I need to eat 3830 cals today? Can that be right?
Can someone check my math, because the number seems really high. Ok i'm a 25 year old guy, large frame 330 lbs. I have it set to sedentary which gives me 2650 a day eat meter. I've started biking to work some days which takes me about an hour each way because i have to stop and restart at intersections, etc so I put in about 45 min of actual biking each way and I took a walk for an hour at lunch. The burn meter gives me a base of 3400 cals + 1721 that I did from activities = 4830 cals burned today. Since you shouldn't have a deficit of more than 1000 cals that leaves 3830 to eat, but right now at 7:30 pm i'm only at 2294, which would mean that I have 1536 left to eat today - can that possibly be right!? With the exception of lunch it's all been very healthy and even that I tried to do better than I used to but I was really hungry (had a regular Honey Bourben Chicken sub at Quiznos :( but walked there and back from the office 20-25 min each way ) If I do need to eat more then does anyone have any suggestions since all days i bike to work will have really high calorie requirements then and i'm hoping to start doing that almost every day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
There is no way that walking and biking burned 1700 calories. No way. You and everyone else on this website would collapse of exhaustion if they tried to burn 1700 calories.

He biked for 90 mins and walked for an hour. It's very possible.
It's possible, but it's probably not quite correct.
Enter the activities and use the new total instead of adding the activities to your base. This will subtract out the time that you spent doing whatever activity so that it's not giving you credit for normal daily activities in addition to the exercise.
1700 is very possible for his size and biking + walking, I burn almost 600 calories w/an hour of biking and i'm about half his size and a woman.
lonepirate if you give us your height it will help us w/the calculations :)
Oh and way to go on all the exercise!
I'm 6'1, and I did add the activities and the 4830 is what the burn meter tells me for the day. I wasn't trying to burn any particular number of calories - just get to and from work and that's what it gave me. Just seems really high but if it's right i dont' want to under-eat and go into starvation mode ( i know i know starvation mode on over 2000 cals - how does that happen?)
Just listen to your body - if you're not overly hungry then don't eat more. Just eat until your satisfied.
Great job on the exercise!
yeah that sounds accurate to me. Your getting a lot of exercise and that's good. Just remember to adjust on the days that you don't exercise as that's a big difference. And make sure to get enough water so your body doesn't feel the need to retain it :)
If your looking for healthy high calorie foods, nuts are a great option or nut butters, they have a lot of calories in a small amount. almonds, pistachios, and peanut butter are some of my favorites :)
At your weight you can easily reach this caloric expenditure when biking. But instead of approximating the travel time, a safer method would be to use a cycle computer on your bike. At the end of the trip just check your average velocity and the travel time (the cycle computer will not count the times when stopped at intersections). Then go and look up the activity in CC, searching by “bicycling” and just select what your average speed was.
Now…you don’t have to eat back all those calories. Just eat until you don’t feel hungry anymore. However, after long rides (5-8 hours and 5.000 – 8.000 kcal or more burned) I recover best by eating plenty of carbohydrates like pasta and cereals.
In fact my biking days are the days when I don’t even keep track of my calories, because it’s just impossible to over-eat
. So if you’ll make this a daily habit and spend 1.5 – 2hr on the saddle at a reasonable speed you won’t even have to bother with CC.

At 220lb you can burn up to 1300 kcal per hour biking, so at 330lb you don't even have to try too much to burn 1700 kcal
.
Have a protein shake with fresh fruit before and/or after you exercise. Put it in a container and take it to work with you and have it when you get to work after your bike ride. I use to hit the protein shakes a couple times a day when I was working out because I'd burn a ton of calories. Whey protein + strawberries (or bananas or blueberries) + skim milk + lowfat yogurt (optional) + ice and put it in a blender.
I see how you can burn that many calories with the biking - looking to start biking to work soon too - but consider that you are only doing it some days. You should time your total trip with all stops and calc your MPH based on the trip distance. Since it sounds like you pack your most intense exercise into the morning and afternoon, you might go with xeonicus's solution of a protein shake. Try that or a smoothie before you leave in the morning to prep and after you get home in the evening to replenish. That should help your body more than just the overall daily caloric intake meter. Also, one or two days of a calorie deficit will not put your body into starvation mode.
i could do 1700 burn, but i just get too bored walking and biking. So i usually stop around 300.
Anyway, never eat to get to a certain number of calories. Eat a well balanced meal that fills you up and doesnt exceed those calories.
Dont force food down because you wont like the feeling afterwards and it may come back up on ya.
I agree that its possible to burn 1700 cals. Biking is at least 500-600 cals in one hr and doing 2hrs thats an easy 1000 right there. the walking maybe a little less or a little more depending on if there were hills envolved. I do think if 3800 cals is too much for your that you should just eat healthy till your full and if your not at your cal max then yay for you that means more cals are being burned(I know can deficit can only b 1000 max but if it happens it happens).
Yah yall are right, I calculated 565 calories burned on a bicycle per hour for a 330 lb person. So about 1130 + whatever you burned on your walk.
My rule of thumb is: eat when you're hungry... stop eating when you get to your limit... if you aren't hungry enough to reach your limit, dont. :)
how tall are you? that does factor into it

this is a good website to figure that out based on height, weight, activity level etc... check it out!
