I need lunch advise - Japanese

Quote  |  Reply
So Sakura is today's lunch destination.  I know little to nothing about Japanese cuisine.  My goal is to get high protein and low sodium and not walk away hungry.  Teriyaki and tempura sound like something to stay away from...

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!  Lunch is in less than 4hours!

Nymo you know more about healthy eating them me.  But I wanted to say.  I am sooooooooooooo Jealous.
I would suggest anything chicken (without the thick sauce) and rice OR....

Sushi.  I love anything sushi.  I know most people think it's all raw fish but it really isn't.  If you've never had it go for a California roll (usually has (cooked of course) shrimp, cucumber, rice) or a Bagel roll (usually has cream cheese, smoked salmon, rice) Spicy Tuna roll (usually has Tuna (this one is raw, but tuna is sooo good) diced and mixed with a spicy sause and is then rolled in rice.  One roll usually has 6-8 pieces.  Plus it's filling because of the rice and has great flavor.   Hope this helped.
Thanks guys!   I have no problems trying new foods and the idea of raw fish doesn't gross me out or anything.  Actually I saw one of the items on the menu mention eel and that really has me curious!  LOL

Anyone know much about the soups?  The ones on their menu sound like a lot of mashed beans...  Kisa had a yummy looking soup she told me about.   Do the soups usually have high salt content?

Rice kinda scares me just cuz there usually isn't much nutrition content in it unless you know it's whole grain rice.  Just like my small fear of pasta (I tend to go way overboard on no good grains if given the opportunity.)
Well I ordered the lunch sized Sashimi Teishokiu which was a selection of 5 of the chef's choice.  I know salmon and tuna was in there... the other fish I'm really not sure of.  It was all raw fish and rice on the side.  At first I 'tested' too much of the wasabe and learned that was quite an adventure.  I didn't eat much of the rice mostly cuz I really suck at using chop sticks.  LOL

I'm guestimating my portions and my fishys.  I come out with approximately 450 calories and a lot of sodium... damn teriyaki!

I enjoyed it and tryed something new, and that's what mattered today.   =)
If any of the fish had a very smoky flavor that was eel. I love eel.
Wow, they love their tempura and fried here.
Try and start of with some filling but low cal (but high sodium) miso.
The Yosenabe could be ok, depending on the broth. Or the Yaki Nikku. Anything which is to heavily laden in sauce I'd wipe on the rice or a bowl and just not eat it. Maybe some edamame too?
mmmm...sashimi is perfect food in my view...especially salmon.
My suggestion would be: Miso soup (low cal/high protein), Edamame (boiled soybeans, good protein and fiber), then try one or two of the sushi rolls - just stay away from the "Americanized" ones, i.e. the ones with cream cheese.  Try a sushi roll with spicy tuna or the yellow tail is very good.  Maybe one of their special rolls with smoked eel... love smoked eel.
