Need some help: College starts in the morning! What do I eat?

Quote  |  Reply
College starts in the morning and I don't know what I am going to do for lunch.  SAGA (the college's cafeteria) is more or less all you can eat and the healthy choice always looks gross.  (I actually live on campus in married housing but I don't have time between classes to get to the other side of campus cook a good meal, or heck microwave one, and get back to class so eating at SAGA or The Hive are my only options really.

The Hive is like a small grill but they always have a healthy conversion meal that I can get...tomarrow is Newport on Wheatberry, chips (which can be baked) and a med. drink.  How healthy is this really and what else can I do???

Also what the heck is Newport on Wheatberry???

Thanks for the help.

P.S. I was thinking about starting a thread (if it hasn't been done already) that lists all of our favorite resturants and lists all the healthier options that you can get.

I'm about to be faced with the same problem.  I work full time over breaks, but both my husband and I are going back to school this semester.

I PLAN to make some cold pasta salads with veggies and put them in containers in my book bag to eat for lunch.  I'm a grazer, so I'll also have some fruits and veggies already cut up.  I've tried this before however, and it all fell apart a couple of weeks into the semester.

Since so many people are doing atkins now, a lot of the cafe style places on campuses make these wrap things.  Our school has something called the Ellicotville.  Its any kind of tortilla you want, like tomato, wheat or spinach, with black olives, the shredded lettuce they have left over, bell peppers, etc.  basically all their salad and sandwich toppings.  I tell them to hold the mayo and just add vinegar and black pepper.  Its ok.  You could probably get one of the places to whip up something like that if its not on the menu.
Can you take your lunch with you and just eat it in the cafe there on campus? Or is bringing food in a complete no-no? Sandwiches, fruit, stuff like that travels well ~ I take my food with me each day.
I would take my lunch if I were you. That's what I did in college. Not sure about the Newport thingy but Wheatberry is a type of bread, so I'd think it might be a sandwich. Salads are so easy. I have pre-washed lettuce in one container, chopped up veggies in another container, various cheeses, meats/beans, and dressings, so that I can easily throw together a nice salad every evening, then grab it in the morning. I also love triscuits, fruits, crudite, and yogurt.
Yeah, I have to suggest that you pack your lunch. I've done it for years. It's cheaper and you have more control over what you eat.

You can pre-make your lunch the night before. Get yourself a thermal carrier and maybe a wide mouth thermos. You can take soup, stews, and hot left-overs in the thermos. Use zip lock bags to portion out servings of veggies, fruit, snacks, and such. Make a big salad and carry the dressing separately (I pop for individual packets of dressings to carry)

Best wishes in school!
Thanks for all the ideas about making lunches and stuff....only problem is that taking my lunch might not be so easy because I don't have a refrigerator or somewhere to put it and a packed lunch is really hard to fit in a backbag filled with 50 bls of books (I'm not kidding!!!)....I had a ham and cheese sandwich on toasted wheat bread, half a cup of canadian cheese soup and two small wheat rolls...and of course water to drink for lunch in the cafeteria today.
Does that sound ok???

Also if they have a chicken ceaser salad or the ceasar wraps are those ok??

Thanks
A lot of times the chicken is breaded and fried, or grilled with oil.  And it would probably come with lots of low grade, high fat parmesean cheese.  Also, ceaser dressing is pretty much just fat I think.

Does your school have a gym or athletic building on campus?  Or is the art department open to all students?  Gyms sometimes let you use a locker on a permenant basis for a fee.  And art departments always have lockers for their student's art supplies.  You can usually just slap a lock on an empty one and keep your lunch in there.
