Need to pick out a Christmas Present for a fussy person - Would like suggestions

Quote  |  Reply
I would apprecaite suggestions on picking out a Christmas present for a lady that is very fussy. She's into designer labels etc, very selective about clothes, has upscale tastes in general. We've know each other for several months but are just starting to date after a lot of pseudo-dates.

Normally, I don't do Xmas presents. This will be the first one in say three years I've selected for anyone.

I'm thinking something like a day at the spa but not sure if that is a "good" present or not.

Thanks for your input.

How much are you willing to pay?

Personally, I think a spa treatment at a decent spa is a great idea. Or a gift certificate to one of her favorite places (some people are against gift certificates, but some people REALLY enjoy shopping )

I think a spa day is a great idea! But I would suggest asking around to find out which spa is nice in your area, and checking the spa out in person (just looking around, not examining all the rooms or anything) to make sure it looks good. There can be a huge variation in the quality of spas.

Jewelry is very traditional, but most women still love to get it. A little riskier, if you aren't completely sure of her taste and she's picky.

Or you could go to one of the stores you know she likes, and ask the saleswomen to help you pick out something simple and special (this depends on her taste, but accessories can be a safe bet, although they'll be expensive at a nice place). If you are going to do this, you need to come prepared. Think about her preferred colors and styles in advance so that when the salesperson asks you questions, you can answer them.

The spa day is probably the easiest idea, and I'm sure she'll love it.

If she's really picky about clothes I wouldn't buy her anything clothing/purse/apparel -esque...  She'll probably want to pick stuff out herself instead.  If you want to spend enough to do a spa treatment deal, that sounds like a terrific present! :)  Either way, merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Also, if you've only been together a little bit I'd steer away from jewelry.  Not everyone feels the same way, but I think it's a pretty personal and expensive gift for only a couple months in of dating...
A Spa day sounds great!!

agreed on the spa treatments - great idea!

i would definitely steer away from clothing in general.  women's sizes are all over the place by brand and you definitely wouldn't want to offend.  risky!  jewelry is sometimes a safe bet (all women love jewelry for the most part) but if you're just starting to date i don't know.  it depends alot on cost/what you want the gift to say, etc.

i think the spa idea is great, and them maybe a nice dinner??  good luck!

I probably should have clarified better - sammi is right that it is difficult to pick out clothes type things for a picky person. But if she likes designer labels (and you are willing to drop a bit of money) it is a little easier. If you know what labels she likes, you can go to the store and ask the salesperson if there is anything new (purse or other accessory) that just came in from that designer. But, this takes effort and money and it is still not a 100% guarantee of a good gift.

I would probably stick with your spa idea.

A spa certificate is a wonderful choice.  What woman doesn't like to be pampered?  Send her in and have dinner, wine and candles waiting when she comes home. Wink

Clothes are hard for fussy people, and also hard to fit people.  I'm short curvy/busty and almost everything people have ever bought for me just simply don't fit right.  Even if I like what they got me, I end up having to return them and pick something else out.  Save yourself the headache & her the job of being polite if she hates it.    Good Luck!

The spa idea sounds great, but before you do it, make sure she's a spa type of lady.  Some people have issues with strangers touching them for a massage, for instance (my mom is one of them!).

Asking her friends is usually a good idea!

Good luck!
www.bluefly.com gift certificate?

That site is all about designer labels.

Or maybe a certificate to www.zappos.com, if she's into shoes. Then tell her you're taking her out to a fancy restaurant, and you expect her to pick out a pair of fancy shoes for the occasion. :-)

If you want to go the clothing route, I agree, find out what designers she likes. Then buy something from that designer like a scarf or hat or gloves - something that has no potential fit issues.

I don't know your budget, but anything burberry (esp if it's REAL and not a knock-off) is probably a safe bet:

... the gloves are pretty cute, if you ask me. :-)

Depending on how special she is, you really can't go wrong with a nice pair of diamond stud earrings. ;-)

If that's too rich, a pair of classic earrings in her birth stone might work... pearls are also pretty safe. Think "classic." Classic is always in style.

Oh... and anything cashmere.... a nice cashmere scarf... ?

If she's into her cell phone or ipod, Coach makes some cute cases for those. Check out this page for ideas:

So trainwreck, what did you end up getting for her and did she like it????????
Ended up doing dinner at a nice place of her choice and a night out on the town. She seemed to have fun and enjoy.

I chickened out on picking out any sort of present shortly after posting. Reason, learned the diamond ear rings she normally wears cost $6,000 - I doubt anything I selected would have been suitable.
