I love to read .. from fiction to non-fiction, mysteries to romance .. I love to read. It seems like I can't come across a book that "catches my interest." Anyone out there read any good books lately and would like to share??

What are you in the mood for?  Funny, classic, non-fiction, chick lit, something from a specific era?  I read a lot but have a really broad range too so it would be easier if you could give some idea of what kind of thing you're looking for.
I have a whole list in one of my blog entries.  Please feel free to peruse and also leave a suggestion if you have one! :)

I just finished a book called, "The Bluest Eye" and it was a pretty sad book. A father rapes his daughter and gets her pregnant .. I won't ruin just incase you ever want to read it,, but it was one of the "tear-jerking" books. So, maybe a mystery this time .. something to keep me wanting to read it to find out what's gonna happen!! :)

not exactly the lightest reading, but i found these interesting :

Devil's Highway (Luis Alberto Urrea) non-fiction account of a tragic story of illegal immigrants crossing the border.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (John Perkins) non-fiction autobiographical account of a private government contractor sent into developing countries for the sole purpose of entangling them in unrecoverable debt to the good ol' USofA. it'll explain a lot about why countries hate the US so much, and, for example, why folks are always crusading to eliminate foreign debt as a key step towards helping developing nations get out from under corrupt regimes & on the road to a better future for their people.

From Baghdad, with Love (Jay Kopelman) non-fiction story of a marine who found a dog in Iraq.
Oh I remember that one.  I read that a while ago...

Mystery hmm?  I haven't read a good one of those in a while actually.  Let me think for a bit, I'll get back to you :)
I read an absolutely brilliant book a couple of weeks ago! "The Book of Lost Things" by John Connolly! It is a dark pschological fantasy . . . I really really enjoyed it :D!
THere are some great recommendations in this thread.

I subscribe to Reader's Digest Select Editions (http://www.rd.com/selecteditions/) and every 3 months I get a book with 4 books from best sellers.  It gives me a variety that I might not try otherwise.  Sometimes it seems that finding a good book is like trying to find a needle in a haystack! :)

Catch 22 is always great and I just finished Diary by Chuck Palaniuck (sp?) which was CRAZY. I finished it in an afternoon and, granted i'm a quick read, but it was INSANE.

I have a really wide range of books I like to read too...which seems to make it hard to find something as I'm ambling down the aisles in the library.

I recently finished reading The Kite Runner - I'd been hearing about it for quite some time..it's definately a good read - I was hooked the first chapter.

Currently reading Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Mystery?  I love mysteries!  Here are a couple of authors and series that I've gotten really addicted to. (I like books in a series because you don't have to let go of the characters as soon.)

Light/funny tone:  Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Series

Light-to-medium: Robert B. Parker's Spencer series; anything by Dick Francis; anything by Carl Hiassen (funny but a little darker than Janet Evanovich)

Medium-to-dark:  Lawrence Block's Matt Scudder series; Ed McBain's 87th Precinct Series; Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series (or anything by Michael Connelly)

"Finn" by Jon Clinch.  it rocks.
Ok, I second what Meagan (purespark) said... I've read some of that stuff as well and what I did was good.  Otherwise, if you're looking for really classic mystery I've always loved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but that's kinda a taste thing, not everyone does.  When I was younger I also read a bunch of the Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot stuff, loved all of that and they're pretty quick reads...again, a taste thing though. :)

Also, if you haven't ever tried it, you might enjoy some pulp fiction-y/detective type stuff...I loved The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, they're pretty good intros to the genre :)
Thank you all so much for your suggestions .. I am pretty sure I will be able to pick at least one to read! :)
you should read the series by Stephenie Meyers. i believe the first book is Twilight, then New Moon and i forget the last one. they are romance/vampire novels. these books describe my biggest fantasy.

I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, but Khaled Housseini (the same author who wrote the KiteRunner)  It is a good book, too.  Kind of dark, but interesting, I'm about half way through.

Update : I finished it.  It was a great book.  Currently reading Eat, Pray, Love, the one that was on Oprah, like it so far.

A few I have read lately, "THe SUnday List of Dreams," "Trading Up" & "Lipstick Jungle" by Candace Bushnell, "Eat, Pray, Live"- just to name a few.
I love the Prey novels, a detective series by John Sandford. The first one is called Rules of Prey. If you like speculative fiction, "Island in the Sea of Time" by S.M. Stirling is solid. If you like fantasy, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is funny and very entertaining.

Also, Fay Weldon, Doris Lessing, etc.

There's a book I reread recently, "Moon Passage" by Jane LeCompte. I realized that it's something I will keep rereading every five years or so. Ditto with "Waking the Moon" by Elizabeth Hand (though I didn't like her other books).

Just realized that last paragraph might seem like a moon theme. Actually the two books have nothing in common.

Non-fiction: I loved Woman by Natalie Angier. The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker is a must-read for every woman. And honestly there are too many more to name. It really depends on what you are looking for in a book!

(I have about a thousand books at home).
House of leaves by Mark Danilelski: Heres a copy/paste of a review i wrote on the subject before on another website.

Amazing book. It changes the way you read novels, and does to closets what "psycho" did to showers. A great read. Everyone should experience House of Leaves. I wished they would make it into a movie someday!
Basic Story:
A party animal, drug using, tattoo artist finds a novel written by a blind man that died. He types it up to publish and gives the blind man the credit for it. The novel is about a man whos house is larger on the inside than it is on the inside. A closet appears from nowhere and it leads into a vast void dark place that appears to be a mansion within the house. It has stairwells that groan, a spiral staircase that gons down forever, long winding hallways with hundreds of empty rooms, and its all pitch black. They make several trips in there to explore it, and get lost for days at a time.

The books jumps back and forth between the man typing the novel and the novel story itself. The man typing the novel ultimately goes insane himself.

There are end notes, pages printed backwards (need a mirror to read), some parts with one or two words per page, pages with print in sprial form. even the end notes have end notes. Some end notes are 2-10 pages long, they reveal more of the story, so dont skip them! All of the words "house" are printed in blue text.

This is a truely one of a kind book! Anyone who is a fan of the song by "Poe" called "Hey Pretty" will appreciate the book especially on page 88, where the spoken words of her song are printed. MArk Danieleski is Poe's brother! The book he wrote inspired her song! ... Kyrie suggested we go for a drive in her new 2 door BMW coupe...... we slipped into her bucket seats and she took over from there....

I highly suggest this book to anyone over the age of 18. Contains adult language and a lot of adult content. But like I said, its a great book, and well worth the money!
there are 7 totally awesome Harry Potter Books! i love each of them like a child. LOL
