your mum's struggles, and to hear she is helping you before you go far down that road. . And losing your sex drive does come with undereating, believe it or not, though stress is also a large factor in that sort of thing. Do go to your doctor, though, and soon, and talk them through everything. Make a list if you have to and take it in.

LALA basically summed it up, i think youll likely need MORE than 3000 to gain consistantly though.

try and remember, health is not a number on the scale, its being able to LIVE LIFE and all it has to offer!

Just wanted to say, that I'm a lot like you.  I'm very underweight, and I realize that it's unhealthy for me.  But I also don't FEEL as thin as the scale tells me I am, and that makes gaining weight hard for me.  But as hard as it is, it's something that I know I need to make myself do.  My body has definitely given me visible cues that I need to gain - I don't get a natural period anymore, my spine and ribs are disgustingly visible (some days I notice it and am horrified, some days I think there's no problem).  But even if I can't think of any more personal reasons to gain, all of those scary consequences that lalabanana mentioned definitely act as motivation in the back of my head (even though it's hard to shake the "that won't happen to me" mentality).  Also, you mentioned that your mother has a history of norexia.  Family's been another major motivating factor for me to gain - I hate to see how upset my parents (mom especially) have been when I've been at my lowest weights.  Since your mom knows what it's like, she can certainly empathize, but I'm sure it's upsetting to her to see you go through what she no doubt battled to get over.

One last thing, I'm a runner too, and YES you'll definitely need more calories to gain.  I'm gaining very slowly on 2500 now, and will probably have to increase to 3000 soon to keep gaining.

wow thanks for the overwhelming response, guys. it really helps. and it especially helps that no one has gotten preachy, i don't feel like people are talking down to me. that always discourages me from wanting to gain when people are like YOU NEED TO EAT. yeah, i know. thanks. haha. anyway, this is a really supportive forum and i would like to keep it going to help me stay on track mentally. i think it'll help others in my situation too.

and likear, you pointed out some good motivations to gain weight. while i don't think i'm quite as thin as you, i know how you feel and if you need some support or someone to vent to, let me know!

Oh, trust me. Most of the people here won't push it on you particularly as you seem to want to do it and make steps forward for yourself. :] I hate it when people are like ELLIE EAT A BURGER too and I guarantee you a bunch of regulars in the WG forum will agree how annoying that gets! But you are welcome for the support. Like I posted before, if you'd like any advice on what you can add in to make higher numbers let me/us know, but there's lots of good ideas stickied at the top of the forum.
