Going to Chinese for lunch today for work.... Any suggestions on the best luncheon to order? I love the sweet and sour chicken over rice, probably really bad, huh? Anyone know which would be lowest cal and not overkill on the sodium?
Steamed Broccoli and white rice.
Agreed, go for steamed items, something with alot of veggies. They will fill you up more, and if they'll take longer to eat (in case you're stuck at the table for a long time talking.) Also, maybe have some green tea in place of appetizer or dessert.
If it's a buffet, try to go for things not fried or floating in alot of sauce or gravy. Although full of veggies, alot of Chinese sauces around them are full of sugar and sodium.
Wonton soup is also so good and low cal/fat....about 130 cals a cup with 2-4 grams of fat depending on where its from and what kind of wontons (chicken, vegi, shrimp). This is also high in sodium though!
spring rolls are lower cal than egg rolls - panda's are about 120 cals each (memory)....3-4 grams of fat. They are fried....but pan fried, less oil than egg rolls.
Pot stickers are low fat if you order than steamed (most chinese places to BOTH steamed or pan fried pot stikers)......for about 6 pot stickers they are around 160-250 cals - for the order....about 5-8 grams of fat. Those stats DO depend on the size of the pot stickers and the the filling - but those are the averages.
Pretty much any soup is low cal/fat....ALL high in sodium thou! chinese soups are NOT creamy.....that plays into that. egg droup soup is low cal, so are most rice/veg based soups.
If you get the wonton soup - order a side of rice (brown if you can) and add it to the soup (wonton soup has a lot of broth) - it will make it more of a meal and the soup will flavor the rice (so you wont need any soy sauce).
Just a warning though, commercial Chinese soups tend to be either super thick from a large amount of starch (Like hot and sour soup and egg drop) or loaded with msg/salt flavorings (like the wonton soup)
But I agree that you should order anything steamed - those are always pretty healthy =]
moo goo gain pan is usually a pretty good choice. Even at PF changs, which starts all of their dishes with a glop of oil and salty, oily, fatty sauces, the moo goo gai pan for dinner is only 700 calories for an entire plate, of which I usually only eat half
Thank you everyone, I ended up ordering the steamed vegetables with scallops over brown rice and had a cup of wonton (minus the wonton's,lol)
Quite honestly I wanted to gag over the scallops as I've never had them at a Chinese Restaurant before....now I know why, lol.
