I need help!

Quote  |  Reply

I have no idea what to do here.  Hopefully writing this is the bottom for me.  I have been trying to exercise for 10 months.  I do well for a few days and then stop for maybe a legitimate reason and do not get back on track.  I have a TV with cardio videos in my exercise room where I also have an abs, back, and leg machine.  I also have a spinning bike sitting in front of a 62 inch TV with many TV shows Tivoed.  I also have spinning videos in my DVD player.

I am doing well with my diet, having done Weight Watchers and OA meetings since 03/06/08.  I have lost 58 pounds in my first 10 months.  I just cannot get the exercise going.

Anyway, I cannot get on track and exercise consistently.  I am really upset and unhappy about this.  I am beyond frustrated.  I do not begin work until noon, so there is no excuse.

I do not know what to do.  I think maybe I need some accountability.  Maybe if I can contact or call someone before and after exercising?  How do you all do it consistently?  I know what I need to do, but am not willing to do it.

Can someone help me?

Thanks and have a great 24...Al

If your "not willing to do it." than no one can help you but yourself.

You said yourself, you know what you need to do. So get off your ass and do it!

It's hard to get into a new routine. it will get easier after the second week. You need to astablish how many days you will make yourself work out. Write it on the calendar or post sticky notes around saying that you need to exercise.

In the end, you just got to do it. It doesn't matter that you hate it. We all hate it at first. Some of us have always and will always hate it. But if your serious enough about it, than you got to suck it up and get to it.

Do you enjoy being upset, unhappy and frustrated about this?  58 lbs in 10 months is incredible... don't you want to lose more?

It sounds like you might just be bored with your routine.  For me, I like thinking that I'm doing something different at the gym today.  It gets me motivated to get there and get to it.  Maybe switching up your exercise routine will get you excited about working out?  I noticed you didn't mention a real weight training program - how about starting on some free weights?  I would get bored with the same thing over and over again.  I might not go every day as a result.

Ultimately, you're the only one who can hold yourself accountable.  But if the program is fun and the results are good - the motivation takes care of itself.

Thanks for both your posts.  Outside of sports I do not really like exercising.  I feel like a gerbil on a wheel doing treadmills or stair masters.    I had a membership to Bally's for almost 15 years.  I have not gone much in the last three years.  It was a waste of money, so I let it lapse.  I have everything I need at home.  I mean everything.  I did have two workout partners.  One I used to work with and another friend.  However, we are on completely different schedules now.  Anyway, I think home is better for me now, but I just need to do it, like it or not.  Maybe one day I will enjoy it, but I am not sure.    I will be faking it until I make it.  I'll be OK.  Lots of people do not enjoy exercising, but they do it.

If you feel like a gerbil on a wheel with those things, welcome to the "Just say No to Boring Cardio" club!

Put on some rockin' metal and bang your head away, or some hip-hop with a good beat and go clubbin' in your home instead of those exercises in futility. When spring comes around and you can go outside without snowshoes, take a bike ride - meanwhile, go snowshoeing ;)

Oh, and pick up something heavy - plenty of people find that unlike cardio which is boring and frustrating and not all that useful, strength training leaves you feeling powerful, with strong bones and with a whole lot of friends who call you whenever they need something moved ;)

There's your answer. If you have access to adult leagues of any type, go for it! Joining a women's soccer club is what  finally got me back into working out. I played for a couple of years 2x/week and then wanted to perform better, so I started working out more in between games. Now I'm working on losing weight so I can keep playing and running into my 50s (which I hit this year!).

And if all you do is play sports, remember that is a workout in and of itself! You DON'T have to "work out" if you are a busy person playing sports 3x/week! That's great for your overall health (as long as it isn't softball or table tennis, or one of those "sports" that requires little to know effort most of the time).

Tennis, basketball, soccer, whatever--look around for clubs and leagues and go have fun!!

Thanks for all the help.  I completed day 1 today and tomorrow comes day 2.  One day at a time I will be doing it, no matter what!!  My sport is golf, not too strenuous.  However, I am looking into playing early before work on a walking course.

Have a great 24...Al
