I am in need of on the go breakfast ideas

Quote  |  Reply

I am in need of some easy breakfast ideas, since this is the most important meal of the day. I find my self skipping it because I don't know what to have. I am a mother of 2 (1 in middle school and 1 in high school). I need some quick ideas because my mornings are very busy with getting the kids and myself out of the house and off to school for the day. No suggestion to small...

I like to eat breakfast after I get to work.  I have a protein bar (South Beach) and then a bit later I have a yogurt.

I have a banana for breakfast pretty much every day. Small, tasty and comes in it's own wrapper!

I like protein/energy bars (zone, southbeach, special k, clif, balance - ones with a pretty even distribution of fat/carb/protein to keep me full)

I also like granola bars when I'm in a carb mood (nature valley, quaker, fiber one)

You could also munch on an apple.  *Take a bite*Throw child out door*Take another bite*Fix your hair*Take a bite*Wonder where you put your keys...you get the point.  It's easy to do that with an apple.  Granted, you should be eating something else too (ie, a protein bar!)

I love to make smoothies in the AM. They are super quick to make, and you can get those portable disposable cups with lids so you can take them in the car.

One of my favorite smoothies is: one banana, some fat-free milk, tablespoon or so of peanut butter, some kind of chocolate-flavoring (tablespoon of Nestle chocolate milk mix, Slim Fast powder, protein powder, etc.) and a few ice cubes. Blend for a few seconds and you're ready to go. The above recipe could be adjusted to fit however many calories you want to consume in the AM. The smoothie above works great for me, definitely keeps me feeling full and energized all morning!

Or, you could try some yogurt, frozen fruit and a little juice or milk- although, I find that these types of smoothies have too much sugar for me in the morning.

Another "out the door" favorite: a small tortilla, spread with a little peanut butter and a sliced banana-- you can sprinkle a little cinnamon on top too....yummy and portable! :)

YOGURT and a bar of some sort.  It's something!  i;m a full time working momma w/ a one year old and a husband that sleeps in every morning and doesn't help.

A breakfast burrito!

My husband makes/eats these.  They're perfect because he mass-produces them, freezes them, then nukes them for 30 sec a side in the am.

Scramble 12 eggs.  Mix with 2 cans of drained black beans.  Place some on a tortilla, top with a line of salsa and a small amount of cheese.  Roll, wrap, freeze.

Voila.

Overnight oats.

Soak 1/3-1/2 cup oats overnight in 1/4 cup milk and yogurt (I use a 6oz container of yogurt for calories sake, but you can use less if you want)

In the morning add any combination of:

  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Banana slices
  • Dried fruit
  • Chopped or grated apple or pear (or sliced peaches/plums - whatever)
  • Peanut butter (or other nut butter)
  • coconut flakes
  • honey or jam

If you want to go the dried fruit route, you can actually add that in the night before as well.

Bake up some hearty, healthy breakfast cookies on the weekends with all your favorite goodies (like the ones Rebel mentioned above) to grab and go during the week along with a string cheese or a yogurt.

My breakfast is often either a protein/meal replacement shake, or cereal.  If I've got time to eat at home, I mix up the shake with a banana in the blender.  If not, I just take a water bottle with the dry powder in it, and shake it up at work.

For cereal, I often take a thermos bottle with a half cup of milk in it, and the dry cereal and raisins (usually) to work.  Then when I'm sitting down and getting my computer fired up, I mix them together and munch.

I haven't tried the clif bars for breakfast... They seem too snackish for me.  But I like them... Just haven't had one for breakfast.  But from a nutrition perspective, they should be great, I think.  The breakfast tortilla idea sounds great too!  I'll have to try that one!  Although I might add some red/green peppers and red onions to that as well...  Maybe even a slice or two of turkey bacon.  I love having pre-done meals ready for those times that you just want to grab stuff on your way out the door.  Vastly beats eating out, or scrounging through the fridge/cupboards for something at the last minute.

Meal replacement shakes are fast and easy and great if you aren't actually hungry for solid foods in the morning like me. Sometimes I mix in extra whey protein as well to get a little more. Plus, it's an easy way to get a good serving of dairy in (I use the powders and mix them with skim milk).

i love fiber one choc bars and then either a banana, grapes, peach or some other fruit

I generally will eat yogurt - just grab a spoon and its a good on-the-go meal. Add a banana or piece of fruit and this would make a light, but portable meal.

This actually takes some cooking, but I simply make egg whites and scramble them up with diced tomatoes with green chiles (in a can). This is one of my favorite morning meals. It might take 5 minutes or so, then grab a piece of fruit to go :)

Two slices of whole grain bread, peanut butter, alfalfa sprouts or spring lettuce.
Easy sandwich to make.  Under 300 calories and an A-.

I take a plastic ziploc baggie, toss in some yogurt from the tub, and then add either cereal or granola, and grab some fruit on the side. Add a plastic spoon and get out that door :)

When I work in the morning, I leave a bag of bread in my desk.  We have a microwave at work, and honey for tea.  I nuke the bread, add some banana and honey and have myself a sweet sandiwch :)

1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 diced apple, and 1/2 ounce crushed almonds - REALLY easy to prepare, just quickly slice an apple, put the almonds in a ziplock bag and use something heavy to crush them, put it all in a tupperware container, bring a spoon, and leave. Enjoy with a large glass of water.

I eat a bowl of cheerios with some type of fruit that doesn't require cutting up. Usually blueberries. the 5 minute breakfast and it's about 200 calories. Then I have a granola bar or apple a couple of hours later at work when I get some breathing room.

Maybe you can eat at work? I have a box of Dorset Cereals Museli in my desk draw along with a bowl and spoon. I keep a small bottle of milk in the work fridge. And I have a piece of fruit with it.

If you don't have a fridge/kitchen at work, you could put muesli and low fat yoghurt in a little tub to take in. You could even get this ready the night before. You can even add a tsp of honey to sweeten which doesn't contain many calories.

My usual breakfast after I get to work is a banana, a lite yogurt and a 90 calorie granol bar spread out over the morning.
