Need help from fellow punk rockers!

Quote  |  Reply

Hello,

I'm personally a big fan of punk rock.

My boyfriend isn't. But he likes metal and other sorts of rock.

We agreed that if I made him a punk mix he would listen to it.

But that's a lot of pressure. It has to be the supreme punk mix.

So I need your help. What should go on this mix?

The only limits? My boyfriend said he really doesn't like the Misfits (talk about making it hard!), so probably nothing by them. He does like Danzig though, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but oh well.

Thanks for any suggestions!!!!!!

Social Distortion!  :)

I'm a metalhead, and I like them a lot.

Metallica's version of 'So What?' is a nice hybrid.

Make him a classics mix.  Go for old school with a closer root to rock.  Dead Kennedy's, Maniacs, Ramones, Sex Pistols - that sort of thing.

My fiance is a fan of Irish punk, and the album that he used to get me to like it was Flogging Molly's Within a Mile of Home.

What's some of the metal bands that he likes?  It might be easier to offer suggestions if we know some more of what he likes.

You might want to try some of the more metal influenced hardcore like Integrity or some of the cross-over stuff like D.R.I.

If he likes metal, my suggestion would be The Casualties. They rock hard!

I think you have to include the Ramones on any supreme punk list, since they very nearly invented it. :)

NOFX, CLASH are my favorites.....

Sex Pistols, The Damned, NoFX, Floggy Molly and Dropkick Murphys.

... How can your boy not like the Misfits? D:

You could try Rise Against, especially their older stuff. Its a bit of a mix between good punk and rock and it might ease the transition for him a little bit :) Also, the Ramones is a must,  and sex pistols.

Bad Religion.

Edit: and Pennywise.

Against Me!  Their song Thrash Unreal is all kinds of awesomesauce.

crackthesky146, I didn't know Nirvana was punk?  They're "grunge" and don't even compare to other ones you mentioned like the Sex Pistols.

If I were you, shuber84, I'd go with Dead Kennedys, The Casualties, Sex Pistols, and maybe some Propagandhi.  I'm sure he's already heard all the good Danzig stuff so I wouldn't put much of that on there since he's already heard it and it won't be as convincing.

I'd stay away from Metallica because they're not punk whatsoever and if you put Nirvana on there, it will defeat the purpose.

Ooh prropagandhi, rise against, against me!, pennywise...all good choices! Oh, Rancid , Lars frederiksen and the bastards, Anti Flag, and 1905(not sure if they are considered "punk" or not) would be good too.

Metallica's cover of 'So What?' is a fair imitation.

I agree with the Irish punk rock, I would say - eve 6, senses fail (kind of punk but they have great guitar work), sublime obvi, dropkick murphies and Rise Against... Most definitely rise against tho!

Thanks for the suggestions!!! Overall, you guys are suggesting mainstream punk bands that I would listen to. My favs? Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion, just to name two.

Someone suggested to list what he likes to listen to, cause it might help, and I think thats a really good idea.

He loves:

Lamb of God

Metallica

I Set My Friends on Fire

The Devil Wears Prada

this band called "I Wrestled a Bear Once" (idk)

Linkin Park

As an aside, and I know it should probably be a new topic, but if you know of any underground punk bands in your area, PLZ let me know about them! THNX!

I LOVE Lamb of God.

I dig Good Riddance, too, as far as punk goes.

Local band worth listening to: Lucky Boys Confusion

I won't repeat a lot of the already good suggestions, but I notice no one's mentioned X Ray Spex.
