If you keep in the dairy products you'd technically be following a vegetarian diet. Vegans don't use any animal by-products.
I don't know where you live but most places these days offer foods suitable for vegetarians. Chains sometimes put a handy green 'V' next to them on the menu, just in case you're not sure :-) I find Indian restaurants do a particularly good selection of tasty vegetarian options with it being a strong part of their culture. Chinese/Thai restaurants do a nice line in tofu dishes.
Sounds like fun.

Indian restaurants are incredibly veg-friendly, always! I know you said no rice, but there will be delicious curries and breads for you to try.
Also, the website www.happycow.net lists veg and veg-friendly restaurants across the world! It will come up with a lot of recommendations in your area. Most non-Western cuisines have a ton of vegetarian choices, though, and most restaurants will offer a vegetarian option, as long as you call ahead.
I don't know if you cook, but I also recommend thumbing through vegetarian and vegan cookbooks (at the library or a bookstore that doesn't mind browsing). The best encouragement to leave meat out of your diet is to really see the wide, delicious, colorful array of food we enjoy daily. I never preach the vegetarian cause to people. I just cook for them. :-)
