I need a low calorie but somewhat filling snack!!!
HELP ME!!! I am always hungry around this time of the afternoon...I get out of work at 5 and don't finish cooking till about 630-7...
What can I have for a snack in between that is somewhat filling yet healthy??? I'm eating some doritos at work right now, so I know those aren't the answer!!!
Thanks
(i leave work at 5:30, pick up kid, go home, cook dinner)
@ 5:15 I have 1/2 yogurt + fruit (80 cals) OR 4 pieces of whole wheat melba toast + Laughing cow cheese wedge (85 cals) OR celery/carrots/cucumber dipped in fiesta ranch yogurt dip (made with dip mix and ff yogurt + lf sourcream) = approx 50-60 cals.
When I get home, I have one of the other ones if I'm still munchy-hungry. Some days I don't need one while I'm cooking, but usually on work out days I do. (i eat a few more cals on those days)
I also have the option of the EAS advantage shake (rich dark chocolate ymmmmm) for 110 cals - but the whole shake is too much so if i can't save the other half I just don't bother with it at all. I feel bloated if I drink the whole thing - even if I sip it over 30 minutes.
I like to have small snack size package of the mini baby carrots with 2 tablespoons of hummus. This is about 75 calories and it's easy.
I always need a snack in the late afternoon before I get out of worrk. Things I keep in my desk:
-all natural apple sauce cups
-rice cakes
-different types of granola bars
I also sometimes pack extra fruit or veggies in my lunch specifically for that snack.
I opt for Celery. Raw... Very cheap, and filling and very low on calories.
One package of celery is about $1.50 to $2.00. I usually do two stalks per day and that give me about 6-8 pieces... then I cut those in half and I have 12-14 pieces... The whole bunch lasts me about two weeks.
cheers!
I always have a mini-pitta (75 cals) with a protein filling for example:
- falafel and chilli and natural yogurt (60cals);
- smoked salmon & dash lime juice (25 cals);
- light cream cheese & salad veggies (40 cals).
I prepare 2 or 3 of these in the morning, and have one for 11s and the other one/two at 4 or 5pm.
If I don't have time in the morning to prepare these, I have a protein bar. I usually eat Trek as they're completely sugar free and have added protein and are high in fibre. Due to the high protein and fibre, they're extremely filling so I can usually only eat half (100 cals per half). So this does for 11s and 4pm.
Banana (100 cals) and nuts (50 cals). The combination is high in fibre, and the nuts provide protein and balance out the GI.
Good luck.
fiber one cereal is very filling. so is go lean crunch. both ave a good amount of fiber.
i do baby carrots for a snack often. with the walden farms thousand island dressing which claims to be 0 calorie. sometimes a fat free slice of mozzarella.
fruit works well too.
i was doing the celery in salsa for a while.
a good 200 calorie snack/meal is boca burgers a tiny spray of pam olive oil with dill weed and garlic powder. (70 cal burger - 9 cal spray or thats how i count it)
with a whole wheat english muffin (120 cals) works well. a decent amount of fiber and protien.
the olean chips taste just as good in my opinion and like half the cals i don't know if they make doritoes though...
ok, so i just came across this the other day, while i was trying to decide what, out of all the random things in my fridge, i wanted to put together into something that hopefully turned out to be food.
oh, and did i mention... i had a REALLY big craving for pumpkin pie? well... i did.
so i got some plain canned pumpkin (3/4 cup = 60 calories) and mixed in some pumpkin pie spice to taste, and then, to make it sweet'n'yummy, i added a half a cup of vanilla fat free yogurt (about 50 calories).
oh.my.goodness. it was amazing. and filling too!
plus, it's just a bit over 100 calories. :]
I keep oatmeal packets in my desk drawer for my 3pm-ish snack. Definitely filling (mine are 160cals) and tide me over until dinner time.
my fave snacks are a tomato sliced with fresh basil leaves on top, sometime fresh cracked pepper. Or raw zuccini with salsa. Red/orange bell pepper makes a great snack, a little sweet too. I also like cucumber with mint leaves. Can you tell I have an herb garden? If you really like your chips choose baked tortillas eat half of what you normally would with generous amount of salsa.
- Apple
- Grapes
- Orange
- apple sauce with 1 tbsp of pumpkin seeds
- kiwi
- 1 oz of almonds
- Banana
apples always fill me up. especially when you put them in a little baggie and sprinkle cinnamon over it, which just makes it ten times better!
ditto to the carrots and hummus!
All of these are good - but I wanted to add popcorn. I prefer to air-pop my own, but there are some fairly healthy microwave versions out there. You can eat the whole bag, be stuffed, for only about 150 calories (depending on what brand you get).
Um, a piece of string cheese or a cup of yogurt would give you a bit of protein, or a boiled egg. Protein always seems to end my hunger, where fruits may not. I almost always have a piece of fruit with popcorn or string cheese as my afternoon snack (my most killer craving time), and it usually does a good job of staving off my hunger until dinner.
