I need ideas for super filling foods!
Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to get together a good menu for my boyfriend who is just starting out on his weight loss journey. I've lost about 90 lbs through calorie counting, and he's anxious to get off the extra pounds he's put on over the years.
He tries to practice portion control, but complains that he's always hungry. We are a long-distance couple, so I rarely get to cook for him - he needs something quick and easy that won't leave him starving 20 minutes later. Does anyone have suggestions for any really filling foods that they've noticed help satisfy a big appetite?
Lots of fruit and veggies... also fiber. A good salad is great before eating a main course to limit portion sizes.
Make a big pot of healthy chili (lean ground beef or just different kind of beans... this vegetarian chili is my favourite: http://www.wish.ca/food/recipe/132/) or lasagna should do the trick. It's filling and you can add a ton of veggies.
Veggies and lean protein like grilled fish/shellfish or chicken breast without the skin.
Check out Ellie Krieger from the Food Network. Very healthy, very satisfying meals. And while some are moderately high in calories, it's only the stuff that you eat once and a while anyway, like dessert.
Anyway, she's great. ;D
first of all, congratulations on your 90 lb loss :)!
things that are high in protein and fiber are more likely to keep you full. things like lean meats, egg whites, vegetables, fruit, oatmeal, milk, yogurt, etc are great ways to stay full and healthy.
Brown rice. But good luck, my boyfriend wont touch it!
Soups with a broth base are great! No cream soups! Vegetable, Mexican chicken soup is especially good if he likes spicey, Lentil or navy bean soup is very filling. I have read that any soup without cream but using flour or corn starch to thicken is okay also. You could make soup ahead and give it to him if you are inclined to cook for him.
Any of the dried beans or peas are great with salsa . Really filling and easy to keep in the fridge.
Good luck with it and congratulations on your accomplishments

anything high in fiber! if i were you i woul just google "high fiber food list" theres LOTS of them. good luck!
Canned soup. Some people may balk at the sodium, but excess sodium is usually out of your system pretty quick. Anyway, all of that liquid is VERY filling. Soups are delicious, and are ready to eat in less than two minutes. I also like Healthy Choice meals (meat, veggies, starch, and a fruity dessert for less than 300 calories). I don't think they are quite as filling, despite there being more actual food, but I find it super satisfying to have all of the different foods plus something sweet. When I'm hungry, need a snack, but don't want to spend more than 100-150 calories, I like individual serving bags of popcorn. It takes a while to get through, packs some fiber, and has that whole salty/buttery thing going on. Sometimes I spray smartbalance no calorie butter flavored spray on top for extra gooey-ness.
And congratulations on your weight loss!
Any soups that are made with quick cooking barley are also a good choice. It puffs up while cooking, and is filling.I use it in beef/barley soup. A good low fat/low carb topping is a crunchy item kind of like croutons. My sister found them because she is diabetic, and uses them on top of soups when not just snack on them. They are called Just the Cheese snack? Have you every heard of these?
for a great soup that doesn't taste like it would be lower fat and calorie... Creamy Chix & Wild Rice Soup....homemade but quick! could easily be adapted for crab and/or shrimp also.
Turkey chili is another good one.
Here's a great alternate breakfast sandwich (like the golden arches but better for you) and they are great to make ahead of time and throw in the fridge in individual ziploc bags....then pick it up on the way out to work...throw in the microwave at work for 30 seconds and viola! Breakfast.
I peel and cut bananas in half then put about 12 halves in a ziploc bag. Throw them in the freezer.......in about 24 hours, a sweet alternative to desserts. Satisfies ice cream cravings too!
