I need help finding breakfast food!

Quote  |  Reply

I'm 24 and for most of my life I avoided eating breakfast either because I didn't have an appetite, was scared of eating, or disliked all the major breakfast foods. I've been eating breakfast regularly for the past year to be healthier, but since I was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, soy, eggs, citrus, coffee and tea I'm having trouble finding a variety of breakfast foods.

For a long time, I ate a handful of nuts because I still have little to no appetite in the morning. I found that the nuts were hassle free and gave me more energy (plus they're delicious!). Unfortunately, however, I just got through a terrible ordeal with a kidney stone. I had been eating so many nuts so regularly without getting enough nutrients from other sources to counteract a build up of oxalate.

Now I'm left with fruit and toast but even those are limited because I can't have citrus fruits (I can only eat so many apples and bananas) or many of the toppings for toast. I've tried oatmeal and that's okay for the winter months but now that it's getting warmer...

Anyway, I'm willing to get up earlier to make breakfast if it means I'm getting a nutritious meal to start the day right. Any tips are most welcome.

Welcome to the world of breakfast :). some options that I personally like are:

- oatmeal and blueberries

- oatmeal and honey or rasins/cranberries

- steamed spinach (I like to add a couple of steamed shrimp) in a tortilla, also love this for lunch

- vegetables stirfry in a tortilla (if you eat chicken you can include some strips of chicken)

- I love fried ockros (not everyone likes the feel of this vege fried)

- toast with peanut butter (also good with an added bit of honey)

- I have a wheat allergy, so I like plain Rice Krispy cereal, its surprisingly filling

- fried plaintains (if your not familiar, it looks like a really large banana), these are good with or without toast/bread

- blackbeans and corn in a tortilla or by its self (I add either shrimp or some dried cranberries to this)

- canned tuna lightly tossed with black pepper & salt and olive oil (optional) with either toast or a tortilla (i do love my tortillas for breakfast)

- sardines are also good with bread (i like to add fresh tomatoes)

- during college i loved having a nature valley granola bar for breakfast

- Fruits options that i like include - papaya, pears, plums, some watermelon

- the only meats i eat are seafood, so I will often incorporate some shrimp, tuna or other fish into my breakfast, i will eat them with oatmeal (sounds gross, but its really good) or bread. I prefer my seafood steamed or cooked in olive oil.  (adding a bit of green onion to seafood workes well for me)

these are the main foods that come to mind, i will post if I think of more,

Hope this helped, if u have any questions drop me an email, happy breakfasts

Thanks for the tips! I've been incorporating a few of your suggestions in my breakfast each morning. I had delicious oatmeal and blueberries the other morning and it was delicious. I'm looking forward to baking healthy blueberry brain muffins, too.

You don't always have to eat "breakfast" foods for breakfast.  There is nothing set in stone that says you cannot enjoy a piece of chicken, or fish for breakfast with a good salad and/or vegetables.  I sometimes don't touch "breakfast" foods for months on end. Every now and then I will treat myself with pancakes or waffles.  Even oatmeal is a treat because it isn't one of my regular "breakfast" foods.  This is just a different way of looking at what we eat and when we eat it!

hey girl!! okay, i personally love smoothies! especially since it's the summer, you can incorporate all healthy fruits which are delicious and extremely low-cal. I never add milk or yogurt, but for example peaches, strawberries, and bananas. When you need something else besides fruit, add a tbsp. of some sort of jam or fruit butter (apple butter is great), or of agave nectar. All these are extremely healthy as a snack, they fix your sweet food craving, AND they fill you up until you need to eat again and give you plenty of energy.

Hi ladies,

Am 28yrs old, i just joined CC and am very glad i did, am also trying to loose belly fat and am also allergic to dairy products, so it means my breakfast can't be cereals or do you have any ideas on what one can use when eating cearels?

I use soy or almond milk on cereal. It is also great for cooking, I use it any place one would normally use milk. Hemp, oat and rice milk are also options, though personally I don't really like the flavor.

I use the Soy in cooking and baking and it works wonderfully

It took me years to find one.... I eat the following:

2/3 cup Quinoa Flakes (higher in protein than other grains)

2 tsp ground flaxseed, pumpkin and seseame seeds

100 ml soya milk

It may not be as tasty as off the shelf cereals... but from one who has a wheat and dairy intolerance it does not upset anything and keeps me full until about 11.30/12 and is full of the best stuff!!!
