THIS IS THE VEGETARIAN FORUM. These people (for the most part, I'm a pescetarian) DO NOT EAT MUSSELS.

Do people not understand what the VEG part of vegetarian means or something?

THANK YOU!

Do you even know how much protein you eat?

I don't understand why you are asking vegetarians for advice on protein if you are mainly interested in animal protein.

BTW you are supposed to eat more carbs than protein. It is the base of the food pyramid.

I'm not mainly interested in animal protein. I need any kind of protein that is not animal protein. I try to eat 50% carbs, 25% protein and 25% fat a day, i KNOW you need more carbs than protein but i end up eating about 60% or more in carbs and i cannot have THAT much. I am a vegetarian, i just eat seafood still, so w.e. im a pescatarian then or w.e. you ppl call it.

Fish is not vegetarian, you are not a vegetarian. Many of us have given you suggestions on vegetarian sources but you haven't really responded to us. Then you go on to trying mussels and posting about it here, in the vegetarian group. I just don't get it. Can't you post about fish in one of the many meat groups?

I'm not saying you are a bad person for eating fish. I just want you to know it's not vegetarian. It confuses others about what we will eat. A lot of people will just assume that I eat fish because someone like you does. This leads to  friends, family and restaurants serving me fish and it makes the situation  uncomfortable for all involved. Especially when somebody goes out of the way to prepare a special fish dish for me and then I have to turn it down. It really leads to hurt feelings.

Keeping your saturated fat intake down is very important. The daily maximum for someone on a 2,000 calorie diet is 20 grams. I would be more concerned about that than getting 25% fat or protein daily. Eating too much protein can cause health problems too. If you are getting 35-50 grams of protein a day, you are eating enough. If you live in the USA you are probably consuming too much.

ok i didnt know that me calling myself a vegetarian will lead to other ppl serving you fish. What a small world. I really don't care about the whole 'labeling' thing, call me whatever you want, i eat seafood and not mammals, thats it. The point is i came here and mentioned i eat seafood but need more ideas of protein, i was NOT asking for animal protein i was simply asking what can i eat, i feel like i am not getting enough of it. I came to the veg. section because i did want to know what non animal protein i can eat, someone mentioned mussels and all i said was i love mussels. Since i eat seafood, thats fine with me. However i am open to learn what else has lots of protein in it that is not from an animal, seafood included. So regardless of if i eat seafood or not, or am a veg. or not, i still need, want suggestions of NON ANIMAL protein. Btw i keep my saturated fat under 10 grams a day. So the fat and the carbs i am getting are good ones. I am all about trying to lose the weight and eating healthy :)

why is there a huge rush to eat protien in this country? where have you seen a protien defincency in the U.S.?

most people need about 50 grams of protein, or 1 gram per KG of your weight. people who activily are building tissues need about 1.2 grams per KG.

(burn victims, injurys, weight lifters, etc.)

too much protien has been linked to cancer, and many metabolic problems.

you probably need more fat in your diet, we definetely need more fat than protien, we as humans use carbs, then fat for energy very easily. Protien, however is rather annoying to breakdown. so a excess in protien will turn into carbohyrate after your body unbonds the nitrogen from the animo acids. THen, it can and will be stored as fat if you eat too much protien.

Fat, especially good saturated fat like butter and coconut are used for many things, espeically abosrbing vitamins and cell function. the typical caveman diet was very fatty meat, with alots of energy, moderate protien. ALso, carbs were on balance with fat, you need carbs and fat, they are your bodys prefered energy sources!!!!

as long as you get enough protien, you dont really need to push it over board.

Thanks... i need to know cause usually i dont get enough protein. I can go a whole day and barely eat any protein so i need to know

If you have a store called Fresh and Easy close by they have THE BEST soy "chicken and steak". They are about 150 calories, 3 grams of fat, 14 grams of protein and 3 carbs. I mix the "meat" in soups, stir fry and tacos. I have tried many meat substitutes- by far these are the best!!Laughing

OK, you don't want carbs.. but you want protein. OK, I'm with the guy who dislikes people who label themselves vegetarian but eat fish/etc. It DOES confuse people because I face people who misunderstand what vegetarian means EVERY DAY. Anyways, I recommend :

 Thank you!

Soy meat!! In the form of...

sausages

burgers

taco meat

sliced "meat" etc etc.

Dairy! Cottage cheese, yogurt, milk...

Nuts as well will provide some protein.

And there's always protein powder, I personally like Kashi Vanilla, but there are a million to choose from. :)

I like the "faux meats" sometimes as well. They work great in Fajitas. I do not care much for them in soups as the "meat" doesn't have a texture that I enjoy when it's not at least pan fried with a little oil.

Oh, and just because it's not a mammal doesn't mean that it's not meat. Fish, crustations and other sea life also feel pain. /had to add my .02

For extra protein (if I need it, which isn't often, if you keep a sensible diet) I just eat some beans or have a pnut butter sandwich. Carbs are not an enemy!! Have some hummus with carrot sticks or cucumbers.

Soy meat!

I totally agree. I don't know how I can ever live without soy meats again. ^_^

Buy some Vital Wheat Gluten flour and learn to make your own seitan (it's easy, cheap per protein gram). Bob's Red Mill, Hodgson Mill and King Arthur are a few brands. You can buy it at better grocers or online.

A 23g protein serving is about 120 calories and 6g carbs.

check it out here: www.amazon.com/s/qid=1224528228/ref=sr_nr_i_1 ?ie=UTF8&rs=&keywords=vital%20wheat%2 0gluten&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Avital%20wheat%20 gluten%2Ci%3Agrocery

Beans and lentils are fine in moderation and provide fiber, tofu is also an excellent source of calcium. Be sure to vary your protein sources: not all soy, not all bean, not all seitan.

I do love cottage cheese I also eat alot of ricotta also very high in protein.

I hate whey protein powder because of the consistency when mixed as directed but I have found tossing in a few teaspoons with yogurt and I don't even notice. Never forget Peanut butter provided you aren't allergic or Almonds any nuts really.

Beans of any variety are excellent myself I prefer cannellini beans and black beans.

Go Lean Cereal is tasty and has 13 grams per cup . Also have you ever tried boca burgers? They also have 13 grams of protein per burger. That is the original vegan ones. I am not vegan I am an ova lacto..hence the cottage cheese and ricotta ...obviously :)

Food is one of those things people can be very fussy about myself included try something new and keep what you like.

yes, GO lean cereal IS amzing. esp for protien.

boca burgers (spicey black bean is my fav) is also great.

and,

chocolate - fake sugar- soy milk is also amazing.

just remember that when getting ur protien,

try not to have more than 20g (or maybe even 15?) at once,

your body isnt used to that amount of protein at once and might say blaugh.

I noticed a lot of suggestions included cheeses that contain a lot of fat.  I had been getting most of my protein from dairy, but after joining this site and seeing how many calories are actually in cheese, I cut back.  I started losing weight, when I had struggled to lose it before.  Be very careful about the amount of fat you are consuming.

I like the idea of the protein shakes, and that is where I currently receive most of my protein.  It's a fabulous idea, but if you're serious about being a vegetarian, then you need to quesiton the source of that protein.  Many protein shakes (pre-mixed and powders) have animal ingredients, and I mean dead animal ingredients, not just dairy.  Anything that contains, "mono and di-glycerides", contains lard (yuck!).  Unless it says it's from a vegetable source, assume it's animal derived.

If you're health conscious, another issue with protein shakes is all the unnatural additives and synthetic sweeteners.  The best protein shakes I have found are through Arbonne International.  They are all natural, sweetened with stevia, and are totally VEGAN!  There's actually an entire weight loss line with shakes and supplements that are very good.  I started using them about a month ago and dropped five pounds.  Honestly I was shocked, because I had stopped running in the mornings (it got too cold, and my bed is so nice and warm in the morning).  I contribute that weight loss to Arbonne's Figure 8 products.  You can read about the products at http://www.gofigure8.com/. ;

I believe in the quality of the products and the ethics of the company to such a degree that I became a consultant, and I am the world's biggest skeptic.  Try it for yourself.  You won't be disappointed.  I wasn't.
