Weight Loss
Moderators: duke3522, devilish_patsy, topanga1485, nycgirl, spoiled_candy, cmillington, coach_k i need some advice to help a couple guys lose weight!!
My boyfriend and two of his friends have begun working out recently. They know that I am all about nutrition so they turned to me to help them on that part of this.
I am excited to help them because its a big part of my life. I got their stats and figured out how many calories they will need to lose. They have asked for a meal plan and everything. I have written down a bunch of tips I know and use.
I am looking for advice with dieting for men though? Two of them are 21 and the other is 19. I have successfully dieted myself, but this could be a little different.
Any tips or advice would be great!

alex, mypyramid.gov can give some excellent advice on what is needed per weight and age and gender. You can put in the stats and it tells you how much of each food group to consume, and gives you charts of foods in that group and how much of each constitutes a serving. It's a great resource to use to meal plan.
be sure to get feedback from them on the foods they enjoy. too many diets have these lists of foods to eat and the reason people can't stay on the diet is because they don't like the foods. eating must be enjoyable -- and with a good variety.
I'd have them with me at the compute when you visit mypyramid.gov, and let them see the food selections for each food group. Or else print out the charts to show them.
good luck . . .

I believe that for most guys simple guidelines are the best - focus on getting enough protein, good fats and complex carbs while avoiding bad fats and sugars. Water is your buddy.
List good sources of protein that don't contain too much saturated fats, list a few handy sources of good fats, explain what kind of products have complex carbs. They should be able to figure out the rest.

Hi Alex,
Well, I'm a guy, and I'm a fairly succesful loser.
Guys losing weight isn't particularly different than gals losing weight except that A) we get to eat more and lose weight and B) it's easier for us to gain muscle (due to increased levels of testosterone)
So, you've figured out what they both need, calorie-wise. I'd work with that. Start there. Over time, suggest they incorporate better eating. They've already started working out, and that's good news! Basically, I'd point you (and them) to this post for ideas :)
Also, finally, suggest they make their own account here. If they have their own specific questions, or need support, we can help them with both :)
