I have been eating the same salads over and over for like the past month! Does anyone know any good and new salad ideas that i could try!! I would greatly appreciate it!
What have you been putting in your salad? I've been making some variant of this for the past few weeks:
avocado
jicama
apple
grapes
collard greens
romaine lettuce
onions
red cabbage
sunflower seeds (raw and hulled)
Then I mix up a quick vinaigrette and just throw it on there. Yum yum!
Are we talking lettuce/greens salads here? Or all salads?
If you mean lettuce, maybe you can switch up the type of greens...maybe spring mix instead of romaine (or whatever). Or use a new dressing. I recently became obsessed with using chunky salsa instead of dressing. It has reinvigorated my love of salads.
My mom makes unique salads by making them into "chops" - meaning cutting up a little iceberg and a lot of other salad veggies (she uses a food processor slicing blade), and then tossing it thoroughly with dressing. I think giving the salad a good toss in a big bowl before you serve it mixes things up nicely.
Have you tried warm spinach salad? Sometimes when I am just not in the mood for salad, I'll make a spinach salad and literally toss the whole thing in the microwave for 30-60 seconds. It makes a nice change.
As far as other salads, I am a BIG fan of tofu salad (like egg salad) - just roughly mash up extra firm tofu with a fork, mix in a little mayo and mustard and whatever else you usually put in egg salad (I like celery, pickles, and onions). Come to think of it, I bet a big scoop of this would be good on a bed of romaine.
Another fave salad: asian coleslaw. Just chop up a cabbage (or buy the slaw mix already chopped), and make a dressing of sesame (or regular veggie) oil, vinegar (I use white wine vinegar), soy sauce, and asian spices (I have been known to use the seasoning packet from "oriental" flavored ramen and then throw the noodles away!). Put the dressing on the cabbage and top with roasted sesame seeds! You can also put in other goodies like chopped almonds, dried cranberries, celery... but it's good even with just the cabbage.
Good luck!
i always like putting black beans, corn, bell peppers, and salsa on a bed of greens to make mexican-style salad.
I posted this in another forum, but here you go.
Look at restaurant menus and get ideas from some of your favorite dishes. Cobb salad, Caesar (I think they make a veg version?), etc. are pretty common. Experiment with different ingredients and dressings. Also, these are some of my favorites:
- Grilled/roasted vegetable salad (grill or roast in the oven whatever assortment of veggies you like, such as zucchini, asparagus, onions, peppers, mushrooms, eggplant, etc.) served on a bed of lettuce with a balsamic vinagrette. Seeds and sliced almonds are a nice addition, too.
- Mexican salad - romaine lettuce, tomatoes, black beans, corn, cilantro, peppers, green onions, and for dressing I will mash up avocado and mix with salsa and lime juice and pour over. Top with crushed up whole grain tortilla chips.
- Caribbean salad - use the Mexican salad above but take out black beans, avocado and salsa. Add pico de gallo and chunks of pineapples and mangos or other tropical fruits, and use a teriyaki/lime dressing.
- Asian salad - lettuce, water chesnuts, baby corn, shredded carrot, red cabbage, bean sprouts, pea pods or edamame, and chunks of tofu (optional) topped with a ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil and rice vinegar dressing. Throw in some chow mein, toasted sesame seeds or chopped peanuts for a little crunch.
- Thai salad - use the above ingredients for Asian salad but use a little peanut sauce in place of the dressing.
- Wilted salad - For almost any salad, but especially good in the Asian salad, use spinach intead of lettuce and heat the dressing and pour over to make a "wilted" salad. Or heat up V8 juice and pour it over the spinach in place of traditional dressing.
- Greek salad - lettuce, red onions, banana peppers (or pepperoncinis), cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, cucumbers, chickpeas, artichokes, and red/green bell peppers, tossed with a white wine, garlic and oregano vinagrette topped with feta and/or parmesan cheese. Or sometimes in place of the dressing I will pour over a little bit of the juice from the olive jar... Yet another variation on this is to thin out hummus with water/vinegar/lime juice to the consistency of dressing and use that in place of the vinagrette.
- Curry salad - lettuce, strawberries, red onions, and chopped walnuts or pecans with a balsamic vinagrette whisked with curry powder and a little honey or agave nectar. Sweet and spicy!
- Honey mustard salad - lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sliced pears, chopped walnuts or pecans with crumbled blue cheese and a honey mustard dressing. Also good topped with strips of grilled or fried chik'n.
- Beet salad - wrap beets in foil and bake 1-2 hours till tender. Allow them to cool enough to handle then remove the skin and cut into chunks. For the dressing, mix up olive oil, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, chopped green onions, and salt/pepper to taste. Mix and pour over the beets, and top with feta cheese. Serve warm.
- Chilean tomato salad - slice up red onions and soak in water or vinegar for about an hour. Slice ripe tomatoes and top with a lot of cilantro, feta cheese, and the soaked onions. Add salt/pepper to taste and a balsamic vinagrette.
- Cucumber salad - You can also make a similar salad to the above Chilean salad using cucumbers instead of or in addition to the tomatoes.
- Tomato/mozzarrella salad - slice ripe tomatoes and place in a serving dish, alternating with slices of fresh mozzarella. Top with about a 1/2 cup of fresh chopped basil and a balsamic vinagrette.
- Avocado salad - scoop out the inside of the avocado and leave the shells. Mix the avocado with cilantro, lime, chopped tomatoes, a little mayo and Worchestershire sauce (and chopped cooked shrimp if you eat seafood) then put the mixture back into the shells and serve.
- Mushroom salad - thinly slice a bunch of mushrooms and serve over a bed of lettuce or baby spinach with a red wine vinagrette.
- Wedge salad - (not the best nutritional value but soooo tasty!) Cut a head of iceberg lettuce into wedges. Drizzle with blue cheese dressing and add chunks of blue cheese and chopped tomatoes. Commonly served with bacon, but you can use vegetarian bacon flavored bits.
- Coleslaw - thinly slice cabbage, red bell peppers and some granny smith apples and combine in a serving bowl. For the dressing, combine sour cream, mayo, hot sauce, and red wine vinegar. Pour over and toss, then add crumbled blue, goat, or feta cheese.
That list above was amazing fuzzys!
I've been getting into the fruited salads lately...I've been added halved grapes, walnuts, chopped green apple or pear, mandarin oranges, blueberries and craisins etc over baby field greens with raspberry lime vineigrette...it's so refreshing :)
try artichoke hearts. they add sooo much flavor!
chickpeas are yummy too
I've been making this salad a lot recently and it's pretty good:
Baby greens, roasted onions, apples, dried cranberries, walnuts, low-fat mozzarella cheese, and some kind of vinaigrette.
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all that great ideas!!:)
Wow people gave some great ideas. (I'm definitely gonna try that V8 juice as dressing!) But I'm surprised nobody mentioned adding halved cherries. I had the ''salad blues'' for a while too, and after a while I just decided to throw some cherries with spinach, tomatoes, onions, and crumbled crackers (I like a little crunch in my salad, but not crutons) topped with balsamic vinagrette. Yumm.
i actually have tons of random salad ideas but im pretty sure they've been listen :) but if you decide to go with the tofu salad, there's kinds of tofu you can buy with herbs and things in it, no higher in fat, and tastes amazingg, :) i think presidents choice makes it
Still looking for ideas? I had a really tasty one tonight:
Organic baby greens, thinly sliced carrots, apple, cucumber, orange wedges (cut up), chunks of feta and mozzarella cheeses and lemon juice for dressing!! I cheated and used my mandolin slicer for everything (but the greens and feta, of course).
You could also do a veggie salad:
little bit of olive oil in a pan over med heat - thin carrots, corn, peas. Raw broccoli, little bit of cheese (your choice - I like mozzarella) - toss over greens with a tad of italian or oil and vinegar. Sounds weird, but it's pretty good!
Hope I was some help!!
