:( I can never get myself to stop

Quote  |  Reply
I just ate (for dinner) a turkey sandwich and two huge bowls of ice cream ontop. I FEEL SO HELPLESS. I told myself when I was preparing and eating the icecream that I will be sorry for this but it never stops me. I dont know what to do. Do I not eat supper??? I would have something little like 100 cal. pack or maybe a pepper stick (my dad's a butcher). I just don't know what to do. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

I know exactly what you mean. I often fin that I cant control my eating.

But i know one thing... You DO need to continue eating dinner. Just subtract the ice-cream and replace it with something naturally sweet... like an apple, banana, pear...etc etc

and btw: im just like that.....most days i find myself eating well until night... i go from like 800 cals....to like 2500 or 3000 cals just because i cant control myself....i find that a rubber band snapped on my wrist sometimes helps
I found the easiest thing for me was to not have temptations in the house. Instead of buying a big tub of ice cream, I purchased a small single serving container for my treat day.  You can do it :)
Don't buy the ice cream?

I would just skip dinner and keep ice cream out of your freezer until you can control your portions.
Lol I can't even begin to tell you how many times that happens to me. Sometimes I'll eat dinner, then 20 minutes later I'm hungry again, or in need of something sweet, so I reach for something fattening/unhealthy and end up feeling guilty for the rest of the night.

Let me tell you what I do to prevent that.

Eat something filling for dinner. Try to limit your carbs (but do NOT cut them out completely) and eat a LOT of protein. Chicken, fish, whatever your heart desires that is full of protein and not so much fat or carbs (but still enough fat and carbs to satisfy your body). Try eating a salad on the side... or eat a salad maybe 20 minutes before you eat dinner, that way you'll eat less once your actual dinner comes around.

If you're hungry after dinner, wait 20 minutes until choosing something else to eat. If you have a major sweet tooth (like I usually do) try to grab some fruits.
Here's my favorite, somewhat healthy dessert:

-Sliced strawberries (or blueberries/raspberries, anything that ends in "-berry")
-fat free whipped cream (only 20cals per serving compared to 160 for ice cream)
-marachino cherries (in light syrup)

This satisfies your sweet tooth and tastes sinful but is fairly healthy. =) It's much better than the ice cream, that's for sure!

Also... turkey sandwiches are great. The turkey part of it especially. It's full of protein so it fills you up AND makes you sleepy (supposedly... never works for me) so you'll sleep fairly well at night (which is very important for your health).

Well, I hope this helps. Don't forget to exercise! Diet and exercise is KEY! Good luck and keep your head up. There WILL be days where you slip and fall, but all you gotta do is "dust yourself off and try again" =)

NO... DO NOT SKIP DINNER! That's very unhealthy. When you sleep at night, your body goes HOURS without eating when, ideally, you SHOULD be eating every 3-5 hours... so no... skipping meals is NOT healthy.

Instead of ice cream, like I said, grab fruits and some fat free whipped cream or something.

Or, if you desire, get some frozen yogurt or sorbet instead. SORBET not to be confused with SHERBERT. But MODERATION is the idea.

Food has no power over you, it's all inside your head.  YOU are choosing to eat the ice cream instead of reaching your goals.  YOU are deciding to give-in and fail and eat the ice cream.  Don't blame it on the ice cream.
fallingstar - your advice is to skip dinner and not eat the ice cream? that is crazy!

mandz - eat dinner!!! chose the healthiest thing possible if you cannot stand to not eat the ice cream. I find that a serving of wheat pasta is totally satisfies me and only has about 180 calories (plus a bunch of fiber and protien).

If you have to eat ice cream - have you considered trying sorbert? Or fudgcicles? Most fudgcicles are about 100 calories each and very delicious. Even if you eat two - it's not the end of the world :) You could also try the light ice cream, so if you go overboard, it's not as bad...

just some suggestions... good luck to you!!!
oh - I should include a dessert that is very suprising, but really really good. It certainly rivals ice cream -

Slice a peach in half and grill it on your forman grill (or outside grill is even better). Leave it on there until you get grill marks and the peach is tender and warm. Scoop some riccotta cheese right on top (the part skim is just as good as the whole milk variety). Then top it off with a drizzle of honey to sweeten everything up.

It really is an amazing dessert that satisfies the sweet tooth and doesn't make you feel too bad a bout eating it. It is fruit afterall :)

I have trouble with ice cream too, and I'm one of those people who will go way overboard if I deny myself for very long.  One of the tricks that works for me is to buy lower cal ice cream in a single serving container, or on a stick.  That way the portions are controlled for me.  I just get one out the the freezer and feel good about getting to eat the "whole" thing.
the only thing that works for me is a total and I do mean complete BAN on these things in the house. It doesn't mean I never have ice cream but I have to leave the house to have it.

I never binge on the following because they never find their way into my house.:

cookies
cakes
crisps (chips)
ice cream
puddings
chocolate
sweets (candy)

The only tiem I ever get to eat any of those things if I'm out and about and I make a conscious effort not to buy it when I'm in town and am hungry.

My attacks strike when I first get in from work and I used to be able to eat a whole packet of cookies before the terrible guilt set in.
Nowadays, I do still get those snack-attacks but you can't grab what's not there.  Yesterday, I ended up grabbing nuts and raisins, half a tub of cottage cheese, I had two glasses of soy milk, ate some mushrooms.

It was still a binge that lacked self-control but because I limited availability, it meant I was stuffing my face with good food and not bad food.  Had there been ice cream in the house, I am sure I'd have eaten that, instead. It wasn't, so I couldn't.

I agree, the best way to stop eating these things are to stop buying them. I personally know that I am too lazy to get dressed and go out at night to the store to buy these things LOL

I also found that after a few weeks of taking added sugars out of my diet, I no longer craved them like I once had. I used to absolutely crave a candy bar and mountain dew every day - sometimes several times a day. I still have my naturally sweet things, but I dont crave the candy and sugary soda like I used to.

Heres another yummy "dessert" recipe...layer sugar free vanilla pudding with fruit then top with fat free or sugar free cool whip. I did this with bananas and my fanily loved it!

Also, try to fill up more for dinner - def dont skip it in lieu of ice cream! Add veggies to your sandwich...I always stack mine up with lettuce, tomato and cucumbers. Also, make sure your meal has a a little bit of fat in it - Ive heard that helps cravings too.

Good luck & be strong! =)
First of all... without opening up a fight or a can of worms... I've seen fallingstars make several very hostile posts... I'm HOPING it's just tough love and not meant to be ugly.

REGARDLESS...

My "trick" to stop myself from eating the ice cream... I log it before I eat it...  and then I look at what it's going to do to my total calories for the day... and I decide if it's REALLY worth it to have that ice cream and destroy how well I've done so far when I realize that ice cream has as much fat in it as I've had all day.

Usually... it's not worth it!  (On RARE occasions it is!)... and then I'll go eat a sugar free jello if I really need A SNACK!

Totally agree with Kerry about taking sugar out... you want it less the less you eat it... (unfortunately the same is true for DIET soda... it makes you crave sugar, too!  dumb as that is!)
Hi! I noticed you're from MN. Are you okay?
tamarascholtz - I LOVE your suggestion to log it when you have a craving before eating it!! I really think that would work for me! After I eat it, I log it and feel bad about it because my stats were so good before! That is definitely something I'll be doing from now on. Thanks a lot!!!
i seem to have the same problem w/ ice cream... its not really true for the other terribly fattening foods., but ice cream i just cant say no to. i eat a bit, decide that i need to stop, i actually go on and put the ice cream back in the fridge, but literaly 20 mins later im back pulling it out. but ive learnt from experience that the best way to avoid it is not to buy it... b/c if its there.. well its most likely gonna be eaten. i also seem to have a problem when im bored. when i have nothing to do.. i tend to snack. even if im not hugry, ill grab an apple, a pear... and then eventually ill remember the ice cream. so my advice would be dont buy it/buy small quantities and keep  busy.
I have to say, I've noticed fallingstar's little nuggets of wisdom too. Maybe she's feeling a bt down and is lashing out witout meaning it. For now I'm ignoring these little oubursts.
i totally agree with platinum about not buying the stuff in the first place OR if you absolutely can't live without it, get it in pre-packaged portion sizes so you have your single portion then leave it alone.

Tried Skinny Cow stick-bars? Brilliant!!
I would just skip dinner and keep ice cream out of your freezer until you can control your portions.

i dont think she meant to say skip dinner and eat ice cream.

Ps: cookie, your advice helps me a lot and it totally makes sense! thanks a lot!
