i want to lose 70 pounds. what excercieses do you recommend for achieving this goal. i have access to a treadmill so should i walk or should i do a diffrent excersise?
Brisk walk, jog, sprint. Brisk walk, jog, sprint. Repeat the cycle. It is more effective this way.
Weight loss is achieved thru a combination of calorie restriction (you have to take in less than you burn) and exercise (increasing muscle mass can increase your basal metabolism).
The "type" of exercise is not as important as the intensity and length of time. A treadmill is a great tool as you can really vary the intensity of your workout and build up your stamina with low risk for injury. Depending on your current level of fitness, start out at a relatively easy 15-20 min walking per day and build up from there. As far as burning caloreis from exercise, in general, walking for 1 hr at a moderate pace will burn 200-400 cals depending on your weight and the intensity at which you are working.
Keep in mind that losing that amount of weight requires long term lifestyle changes that start with learning to eat healthy within your bodies calorie needs. Make sure to use the tools on this site to figure out what your calorie needs are in order to achieve a healthy, consistent loss of 1-2# per week. First, try setting some short term goals for your self that are both measureable and attainable.
Good luck.
At 70 lbs to loose your challenge is likely not going to be which exercise you do, but if you can develop the consistency you will need to manage long term loss. I'm saying this as someone who has for many years tried to loose the 100 lbs I need to loose, I've lost 20 lbs, over, and over, and over... but now for the first time I've been consistent for a year and I'm seeing results.
The first trick is simply to get moving. What do you like to do? If not like, what are you willing to do? If you like the treadmill, then start with that, start with what is slightly challenging for you, you don't need to be red in the face (in fact, that's not ideal), but simply something (one thing, or a rotation of different things) that you can convince yourself to do lets say 4 times a week for at least 12 weeks. If you can do that, then add stuff, mix it up, keep it interesting.
The long term goal should be to increase your basal metabolic rate (BMR). Your BMR is how much energy (calories) you burn simply by sitting there doing nothing. The way to increase your BMR is to build muscle. So on the most bang for your buck high intensity (not high impact) muscle building activities like, squats, push ups, weight lifting are the winners, but they're not going to get you anywhere if you dread doing them and skip exercise because you don't want to. Cardio will take longer, but is great for your heart, and the first trick is to get moving, after you are into the exercise, then challenge yourself more.

Hi - I have lost 72 lb's since February 08 thru a combination of walking and running daily. I started out walking the first two months and slowly built up to running.
As long as you pick an exercise that you like and will stay with you can loose the lb's. Just take it slow and be consistant and you will make it.
If you have access to a gym, the eliptical trainer is pretty good. Its not hard on your knees. It has the same effect as walking on a treadmill...at least thats the experience I have had w/ it.
