New Diet Foods to Try

Quote  |  Reply
Hi, all-

I'm new to the site, but couldn't resist sharing this great article I read in Allure the other day about new diet foods.  I'm including a list of the ones I've tried and my opinion on them.

1. Tofu Shirataki Noodles- It's the closest thing to pasta without the guilt. They're made of tofu, but shaped like a wide flat noodle and only havge 20 calories a serving!  Ok, so they smell like a goldfish when you open them, but a few rinses with cool water and boil them and they're great! Hold your breath and give them a try with some marinara sauce or your other favorite pasta sauce.

2. Dr. Praeger?s Spinach Pancakes- At only 80 calories per patty, these pancakes are amazing.  Try the broccoli patties too.  I like them heated up with a side salad for a great lunch.

3. Swiss Miss Diet Hot Chocolate- I love these packets that contain only 25 calories per serving. Add it to your coffee to have a low cal mocha

4. Skinny Cow Low Fat Ice Cream Sandwiches- A good sized ice cream sandwich is only 140 calories and oh so yummy!  I've been loving these for awhile now.

5. Fage Total Yogurt- Love love love this stuff.  It's Greek yogurt and has a rich creamy texture.  I add splenda and honey and sliced strawberries and it's SO filling.  My nutritionist recommended the 2% in lieu of the non fat, as its much more satisfying and only a few more calories

6. Laughing Cow Light Gourmet Cheese Wedges- I have portion control issues, so these tiny spreadable wedges at 35 calories a pop are great.  My afternoon snack is 2 wasa crisps with a wedge of laughing cow and a sliced tomato.  Fantastic.

7. Dreyer?s/Edy?s Slow Churned Light Ice Cream- Mmmm... rich and creamy, with half the fat and one third of the calories.

I totally agree with #3, 4, 6, and 7.  Laughing cow is what I use in place of regular cheese and mayo on my sandwich.  Its creamy like mayo yet oh so cheesy!

I am going on the search for the tofu goldfish noodles.  New food is so fun.  Where did you find those shirataki's?

Wow I think 1 & 2 are exactly what I've been looking for - something bulky and filling but low cal and healthy for dinners. Going to start my UK search now!
I've heard so much about Laughing Cow cheese wedges, but how are they nutritionally? Like how much protein and calcium does one wedge have?

I'd just go for fat free single sliced cheese. The kind I buy is only 30 calories, has 30% your DV for calcium, and 4g protein.

muttlover, the laughing cow light wedges are only 2.5 grams of protein and only 6% DV of calcium but taste-wise and portion-wise you get a whole lot more bang for your calorie buck if with the laughing cow as opposed to the fat free slices! I used to use the slices but one slice on a sandwich means you can hardly taste the cheese. With the laughing cow, one wedge is almost TOO MUCH creamy cheese for an entire sandwich, not to mention the taste is absolutely wonderful! Just my opinion though!
I always find my shiritaki noodles at asian markets. Their texture is fairly rubbery... but works well in stir fry and soup.
Mmmm, I love tofu shiritaki noodles...

Hungry girl has a great recipe for low-cal fetuccuni alfredo, check it out!

I found the tofu shirataki noodles at new seasons, a local organic type grocery store.  They were weird and the goldfish smell is really evident.  I drained them and put them in boiling water for just a minute then mixed in a vege type stir fry.  If your really avoiding carbs it may hit the spot.

I picked up the Laughing Cow cheesey.  I got those little discs.  I couldn't spread it at all so I couldn't figure out what all the talk is about.  It's the only laughing cow cheese I could find.  I know you guys talk about the wedges but I haven't seen them yet.  I'm dying to try them!!!

I found a new frozen entree (perfect for lunch).  It was a Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers.  I tried the Whiskey Grilled Steak.  250 calories, 18 grams of protein, 580 grams of sodium.  The nutrition values listed in the library are different than what's on the package.  It varied enough for me to feel I needed to add it for myself.

The spinach pancakes sound very intersting...thanks for that tip!  I will have to keep my eyes open for them...and the brocolli.

Do you have a publix by you?  They keep the wedges (unrefrigerated) on an end cap near the milk or soft drink/chips.  Winn dixie keeps them in the gourmet cheese refrigerator, usually by the lunchmeat.  Sam's club has started carrying the packages in a three-pack too!
