Need Ideas for Protein Rich Snacks
I am having problems getting 33% of my calories from protein, which is what my mutritionist is asking of me.
I do fine for including protein in meals, but have probelms getting protein into snacks without adding too many carbs with it!
So I am brainstorming snack ideas and looking for some ideas .....
Edamame
Boiled shrimp
Hummus with veggies
What else?????
Chicken breast. They are good cold and warm. Just cook like 5 of them with a tad bit of olive oil and pepper and you can have those for snacks at any time. I ate two snacks of just Chicken breast today, AND I had cottage cheese with lunch! mmmmmm protein
Cottage cheese is awesome but watch out for that sodium, drink lots of water with it.
Norwegian flat bread only has 50 cals and 11 grams of Carbs. i roll some Turkey slices with mustard and Jalapenos with the flat bread and enjoy a nice low carb high protein snack.
Super lean ham steak that you fry up with a touch of olive oil is also super good cold or warm as a snack.
Promax70 cookies and cream snack bar. high in protein and not too bad on carbs. Plus they make mini 70 cal ones that taste pretty good and have 5 grams of Protein in each one. These are not the best thing since sliced bread but they are a great alternative to all the already mentioned ideas when you are in a hurry. I ordered mine online somewhere
MILK!!
String cheese, peanut butter on toast or a peanut butter and jelly, a handful of nuts (like almonds, sunflower seeds, honey roasted almonds are good if you need a sweet snack). I also love the south beach diet protein cereal bars, they have 10g of protein, and are 140 cals, i like the peanut butter and cranberry almond flavors but they also have chocolate and some other flavors that i haven't tried... also yogurt has a decent amount of protein, i liek dannon light n fit yogurt smoothies for on-the-go snacks.
Cottage cheese (not as bad tasting as I thought)
Egg whites
Grilled chicken
String cheese
mmm protein.

laughing cow...?
Love Laughing Cow Light cheese
If you aren't familiar with it, its located in the dairy/cheese section of the grocery, where all the Kraft cheese and such are. It comes in a little circular container and inside are 8 individually wrapped wedges - only 35 calories per wedge for hte light original.
In fact - last night for my protein rich snack I had:
Dry roasted edamame - 130 calories nad 14 g protein
2 laughing cows wedges spread on 3 oz of deli turkey breast - 160 cals and 16 g protein
Hooray!
With the help of all of you I am getting REALLY close to my protein recommendations from the nutritionist!
Once a week I get a shot of protein by eating a can of water-packed tuna. A 5 oz can of white albacore is 120 calories and 26g protein (only 2g of fat and 0 carbs). After I add a teaspoonful of low fat mayo and hot sauce I count it as 140 calories.
I see a lot of postings for cottage cheese as a high protein food. It's "OK" for you but be careful because cheese is considered a "binding food" like many other dairy products. Research done by those who don't work for the Dairy Association shows that dairy contributes to a sluggish metabolism, constipation, cramping as well as other intestinal issues. But like almost everyone says, everything is o.k in moderation.
Special K Protein Cereal is actually really yummy if you eat it dry with some raisens or dried cranberries. it's 10g of protien for 100 cal. you can also add some nuts to it for a more substantial snack with even more protein.
