*Need Urgent Advice* No period after ED
I briefly had an Eating/Over-exercise Disorder over 1 year ago. My low weight was 107 at 16yrs, 5'7". My current weight is 120, I am almost 18. I exercise for only about 30 minutes a day and eat 2900 calories.
Because I have not had my period in a year and half, my parents have made me progressively cut my exercise. They are now about to make me cut it even more, close to zero. Buy I really need to work out - both for my body and my mental health (I work two jobs plus study for hours a day).
My parents are adamantly opposed to birth control even though I need the hormones and also won't try Provera although my doctor has recommended it. Please, what can I do and still stay sane?
I want to get my period and be healthy, but not at the expense of my mental health.
Thank you in advance,
Catgirl
I know that this is hard for you, but you have to have a certain amount of body fat to have a period. Maybe you are now at a healthy weight, and you are eating enough, but what fats are you eating? How about trying to add in some nuts daily? I found that in order to get to a healthy bf% I definitely did have to stop exercising completely, and then once I hit around 15% I was able to add in some here and there.
Your parents are just worried because you are young and this should not be happening to a teenage girl who is balancing out her body. I do know that I was put on a new form of BC to help my period come along, but if they are against that then why not just try to focus on more healthy fats, and less exercise.
I know that exercise keeps you sane, but honestly I would focus more on your internals right now!!
I could really use any support or ideas
I'm sorry about your struggles, and congrats for overcoming! Perhaps your not getting your period because of stress? It looks like you have a lot going on right now. Talk to your doctor, and if need be, take the birth control pill. If it's necessary for your health, I'm sure you could arrange some confidentiality agreement with your doctor.
My parents may possibly consider artificial hormones for me, so if any of you have used Provera or any BC pills that have worked, I'd like to know about it.
Just to be clear: I am still at a health weight, healthy body fat%, eat lots of dietary fats, exercise moderately, and all tests that my GP has done have come back in normal ranges.......but still no period:(
i am in your position right now, but its only been about 4 months. are you still getting symptoms of pms ever? i always get them but then i don't get a real period. i would give your body more time and my GP said stress is the number 1 reason why girls our age don't get their period...recovering from an ED is stressful as well as not getting a period. even when i was a healthier weight if my period was late i would freak out so much it just plain old wouldn't come. tell your parents to back off and let your body recover on its own. you will not die of this, and if it goes on for a while longer then see a gynecologist.
bottom line--calm down, take off working out for a little bit, and relax, get the parents off of your back...nothing is more unhelpful than people getting on your back about something you are already upset over.
good luck.
progesterone creme helped me get my period back combined with foods with soy and foods with iron. i also took a supplement my naturopatic doctor gave me that did weird things. it was called GI revive, and every time i started taking it my period came back,i had more energy and i don't know "more revived" if that's possible." anyways it was too much for me and i felt like it jump-started my system too fast so i stopped taking it and decided i wanted to bring my body back gradually.
i was given progesterine and another one to take in combination, they worked, got my period, no side effects.
