I need suggestions for apples

Quote  |  Reply
Well, talked to my grocer yesterday and he told me that we will only be getting the Honeycrisp apple for another week or two.  They are my favorite apple, I have at least one a day.

I have never really ate apples before, can someone suggest a comparable apple to the honeycrisp.  I do like the sweet apples and crunchy, don't like soft apples at all.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

My suggestion is to smell them apples at the market. Seriously..smell them. If they are going to taste sweet, they will smell sweet as well. If you can't smell the sweetness of an apple, don't buy it..because most likely it will taste bitter.

A REALLY delicious apple is the Fiji apple. It is soooooo good and sweet. It's crispy as well.

Red delicious apples are sweet and crunchy if you eat them 1 - 3 days after you buy them.

I love Honeycrisp apples too, by the way :) My favorite kind, besides the Golden Delicious (which I didn't mention earlier, because although it is very sweet, it is also soft).
I'm a Granny Smith girl all the way...but I think Fuji, Jonagold or Gala should do the trick...Gala can be crisp, but can also sometimes be soft so watch out, buy them slightly underripe
I really like Granny Smiths, but they are VERY bitter.
Fujis were the only apple for me until I tried the Honeycrisps.  Alas, the Honeycrisps are pretty much gone and I've gone back to the Fujis.
braeburn appples do me!!
i like baked granny smith with cinnamon and splenda yuuuuuuumy
Are Golden Delicious considered soft? Have you tried them before? They are very sweet... my personal favourite!
wow! those are the only ones i really like too....fiji is similar, but still just not the same.  I suggest you stock up!  They last about a month, and then you can just try out some others!  Sorry you'll be missing your apples...I would be the same way!
Fuji is my favorite for eating raw, but they have a short season and are not long term keepers. Braeburn is also nice and crisp, sweet and tart.  I also like ginger gold, but they're hard to find. I don't find granny smith to be bitter, just more tart than most, which makes them great for cooking.   I make applesauce from golden delicious.
Pink lady apples... they're crisp and sweet
I'm with claire- the fujis and braeburns are tart but not sour, and they don't have that "bready" texture that, say, a red delicious has.  I wouldn't eat apples at ALL for years cause nobody'd told me they come in different kinds.  Now almost any apple that is partially red and partially green will do it.  I made a lovely apple thing out of some golden delicious (cubed small), a handful of raisins, some butter...

ok.  Heat some butter in a pan (a tbsp or 2). Add a tbsp of garlic and 1/2 small yellow onion, diced fine.  when onion is transparent, add 2 golden delicious apples, cubed to about the size of your last finger joint.  Add a handful of raisins.  A pinch each of cardamom and curry.  Saute until the apples are soft.  Then add more curry to taste.

That was great with my little pork chop last night.  mmmn.
Braeburn,Fiji, and Gala apples are awesome. Also Red Delicious!
I absolutely love the honeycrisp apples.  A co-worker first introduced them to me a month ago. I bought a fair share then but now they're nowhere to be found. So in pale comparison, the Pink Lady's and Ambrosia apples are also tasty, sweet and crunchy. I'm like dcolstrom, I'm not an apple eater either but have a taken a liking to the honeycrisp ones.
Gala are really crisp and sweet. Have you tried asian pears? Our grocery has them and they are really good! Crisp, juicy - light tasting.
Are honey crisp the yellow ones?
I don't like Red Delicious apples.  Usually I eat Granny Smith, 'cause I like sour things.  But some sweet apples are good.  There's some kind that's red with yellow flecks that was good, but I have no idea what kind it was.

It might be fun to just go through the store one day and pick up one or two of every kind of apple they have, to see which ones taste the best.  I'd like to do that one day.
Pink Lady apples are good, too!!  After that, I love honeycrisp and braeburn!
Look what I found!  http://www.nyapplecountry.com/varieties.htm

It's a nicely illustrated guide to apples!
Pink Lady are my fave too, they're delish!!
One of my favorite snacks is a sliced up Granny Smith sprinkled with salt. I love the combo of the tart-sweetness and the salty.
