i've always used the food log the way it was intended, logging everything i eat after the fact and seeing how many calories i eat.

today i thought of a new way to use it.  i planned out a healthy menu for the day and now i'm trying to stick to it.  so far it's been much easier to make food decisions and so forth because, well, i don't have to make them.  they have already been made in a logical way.

of course this wouldn't work for days when you eat out or are on vacation but for boring tuesdays it seems to work pretty well. 

i just wanted to pass this on and see if anyone else uses it this way!

I am glad you figured that out and that it is working for you.  I plan much of what I eat and bring meals/snacks with me since I am on the go a lot. I try to log the night before or early morning before I leave my house all the things I plan to eat that day.  I make changes to it of course in case I didn't eat something logged or I ate something that I hadn't already included.  It is really helpful though to plan it like this because it lets me know how much calories I have left even before I ate something.

I only logged food for about a month while I was teaching myself portion control but I always logged the day in advance and printed it out.  The I would mark-off the things as I eat them or make note of any changes.  The I would correct the log the next morning so that it was accurate when I was planning the new day.

I have also found that planning my foods ahead on the food log helps out. Then I can play around with food choices to get me to my caloric daily goal.

And trhawley,,,I too am learning portion control...I did not realize just how much 3 oz. of meat protien was,,,I am eating 3 oz. of meat protien and finding it satisfying when paired with lots of "a" rated low calorie low carb veggies.

 

Hmm.. I've never used the food log as a planning tool. That's a great idea! I think I'll try it out. Thanks!!

 

such a good idea i've written out what i plan to eat the next day from time to time, but this is good. im one of those crazy people that if i write it down, ill actually do it pretty much no matter what. i think im going to start that though!
