Mudgirl - I have IBS as well so I have to be very careful. Water is very critical for me as is plenty of fiber - plenty of soluble and insoluble. Ok: warning this will get nasty for a minute...so don't read if you get offended by bm talk....
my gastrointerologist said that if my bm's were like deer or rabbit pellets, I did not have enough fiber and water. If my bm's were larger and softer and easy to pass, then I did. This is how I have to monitor myself. Icky, yes, but true.
One thing that helps my IBS is to drink 1 cup of water with a couple of crakers before a meal. This creates a "slurry" effect in my tummy. Or I have a banana. I cannot eat salad first or greasy food - I will be in the bathroom in 20 minutes! I have found I have to eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Yogurt has really helped me a lot too. The yogurt really seems to have helped a lot. I ate is every day for about 3 motnhs and I think it helped "reset" the balance of my system. I have not had an "oh-my-I-have-to-go-right-now" episode in over 18 months. The constipation still happens quickly though if I do not follow my "rules".
IBS is touchy because everyone has "trigger" foods. Experiment a bit and see what works for you.
best of luck!

Thanks Kallie -
I find that if I eat a BIG salad that I am toast i'll be in the bathroom in 20 mins too and I'll pretty much stay there for an hour or so. I was taking fiber pills a while ago but i found that they weren't really helping in the constipation department. I am so ready to go eat a greasy cheese burger just to go.
I have an appt with my doctor in two weeks to see if there is anything she can do but until then i have to suffer through it.
I don't want to take a laxitive cause i am scared of them cause of the IBS.
Going to have to experiment now WOO HOO sounds like fun.

Yes - do NOT do the laxatives! You'll end up in the bathroom long enough to finish War and Peace!
I have to eat a piece of bread before I can eat a salad or else! Back in 2005, I had to leave the fireworks due to an "episode" and didn't get to the car. I had to hide in some bushes and go. It was SOOOOOO humiliating. So after that, I got lots of books from the library and started figuring it out. My dr. helped some, but as everyone is different, the same things won't work for each.
I don't think anyone that doesn't have it can comprehend the excrutiating pain with IBS. I used to be in such pain I thought I was going to throw up....
feel free to friend me if you need/want to talk more privately about this stuff! :o)

Oh, try a really warm bath. I know that sounds silly, but it can work sometimes. I think it tends to relax you so that you can relax internally and whoops...there ya go! :o)
I don't have IBS but I have had problems going to the bathroom the past couple of months even though I eat alot of fibre and drink water.
I've also added yogourt to my diet and it has helped, I also eat all-bran or fibre 1 for breakfast every morning and it has helped too. I used to eat it at night and it did nothing to help. I thing having that pass through my system before the rest of my food for the day helps pass it through.

Regardless of my diet on any given day, I eat a couple stalks of celery. It seems to help keep me regular.
Apparently yogurt helps lol. Thanks so much for your imput guys it means alot to me. Still nothing and I went and ate this HUGE salad cause when I eat a big one it tends to trigger it. Yeah nothing. I am getting mighty desprate. I don't want to use a laxitive but i just might have to if this keeps up tomorrow, cause my tummy is KILLING ME.
I don't have IBS but do suffer from chronic constipation and took Zelnorm for a little while but it gave me stomach pains more than any thing. I had a GI dr put me on another med because the side effect is diarrhea but it didn't work either.
I found drinking lots of water and eating high fiber foods works the best. Also doing ab exercises - no kidding 10 minutes of crunches does wonders.
You might want to just try a suppository for quick relief. I also suggest "Colon Clenz" its in the vitamin secton at Walmart. For me laxatives don't work and only cause more pain but I found Colon Clenz does wonders.

Thanks guys no nothing yet. i have to go for supper at my grandmas house tonight and her food is usually pretty rich sooo i am expecting that to work if not i am afraid i am going to have to go to walmart tomorrow and get something....at this point anything as long as it comes out. I might try the colen clenz, i am going to do some research on the net first to see which is better for IBS and probably ask the pharmasist.
How about some good ole prune juice? No it isn't the greatest tasting stuff in the world but all you should need is an 8 oz glass maybe 2 and viola! Plus it is all natural. Works for me every time! If you have problems a lot try 4 oz every day as a preventative.
I tried prunes (the babyfood lol) last time i had this happen and it still took two days for anything to happen. shoot me already lol
i was not really constipated before i started watching what i eat. now i'm constantly tight in that department. what helps is high fiber cereal, like FiberOne. Have it for breakfast (good cup of it with skim milk will run ya 200 cal), and it should help..........
I WENT!!! Woo Hoo what a topic huh? lol anyways i had spagetti for dinner and sure enough, i had forgotten that it is one of my trigger foods.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys you all helped. I am sure that i will need them again.
I don't know what i can do different my usual day starts with Kashi- Go lean crunch with skim milk, a fruit for a snack, lunch varies depending on my day, afternoon sanck is a fruit and supper is usually some type of meat and veggies. Evening i snack on fruit as well sometimes some yogurt in with it.
I am just happy that my tummy doesn't hurt anymore i hope that i don't have this happen for at least another week, it sucks for my weigh in.

Sometimes the simplest things in life can make us truly appreciate how good it feels to just simply feel good! :o)
Glad everything worked out! (Pun intended!)
