Do I need to see a doctor to recover from an eating disorder?
Asked by anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 in Eating Disorders

I've just started my recovery of bulimia and anorexia.  I'm really unsure of whether to see a doctor, a psychiatrist, a nutritionist, etc.  I've been through counselling before but I wasn't really ready so it didn't help. I don't know where to go from here.  I feel overwhelmed!

Answer

You are wise to look for professional treatment because eating disorder recovery can be hard. Eating disorders are multifaceted and so you need to find a treatment team.  Some people start with a trusted doctor who can write a prescription for anti-depressants, if indicated, and refer you to high-quality services.  But if you liked your past counselor, you can reconnect, or you can find another counselor by calling an ED treatment center or by searching online.  While you’re waiting for an appointment, read books about the experiences of others who have recovered successfully.
