Need your input on cake!

I plan on baking my boyfriend a cake for his birthday. He said his favorite was angelfood cake with white frosting. This seems a bit boing, so I wanted to add some other flavor... I was thinking of throwing in chocolate chips, adding a layer of chocolate frosting or strawberries, or something easy.

What flavor should I add? I have never baked a cake before, so simple ideas will be more appreciated... :)

Angel food cake is super light (and low-cal!!) so I definitely wouldn't add chocolate chips or probably anything to the batter, it may muck with the texture.  Maybe serving it with a strawberry/fruit sauce would jazz up the plainess.  I like it with berries and whipped cream, may sound boring, but it's friggen delish.

I think if your bf likes is boring, then do it that way with an extra topping/sauce for a bit more fun if other people/you want it.

check the kraft website, there is a cake called "angel lush" that uses ff cool whip & crushed pineapple

From what I've read, angel food cake is pretty advanced cake to attempt for a first try at baking because they fall while baking really easily, plus you need to whip egg whites so you'd need an electric mixer.

Maybe you could just bake a plain white cake.

I agree with this!

Unless he's expressed love for any other particular flavor (which you could add with an extract), I'd say just make a flavored glaze or sauce as an optional topping. I think raspberry or strawberry would work great with angel food cake, or maybe even something citrus based like orange.

Yeah, I agree with Thermal and lyri!  If he says he likes angelfood with white frosting, that is what he likes.  When I first met my husband, I was always trying to cook fancy things for him.  He was a good sport about it, but he likes things plain.  So I say, keep it simple!  Good luck!

I LOVE angel food cake. It is delish and by far superior to any other cake out there. And not because it is plain and boring - but because it is to die for! Texture and flavour are the best.

My favourite topping on it is actually COOL WHIP (not even frosting) and then on top of that (stick to the frosting though if thats what he likes) I adore crumbled up Crispy Crunch chocolate bar... (you didn't want 'good for you' did you???)

Other equally yummy toppings are strawberries/raspberries/other berries and peaches.  These could be served on the side and added to each slice only as wanted so that if he really only wants the 'plain' he can keep it that way.
