Have New Exercise Goals Each Year

Quote  |  Reply

Just because we are over 50 doesn't mean we stop setting new exercise goals. I want to run faster than I did last year. I can drop some more weight, have better nutrition and train better. I am getting in shape now , so I will be ready when I turn 60 in 8 years. My boys are 3 and 5 and I need to stay in shape to play with them.

Do you have specific exercise goals for this year?

Hi Gerry! I am trying to get my body fat below 25%, currently 29%.  I would like to beat my time for dayhiking Mt Whitney (last year 13.5 hours), but that depends greatly on who I'll be hiking it with.  I would also like to be able to do 25 pushups (currently at 16).

Other than that, I want to climb Mt Russell (in Calif.), at least one other 14er, and climb several other new peaks I've had my eye on including one called Homer's Nose.  I'm hoping if I can drop 10 pounds, I'll have an easier time keeping up with the younger mountaineers I hang with!

You are so right, we can gain a lot of fitness in our 50's, especially if we were not top athletes at a younger age Smile

Alice:

You sound like a great hiker. Growing up in California, I never hiked on Mt. Whitney. I did ride my bike to the Whitney Portal from the valley. My only 14K mountain ascent was riding up Mt. Evans in Colorado. Good luck on reducing your body fat.

Mt Whitney sounds like a great hike.  do you have any preparation suggestions for this hike?

Hi kamyar,

Gerry said he has not hiked Mt. Whitney, but I have.  Here is a link to a web page with a wealth of information about this hike, including pre-hike conditioning.
