i think i need help...

Quote  |  Reply

About a year ago, I started obsessing about my weight. That was when I was 13.

Now, I find myself constantly thinking about my weight. I'm at about 113 lbs and im 5'4''. I eat about 1100 to 1300 cals a day, but i exercise for 2 hrs/ 5 days a week. I burn 400 cals just doing that.

i dont know what to do anymore! im only 14! i shouldnt even be on this site, i know that! But for some reason its the only thing i can think about throughout the enitre  day!

i know i need help since ive considered "other ways" of losing weight other than dieting, but i really dont want to tell my parents about this.

i think that you should consider getting help... i started out the same way and now i  have an eating disorder and it is horrible....   maybe talk to ur parents about seeing a therapist maybe.. therapy does help.  i hope u have a good week!  take care of urself

You're not overweight in the slightest so you don't need to lose any.   At 14 your body is still growing and developing and it needs plenty of good nutrition in order to be able to do so.  Starving yourself and overexercising at the same time has terrible implications for your body and your brain.   Depression and obsession is very common among young people that don't eat enough... especially enough fats.   Talk to your parents about the way you feel and ask for their help.  They're the people who love you most in the world and if you carry on down this path they'll lose their beautiful, healthy daughter and they'll be in terrible pain as a result.

No, you shouldn't be on this site.

thank you guys for the advice.

i told my parents last night and i think things are going to get better. =]

hi brieo. my younger sister had developed an eating disorder at the same age as you are now [she's 18 now] mostly because she saw me gaining weight in high school and didn't want to go through that. Anyway you are so young still shouldn't be worrying about your weight.  As long as you eat breakfast lunch dinner and enjoy everyday activities like say going for a walk with friends, gym class, and so on you'll stay in shape. Don't let yourself get trapped in that mind set that you must be stick thin to be considered pretty.  i hope you will consider therapy and not letting food consume your life. much love - Audrey

Brieo, you are going to want to be aggressive about nipping this in the bud now. Eating Disorders are not cool or hip and will only lead to a lifetime of misery. And potentially a short life-time.

Eating only 1000-12000 calories a day for a teenager will be detrimental not only to your metabolism but also to your long term health.

Calorie Count Plus's mission is to promote healthy and sustainable weight management.

From Mary Hartley, Calorie Count's Director of Nutrition:

"By eating {so few} calories, you will not get enough energy, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other components of food. In time, you could become malnourished, which can cause severe health risks such as respiratory infections, kidney failure, blindness, heart attack and even death."

The calorie minimum is 1200 calories for a female and 1500 calories for a male but that is for adults.  Add 300+ calories if you are a teenager and even more depending on your activity level.  Most teenagers require 1800-2000 calories and even more if they are active.

Remember that the tools on CC are geared towards adults.  Please use the following links that are catered specifically for teens if you are 19yo or under.

  • Are you going to try to eat more and be aggressive about getting healthy again? You have your whole life ahead of you.

i kind of wish i hadnt told my parents now. i know they care about me and everything, but i really dont think seeing a therapist is all that necessary. i think i can get better by myself.

ive listened to some of their advice though. i had some foods that i normally wouldnt allow myself to eat.

its hard to sit at the lunch table and be the only girl eating though.

You said at the outset that you needed help and that you 'don't know what to do anymore'.  So you weren't going to get better by yourself, were you?

Well done for trying new foods.  I'm glad you're listening to your caring parents' advice and I'm very pleased you're seeing a therapist so that you nip the problem in the bud.  If other people at the lunch table aren't eating, you should maybe suggest they need to do the same thing?  Or choose to sit with normal people that eat  (most people do, you know) rather than silly girls that don't?
