Do we need iodized salt in our diets?

My sister's doctor recommends iodized salt.  He stated that goiters will be on the rise since many people now eat sea salt or kosher salt.

The use of iodized salt is still advocated.  Before the introduction of iodized salt, iodine deficiency was common in geographical areas where animals graze and foods are grown and in iodine-deficient soil.  Seafood and seaweed are naturally high in iodine.  Iodine is needed for the synthesis of thyroid hormone.
