Need a new Vaccuum - any suggestions?
The only thing that will get me excited to clean is using something that works. SO, why would I use my crappy vaccuum that starts smoking every time I use it?
Been on consumer reports- they only reco vaccuums that have bags. I don't want a bag- want a canister. I would be open to one that is used for pets b/c:
1- we won't be pet free forever
2- my hair falls out all over the place
any suggestions? don't really want to pay 600 for the dyson dc17, but so far that one looks like it has the best suction.
thanks in advance.
Sending some links.
We have a Dyson with the wheel so it can turn around corners easier (took some getting used to though). It's purple, made for people with pets.
Here's a link to their store of the one we use. It was a wedding gift from my husband's aunt. It's really nice.
Edit: If you have stairs, it kinda sucks because it's really heavy. I hate doing the stairs, but otherwise it does the job awesomely.
I really HATE my bagless upright - I don't know if that is what you meant when you said canister, or if you meant the one with a hose attached to a separate unit. Messing with filthy bags was gross - having to dump it out and beat it and scrape it to get it all out of the canister is beyond gross. Mine is a Hoover, and it gets the floor clean enough, though one side doesn't get the edge well because they designed the wheel to go there, so there is no brush in that spot.
My take - ditch the vaccum and get tile
(I wish!)
With gloves on it's not a big deal. Mine usually looks like a furry creature got stuck.
Why clean when you dont have to??
(oh, and slightly related .... omg! animal eating robots!!)
THIS Hoover was a Consumer Reports magazine Best Buy. The Amazon reviewers overwhelmingly agree and Im finding it to be mighty powerful for under $70.
My Hubby swears by the Hoover Windtunnel - he does all the vacuuming. We have a dog that sheds and a cat. It does a good job on the hair.
we buy a vacuum. it works great. for about 2 months. then it stops the spinning and sucking and fur getting.
we have 2 dogs and we cannot keep up!!! I WANT A DYSON!!!
Both of the last vacuums were bagless uprights... one was bissel and the other is a hoover I believe.. the 2nd is specifically FOR pet hair, and worked great - for 2 months or so. The height lever stopped working properly and since the boy does the vacuuming we didn't know until a few months later, by then it broke completely and now I have it rigged up to make it work. so technically, it still sucks fine and spins fine if you have it at just the right height & position.
I cleaned houses between jobs for about 4 months. We'd use the homeowner's vacuums and I got to try out every single dyson they make (they made me vacuum girl)... and I WANT ONE. They are hands down the best vacuums I've ever used.
I've got THIS bad boy, and i like it a lot. my dog sheds like it's his job and it does a great job picking up the hair. and the pet hair attachment works great on the couch. there's also a nifty duster that self cleans after you dust with it! it's bagless and easy to empty.
i find the suction to be really powerful also! i've had it for probably about a year now with no problems. my only disclaimer, i have a rather small apartment, and only two rooms with rugs, so i can't say how this would work or last in a large house.
but for only $150, it's a good buy IMO!
If you can possibly afford a Dyson, get one. It is by far superior. I had a Eureka and a Hoover canister. Both were good. My old roommate had a Dyson and it was far superior to either of the others. At the time I had 2 yellow labs and 3 cats. I couldn't believe how well that Dyson took care of the pet hair. Almost unbelieveable.
Make sure you buy it from some place where you can listen to it. The Eureka I had was so loud. I was kind of glad when the motor burnt out.
So, I had a dyson in my hand yesterday; along w/ a huge stroller. It was the DC17 super-duper pet cyclone. It was a whopping 599!!!! I worked my way up to the scanner at kohls- carrying this huge box in one hand and pushing my julia in the other. You would have thought the woman would have let me get to the scanner first....but no!!
Anyway; Dyson looks like it may be the winner; I'm going to see if I can find it cheaper though. It may be heavy; but I'll consider this to be my upper-body workout lol.
I don't even have a pet YET and there's so much crap all over everywhere.....
Also going to check out that Eureka 4D that jules mentioned.
And glamgram; how do you get your husband to vaccuum? I'm impressed....mine will only do that maybe once a year....
thanks everyone for chiming in!
Check to see if you have any Dyson dealers/authorized repair shops in your area. You can probably get a better deal on one there. Plus you can test it out. See if they'll sell you the floor model at a decent discount.
pick up a kid sized one for julia. teach 'em young I say!!!
Remember with a Dyson, you'll never have to buy a filter. Some of those HEPA filters cost a bunch. This will save you much money over the years.
Great points to both of you!!!!!!! I'll see if there is a dealer in my area. I also found two $100 gift cards from target so I can always put it towards that.
Julia isn't walking yet; but I'm sure a baby vaccuum will help develop those little legs LOL....
I say go with Dyson. I did the same thing when we bought a new vac about two years ago - I don't want to spend the money. So I spent about $250 on a Hoover instead (pet hair version). Well it' s a piece of crap (worked GREAT at first) and everytime I vacuum I wish I had just bought the damn Dyson. I also alternate hoping that it will last just a little longer so I don't have to spend the money, and hoping it will just go out already so I can get a new one.
We have 2 dogs.
I bought the little woman a Filter Queen at a yard sale for her birthday, and she seems right happy with it. Doesn't use it as much as is good for her, but she's a bit lazy that way.
^ anyone see that lung I coughed up laughing at this?

Also...try craigs list for dysons.....that is where I am going to get one when mine no longer sucks :)
