Need input on weight loss

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone! I just need a little input on what I should be eating, and how many calories I need to eat in order to lose weight. I am 19 years old, I am 5'9", and I weigh 143 pounds. I am not sure how many calories I should be eating to lose weight. I do the program "Rockin Body" for 6 days a week, and rest on the 7th day. I also try to limit myself to 1600 or 1700 calories a day but never more than that, I usually end up eating around 1400. I have been doing this for about 2 weeks now. I haven't seen any results but I know I probably won't until about a month. All of the weight I wanna lose is stomach fat. That's where all of the excess fat is on my body, and I just can't seem to get rid of it, along with some love handles. So I was just wondering about the max amount of calories I need to eat in order to lose weight, and how many calories would be too little for my body to run off of.  Thanks!

If you're that active, it's possible you aren't consuming enough calories. If your body feels it's not getting enough nutrients, it will think there's a famine, and it's time to preserve fat stores.

Try getting in closer to that 1600 or 1700 calories daily and see if that helps. 1400 may just not be enough.

Krystine, congratulations on getting a headstart towards health and fitness at a such a young age.  Habits you develop now can last a lifetime.

I'm not familiar with that workout, but if it is mostly cardio I'd switch to only doing it 3 times a week and adding some weightlifting the a couple of other days or on the same days as the cardio, and having more rest.  Muscles only grow and repair on rest days and 48 hours rest is the general rule.  If you are working out intensely every day, your muscles get no time to repair, your results and improvements will diminish and you'll get less and less in terms of increased metabolism and energy burned.  Resting will help build muscle, which increases metabolism and burns more calories.

I'd also look at your diet.  You should be eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fish, beans, nuts, seeds etc.    I think it's especially important to include some protein with each meal when trying to lose weight.  Studies have shown that eating protein at each meal accelerates weight loss and it certainly seems to work for me.

A good combination of diet and exercise will work for you, but a bad combination won't.   Since you're not getting any results, those are the places I would look at first.

Good luck!!!
