New to CC Amateur Musician Singer
Hi to all
My name is Sharron and I love music. I started to play accodion when I was 9 but I really wanted to learn piano. My parents told me that if I did well at the accordion (that the salesman was pushing) for six weeks then I could go to the piano if I wanted. Because of this promise I worked really, really hard and learnt to play quite a few songs in six weeks.
Finally the six week wait was over! I was so happy that now, finally I could get to play the piano. My parents and I went into the office at the music school and I told them all that now I wanted to switch to the piano. I couldn't believe it! They wouldn't let me switch! I was sooooooooooooo disappointed. They all said I was doing so well on the accordion it would be a shame to switch. I could always learn the piano later on but by learning the accordion I would learn the basic music theory so that I could actually choose any instrument I wanted when I got older.
I was so disappointed I didn't want to play any instrument. Damn them all! My parents kept coaxing me and coaxing me and my friends said, "Well at least you will learn the basics right, then you can move onto something else". With the encouragment from my friends and the fact that my parents bribed me by buying me a really cool white pearl with gold accents 120 bass piano accordion I was willing to take the plunge. I continued lessons until I was 14 but then got bored because we were doing group learning and we had to keep going back when the kids didn't get the songs right. Then we would get a new teacher who thought we should be back in book 3 because of some lame kid that couldn't get it right.
Our music school ended up having a recital at Salle Wilfred Pelltier in Place Des Arts in Montreal. That was a very, very big day for me. Heck, only the greats go there. In fact, Diana Krall opened the Montreal Jazz Festival in that very room in 2001? I believe it was.
Did I ever get to learn the piano? I guess you will have to stay tuned for more of the musical adventures of Sharron Myers ![]()
Part II
After Accordion Lessons I had to take Band in music at school. I had wanted to learn to play the flute but was sick the day that the instruments were being assigned so when I got back I had a choice of Tuba or Clarinet. I chose Clarinet and did very well with it. I really am not into wind instruments though so I never pursued it after classes were out.
We started a little church in our community and I was the worship leader. Started out with my accordion because we didn't have any musical instruments in the place. Finally the church was able to purchase a piano and an organ. I of course wanted to learn to play the piano, but the minister gave the free piano lessons to another girl (who he quickly ran away with) and I got to learn the organ. We then ended up moving to the local gym to have services with our new minister who took over. The only instrument they had there was a piano, so finally I taught myself how to play using simple chords and octaves with the left hand. I was soooooooooo happy. I don't play like a professional but I love playing, especially the old upright pianos. They have such a lovely timbre to them. I tried taking some piano lessons and was doing very well with them but it only lasted a month or so and I had to give it up for financial reasons.
SO yes, I did learn to play piano and did many singing solos. I also write Christian songs. I have written about 35 now. I just wait for the inspiration, I hate trying to make up a song. That's like writing and it doesnt' flow as well as when I let the inspiration wake me up in the middle of the night and I just flow with it.
Sharron
