I love to read .. from fiction to non-fiction, mysteries to romance .. I love to read. It seems like I can't come across a book that "catches my interest." Anyone out there read any good books lately and would like to share??

If you like fantasy, I know of a FANTASTIC author. Garth Nix is an Australian writer and his most famous books are the Abhorsen Trillogy, (Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen are the names of the books, in order). This series is written in a completely different world from our own where on half the world, technology exists and on the other half, magic exists. The plot line basically is that there are necromancers who raise the dead and it is the job of the Abhorsen to send the dead back into death. This is a really GREAT series.

Garth Nix's other works are great as well. He is currently working on a series called "The keys to the Kingdom" Which is a seven book series (only 5 have been written so far) about a boy from Earth who has been selected to become the Rightful heir to the "House" which is the center of the universe. Even though this series is written for middle schoolers it is still an extremely fastinating story even for a college student.

Hope this helps!

One book I can tell you NOT to read is Motor Mouth by Janet Evanovich. It is the single worst book I have ever read. I told my daughter she could use it for tinder. She said "did you read the whole thing?" I had to! To make sure it had zero redeeming qualities. The premise is ridiculous, it isn't funny, there isn't even any good sex.

I am enjoying the Harry Potter series. Yes, I'm finally getting around to those. Hey, I work 50+ hours and have 2 kids, a hubby, and 2 dogs! Kiss

I am reading "Life After Death" by Deepak Chopra. Very interesting book!

"The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold (about a girl who is murdered and is looking down from above watching what is going on after her death) - also "Lucky" by the same author (about her true life rape experience).

"The Memory Keeper's Daughter" - a man who sends his one twin baby with Down Syndrome away and tells the mother the baby died.  The nurse then cares for this discarded child (I just started this one, so I don't know many more details yet)

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon is really good, I am on the second book and I hate to put it down!  Very interesting historically, and a great story.  I highly recommend them!
"My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult.  About a girl who is born to be a donor for her sister who has cancer.  It was really good.
I agree with acj.  Don't read anything but the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.  The other series, which are sort of romance novels, are crap.  Stephanie Plum rocks, though.
Go to www.baen.com. Click on the free library. Go to "On Basilisk Station", the first of the Honor Harrington series. You can try before you buy!

Or try "Lord of the Isles" by David Drake. Another excellent series, and again, you can try it to see if you like them without investing a thing!

Hmm, also maybe "The Shadow of the Lion", again the first is free, if you like Harry P., you may like some of these.
I recently read "Eat, Pray, Love", a story (true) about a woman who goes through a particularly difficult divorce and decides to travel to Italy (to eat and learn Italian), then to India to an ashram (to learn yoga and pray), and then to Bali.  It's a GREAT read.

I just finished reading Kaffir Boy: The True Story of a Black Youth's Coming of Age in Apartheid South Africa by Mark Mathabane.

It was incredible.

And I second Picoult's My Sister's Keeper; fantastic, heart-wrenching story.

"The Skinny" by Melissa Clark & Robin Aronson"

I carry this book with me around the house. :)
If you like suspense, I am particularly fond of James Patterson. They are quick page turners, and each chapter is short, which I like. It makes it easy to read a chapter here and there if you don't have much time. Great books!

If you like forensic type books, the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell are really good. I think there was only one of those that I didn't care for as much, but most of them were great!

If you like legal thrillers, I would recommend John Grisham.

If you like FBI action books, I would recommend the FBI series by Catherine Coulter. They are fiction, but written very well!

If you like police procedural, I think Ed McBain wrote the best of those.

If you like motivational or self-help books, I love the Don't Sweat the Small Stuff series and the Chicken Soup For The Soul series.

Have fun reading!!!
I third the motion on My Sister's Keeper. It is a wonderfully well written story. Heart-wrenching and meaningful.

Ok, I have to agree with humorpam on the James Patterson thing...its been my latest kick.  I recently finished the Maximum Ride series, which is a little different than most of his books, since it involves a group of "bird" kids.  But they are really good!  I also love any of them involving Alex Cross.  I'm reading The Big Bad Wolf right now.

Another great suspense/thriller/sci fi author is Dean Koontz.  His older stuff tends to be more with scientific experiments gone wrong, then he went through a psychological thriller stage, and recently its been suspense.  He's also doing a series based on Frankenstein that was originally supposed to be for tv, but he didn't like the route they wanted to go.

On a side note, humorpam...james patterson just came out with a tv series that starts on Friday on abc...the women's murder club or something like that.  It looks interesting :)

She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb, it's great!

Dean Koontz is a must I finished Odd Thomas not too long ago and could not put it down. The Frankenstien series is awesome and I can't wait for the third one in the installment to come out.

After reading this thread I realize how many more books I have to read.

Currently reading "Winning" by Jack Welch.

Junie B Jones

They're awsome and you'll finish each one in 5 minutes!!
LMAO  just kidding!!
Have you read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy yet? I read it over the summer to see what the hype was all about, and I thought it was very very good. If you want a good mystery, I also read Val McDermid's Tony Hill novels recently. He's a psychologist and profiler that helps his local police department catch serial killers. The show "Wire in the Blood" on BBC is based off them. The first book is "The Mermaids Singing".
