5'1 Need Advice

Quote  |  Reply
I know this topic has been hit before, but I wanted to revisit it and see what is working for everyone.

I am 5'1" (on a tall day.. :) ), and 113.5 lbs.  My goal is to be 105 by the middle of June.  I am very very new to this calorie counting concept.  I noticed in some of the other threads on this topic, people mentioned that in order to see results, they needed to eat less than the calorie counter estimated for them.

I am asking because I have been at this for 2 weeks now and have only lost half a pound.  I do cardio for at least 30 minutes 6 days a week(more like 45-60min).  I have started working with a personal trainer 3x week for 30 min also.  We don't do a ton of heavy lifting, more using my own body for resistance.

I am sticking to 1200-1400 calories per day, which is what the calorie estimator told me I should to lose the weight.  With all this, I feel like I should get more than a half a pound in almost 2 weeks.  I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.   I have no intentions of eating any less than I am,(for fear of starvation mode), but am wondering if maybe I need to up my calories.  And if so , how much???

So what are you all doing that is working for you?  How many calories a day?  Is that with exercise or not.  Do you add back in your exercise calories? What are you doing for exercise, how often, etc?

Any advice you can offer would be great!  I would hate to work so hard and see no results.  Especially if I am doing something wrong, and a little change could make a big difference.

THANKS for your help!!!

:)

I have not expereiced this yet...but hope to :-) but as we get close to our goal weight our body fights more to keep weight.  We often have a weight that our body doesn't want.  113 isn't a very high weight for you.  Don't consentrate so much on the number as are your clothes fittihng well, are you flabby...muscle DOES weight more.  How you look and feel is the key...not the number on the scale.
I looked at you, and saw myself...like, scarily much so. I weigh the same as you, give or take a pound, and am also 5'1". Especially if you are athletic/active, you can't possibly look bad at 5'1" at this weight. So, don't worry about weight loss, focus on toning, as was previously said. If weight loss is appropriate for your frame, it will come naturally if you continue following a healthy lifestyle such as yours. ALSO: muscle weighs more than fat! I looked better at 115 than a lot of people my height would at 108 or so.

Only 1200-1400 a day?!? and you're so active?!? honestly, if i were you, i'd up that to 1500 if you're at a plateau, because it is very possible that you arent eating ENOUGH. Not that youre eating an unhealthily little amount, but the less you eat, the more your body is gonna savor each calorie rather then use it up. So, don't fret if you get hungry...you really could eat say, one more snack each day, and that might help you to start making progress. Now...it's also possible that you're replacing fat with muscle and you are losing fat which is not coming off as pounds because it is just being converted. Look in the mirror, or better yet ask for an unbiased opinion. The scale can't tell you anything within 15 pounds or so, beacuase everyone's body is different.

Good luck! :)
Hey! Im new to this forum, but have been working out a long time...

I am 5' and I think your goal weight is great.

If you want to see quick results, make sure that EVERYTHING you put in your mouth is healthy...fruits, vegetables, wheat breads and pastas, and lean meats (chicken breast, fish, etc.)...

You seem to have a good excercise plan going, and the only other thing I would add if I were you would be some resistance training.  If you build muscle, you burn more calories per day naturally bc muscle burns more calories than fat.  (It wont bulk you up like ppl think it will, either!)

The best thing that you can do right now is stay consistant.  Some ppl dont see results until wks 4-5.

Just keep picturing yourself in your killer summer bod!

Good luck =)

good advice.. unfortunatly, I do have a lot of flab.  So while 113.5 is not necessarily a bad weight if you look at it on the scale, it is not so good when you look at it on my behind and thighs!  :)  I have had my body fat percentage measured and am ultimately going to go by this number, as well as how the clothes fit. Definitly good advice on your part.

Though I would still like to know what is working for all of you!

Thanks!

Try doing 2 sessions of cardio, one in the morning, and another in the evening. Not every day, maybe up to 4 days a week depending on your energy levels. Are you losing inches yet?

I should not have a problem fitting in more calories.. love that advice! ;) And I am pretty good about keeping snacks, etc to very healthful foods.  Nuts, fruits, veggies.

I agree with the comment about looking better at 115 than friends at 108.  I would be perfectly happy with my body at 115 if I was toned and at a good body fat percentage.  I am not too concerned necessarily about the pounds.. just the fat making up the pounds..LOL..  unfortunatly, I have a decent amount of it that has decided to hang out on my thighs for longer than I should have let it.  My bad!  Time to kick it to the curb and allow muscle to take over.  I will definitely try to add more resistance training into the plan.

Thanks for the advice!

NO- No inches lost yet.. daggone it!  That is what has me curious as to what I might be doing wrong.  I will try the double workout thing tonight.  Thanks for the tip!
I think that you trying to have a good BMI is great and you seem to be active and eating well.  I think where you may be slipping up is that you are expecting results too quickly.  I know the process seems painfully slow but when you are only 8 pounds away from your wish weight profress is often slow.  You seem to have a good outlook about the differences in people's body compositions.  I am only 5'1" tall as well and I know that weight shows on our bodies more than on tall women.  My body fat percentage is 19%, I wear a size 8 and I weigh 138 pounds.

I eat 1200 calories a day 6 days a week, and anything I want on the 7th day.  I work out for 1 hour two times a week with a trainer doing weights, 1 hour one time a week on my own doing weights, and I try to walk 2+miles at least 3 times a week (about 1 hour of leisurly walking)

Through doing this I lost 95 pounds in year 1, 25 pounds in year 2 adn 2-4 inthe last few months.

I wouldn't recommend a huge splurge nessasaraly but maybe your body demands a bi-weeky ice cream sundae in order to keep up the pace losing weight.
