I need to start looking for a job.
How long does it usually take to get a job?
Here's my story... I have a few years of customer service experience, my associates degree in accounting and 2 semesters left to my bachelors degree in business administration so I will be looking into jobs that have to do with my experience and education. My husband is in the army and he's getting out soon. We would like for me to move home AND to have a job before he gets home so i'm working on coordinating our schedules now. So how long before him should I move home to make sure I have a job and maybe even a check before him?
Heh....in this economy? A solid 5 months to find a good job. Or more.... It really depends on where you are looking, but recruiters are now much more specific with what they are looking for, and companies have a lot more people to choose from when hiring.
If you can afford to, finish your degree. Two semesters will fly by in no time.
i totally agree with smwhipple. it could take a very long while to find a good job right now. having a complete bachelor's degree along with an associates is what could set you apart from the competition. and now, with this shi**y economy, is the time to do it.
good luck! :)
Unfortunately, I can't wait until I finish my degree. I wish I could but it won't work out. I'm going to apply for the jobs I want first I guess but if they don't want me, i'm prepared to take anything
Make a plan to finish your degree even if you have to transfer to a different college or an online program to do it.
It's going to be very hard for you to find a job. If I were you, I'd go into retail honestly. You aren't going to find a "real job" right now unless you get an in with an entry level sales company or telemarketing or something like that where it's all commission based.
I think your husband is asking a lot of you. Job searching is very hard right now- I think you need a little more support than you'll have if you're living alone.
I'm definitely finishing college. I'm taking a program online for now at least and I will either continue online or transfer to the campus when we move :)
I might do retail...whatever it takes. I haven't looked for a job in so long though that I have no idea it is was going to be as hard as everyone is saying. My husband is giving me tons of support. I'm going to be living with his parents until we get on our feet and i'll be getting the majority of his checks, that's why i'm starting early is because he'll still be working so we'll have the extra money so this way it will be a lot less stressful than waiting until we're both unemployed.
it's unfortunate but true that it's very very hard find a good job these days.
i have a degree, 2 years of experience as an editorial assistant, two internships, and a boat load of extracurricular activities and honors and i don't get call backs for ANYTHING. it's beyond frustrating and borderline humiliating/depressing
it's going to be an uphill battle, but you CAN do it (or at least, that's my mantra these days), just know it could be a while (some say 9mo to a year in a bad economy), and you'd be in a much better position with the degree.
I'm in the same boat.. battling a stiff current ;) so if ya ever need to vent, feel free to PM!

I disagree. There are still jobs to be had in the accounting sector. If you have any bookkeeping experience, you can probably find something clerical, depending on where you are located. Make sure your résumé is updated, and have someone proofread it (errors in a résumé can cost you an interview). I'm an accountant, so if you'd like some tips, please PM me. Good luck!
Agree w/#9. Also check out law firms and financial services (banking, investing, insurance, etc.).
Thanks purespark and lysistrata for giving me hope. That's exactly where I was going search, in financial services. In my hometown their are actually three bank headquarters where I'm hoping to get my foot in the door. They have jobs in banking, operations, accounting, investing, insurance, mortgages, customer service etc. I don't know if it will matter at all but my friend from high school said she can give me an employee referall for one of the banks for whatever position I choose....
Well, the verdict is in. I'll be moving September 15th or that weekend on the 19th. Ahh, i'm nervous!
yay! good luck! :)
(with moving and job searching)
