I need a weight loss buddy! Anyone interested?
The Beck Diet Solution workbook that I'm following says that I need to have a weight loss buddy/coach to check in with once a week for support and accountability. I'd like to be able to do this FOR someone as well. I am a 42 yr. old mom of three who has about 20 lbs. to lose.
Anyone want to go on this journey with me?
Thanks in advance!
hi! I'm looking to lose about 20lbs, too. I'm a 21 (22 in a month) yr old grad student. I'm 5'2" and currently 142--trying to get to 122.
if you're interested in having me as a buddy, just send me a message :)
Yeah!! Let's do it!
I'm 5'2" and about the same weight although I haven't weighed myself in awhile.
Do you have a scale at home? I have one at home that i use everyday, but i only "count" it on friday mornings. I am trying to lose the weight for new years (20 weeks from now...) but I'll settle for being close :)
New Year's is only 20 weeks away???!!! Yikes!
I do have a scale at home (in the closet), and I really don't want to get on it, BUT i suppose if I'm going to be really honest with myself and another person, I will have to get in there and see what the number says.
What are you in grad school for? I have an MA and almost PhD in English, but chose to be home with my kids for the last 10 years. Where do you live? Do you like it? I am in a small town on top of a mountain in TN called Sewanee. I love it here.
Have you been slim before or is this your 1st big push to diet? What diet are you following?
Look forward to hearing from you--
Courtnay
I am starting in a few weeks towards my PhD in Anthropology (socio-cultural). I'm attending the University of Pennsylvania ( so I live in Philadelphia). I just moved here 2 months ago after my undergrad graduation from Notre Dame, so I'm getting used to the big city, but I like it so far. I'm excited for classes to start so I can begin meeting new people. So far it's mostly just hanging out with my bf with whom I live (also a PhD student--molecular biology).
Since I hit puberty (before then I was rail thin) the lowest I've been is 130ish....I've been hovering closer to 137-143 with stints at 156 and 150 (the highest peaks after two different dieting attempts).
Right now I'm on South Beach to kick start my weight loss: early wins = greater motivation. But I'm allowing myself less than one serving of fruit a day (even though the diet eliminates fruit for the first two weeks). I've had success with it before--but this time instead of relying solely on the diet I'm exercising a lot. After the first two weeks of "restriction" (no bread, pasta, potatoes...very little fruit). I'm just going to start calorie counting with a small amount of whole grains. When I lost close to 15 lbs last summer that was from training I did for a triathlon. At the end of the summer (triathlon day) i was at 137 but kept losing during the semester until i hit 129 at xmas.
2nd semester senior year did me no good :( lots of partying, not so much exercising...and here I am again at 143.
What about you?
Good luck with your PhD--Penn is a great school. And Rudy is my favorite movie of all time.
I used South Beach when I had to lose weight from my 3rd child, and it worked pretty well. At the end of phas 1, though, I would have sold my soul to the devil for a bowl of raisin bran! And I do like to have a drink before dinner, most ususally a light beer. Right now, I am using a workbook called the Beck diet solution which uses cognitive therapy to help you succeed. I'm using that in conjunction with the Abs Diet for Women. Now that I'm into my 40s, the pudge has come!
I am starting a new job today--huge in terms of what that means for my life and my family, so wish me luck. I will check in at the end of the day. My lunch is packed: chicken, hardboiled eggs, almonds (I love protein). Wish me luck!
I hope you had a good day! I actually left for work (nannying in the summer) at 7:30 so I didn't read your post until now. I hope your new job is fabulous and that you were able to stick to your diet.
I had a very reasonable day--yogurt with sliced up mango in it for breakfast, a big bowl of leftover lentil soup (that i made and ate for dinner last night) for lunch, and a few slices of a chicken breast for pre-dinner (i had it already made in the fridge for my salads but i got home late... and was too starving to wait until my boyfriend finished cooking dinner...) my real dinner is going to be fish and veggies. Oh and I snacked on some almonds during the day.
:)
Good luck for tomorrow!
Hey Maddie--
This new job takes up ALOT of my time, so sorry if I've been MIA. I am so proud of you that you've kept to your diet and lost some weight. Good for you!
I am going to designate Sundays as my weigh in and check in day with you (not that you wont hear from me during the week.) Sundays is when I'll have some down time at my job and I also get dressed early in the am for church.
Today I've had my protein shake for breakfast (about 260 cals) and a hardboiled egg.
I find myself getting the munchies late in the evening, and that's not so good considering we have lots of Harry and David crackers left over from my wine a cheese party a couple weeks ago. What do you do when you get teh munchies?
Being a nanny is hard. Kudos to you!
Later--Courtnay
i save my daily glass of milk for the evening....so after dinner when i get the munchies later...i have my glass of milk with one tablespoon of my ghiradelli hot cocoa mix---even tho i don't heat it up--it only adds 40 calories (the serving size of the cocoa is 3tbsps with what i'm assuming is more milk, bc 1tbsp makes a standard glass of skim milk chocolatey enough.) that or i have a glass of water with lemon which cuts my appetite.
have a good day!
Hey- mind if I join? I have about 20 to lose as well- I am hoping to lose 12 lbs by the time I hit 30 (in 12 weeks).
What is the Beck solution?
Sure, join in.
The Beck Solution is all about usinf cognitive therapy in self-coaching. It tries to teach you how to think like a thin person and how to stop yourself if you're in the middle of a binge. Interesting stuff. What are you doing?
courtnay--how was your sunday weigh-in?
I may have to look into the Beck solution- how are you liking it?
I am just getting started and doing this on my own right now. I have taken meal suggestions from health magazines and made a list and the plan my meals the night before and writing that out and then next to it write what I actually eat as I go....
I have tried some meal plan diets in the past, but struggle with them not because of the plan so much but because it seems as though the foods don't repeat in the same week so things go bad and also it doesn't include leftovers and I hate wasting food and I don't want to go to the store every day... I know, excuses excuses.
anyhow- my goal is to lose 12 lbs in 12 weeks and then set up a new goal for the remaining 5/6 lbs
From your pics, you both look athletic- what sort of workouts do you like?
Sorry Maddie--my computer was down.
i start at 136.
I like weight training and walking.
how was y'all's weekend?
My weekend was good...yesterday I went on a 14 mile ride....tomorrow I'm planning the same, but hopefully a bit faster.
^i think that answers your question a bit. I have done two triathlons (one last summer and one this)...so there's the swimming, the cycling and the running...except i hate running. i hope as i lose weight running will get easier. i really like cycling and am trying to get into it more full force, since swimming requires more planning and effort than cycling (needing a pool and all....) i also do yoga and pilates here and there.
i don't really count this as an exercise activity, i hardly have time to do it anymore, but i love dancing. a bit of a passion of mine.
my weight this morning was 139.6 ---not so bad considering last sunday i was at 143.4---i think that south beach helps me get rid of the first few pounds (more than likely water weight) really quickly, which gives me motivation to continue. it is TTOM, so i might even drop a bit more at the end of the week when that is all over with.
at the end of this week i'm going home to panama to visit my parents for a week. thank goodness it coincides with the end of the restrictive phase of south beach. my parents are aware of my diet tho and promise to be supportive (usually trips home are centrally themed around me getting to eat all the food unavailable in the states). i'll try to load up mostly on fruits and veggies. *here's hoping*
You probably have a Diet Buddy by now. I have one--she is in another state, too. I am following the Beck Diet for Life. To keep me on track, too, I have just started writing for the Albuquerque Weight Loss Examiner.com. I can't say enough about the Beck behavioral method of weight loss. I have exercised for years (religiously!) and have been pretty good about food choices, but still had a problem. In 20 weeks, I have lost a respectable 20 pounds. It has been so gradual, that the people I see regularly have not noticed. That is the way I like it.
