Reason: Moved to the Lounge forum since it's more appropriate (ongoing support thread). Thank you!
Hi Cheryl and everyone,
The burn meter is what you burn in calories in a day. It changes all day and resets itself at midnight. When you set up your profile, what you do i.e. sedentary to active (move a lot), and your age, height, it will tell you what you burn and then to loose weight you are to have a difference of between 500 & 1000 calories between the two. When you add in exercise it will change the burn meter.
Check what you have for your settings, 2090 sounds high unless you move around alot all day and do a lot of exercise. I am at 1600 calories a day before I do any exercise, it will change at the top when I put in my exercise and the middle is where you are at "at" that moment, Hope this helps.
Phox50 glad you had a good trip and didn't gain anything, aren't grandchildren great.
Have a good night all... Betty
I'm here to complain. Why is losing weight so difficult at my age (47)? I was feeling all proud of myself because I was working at this so hard so I got on the scale. Nothing! The same!
Grrrr!!! Do I have to go on the Bobby Sands diet or what? (For those who don't remember...Bobby Sands went on a hunger strike, in prison , I think.... many years ago. Dead or alive I bet I outweigh him now (he's either dead or 90 years old by now!)
I am thinking of having just a protein shake for supper and going to 1000 cals a day till the end of February.
Seriously, I'm not going to quit or do anything crazy but this is ridiculous!!
Ok, I'm quite a bit calmer today. I just needed to vent yesterday...I was really upset and frustrated. I went back and did some reading and it looks like a pound a week is the average weight loss on a 1300 calorie diet.
I guess I was thinking I must have dropped at least 1-2 lbs for sure yesterday and was upset when it didn't happen.
I'll hang in there. Thanks for listening to me.
Liz, vent away. That's part of it. We all bask in our successes, wallow in our failures and vent our frustrations. The main thing is, we just can't give up.
There is a little country diner across the street from my home. When we got in from work today, my husband and I took the dogs out for a walk and we could smell those wonderful greasy hamburgers on the grill. I could visualize the french fries bobbing up and down in the deep fat fryer. I was practically galloping with the pup, trying to make her hurry up and take care of business so I could get back in the house and shut the door. It's the same smell everyday, but for some reason, this evening.....Oh Brother!
Saturday 2/9/08 WEIGH IN DAY
Previous Weight - 163.40
Current Weight - 160.8
That means I LOST 2.6 lbs this week ![]()
MY TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS = 28.2 lbs!!!!!
That's around 1.75 pounds a week during the entire 16 weeks I've done this!
WOW!!! The 150's are just right there within reach!!! Maybe by next Saturday!! What'll I DO... What'll I wear?! Literally!! My pants are falling off. I know that's the style, but I think it's more for guys and boxer shorts.... or plumbers ![]()
THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - I changed up a few things this week. I listened to my body and gave it a rest physically, so my treadmill exercise (other than normal housework or grocery shopping) was zero each day. I guess I also wanted to "test the waters" so to speak, and my Weight Loss program that I implement is proving itself a winner!! I'm stoked!
Good Morning everyone,
Ro way to go, I am so proud of you. You must feel fantastic!
Liz I agree with Cheryl "Vent away" that is what we are here for. I upped my treadmill I am going on it longer and trying to do another 30 minutes in the afternoon hoping that may make a difference. We will see.
Skinnyoldme, I found some great low cal dressings last week (multiple brands), I have been having a balsamic vinaigrette for three months now only 40 calories (I eat a salad every day also) but needed a change even the creamy ones were 70 calories or so, of course that is for a couple tablespoons!!! so it depends on how much you put on.
Have a great day everyone. Betty
Hi again, I just read this and thought you all might like it. I do feel that one of my problems is portion control it is amazing how small the portions SHOULD BE compared to what they are when we eat "well me anyway"... Since this talks about us "older women" I thought you might like it. Betty
Mini-meals and Metabolism
You may have heard that eating small, more frequent meals will boost your metabolic rate, help you burn more calories, and ultimately lead to weight loss.
But, there's no clear consensus if it's true or not. Planning to eat in a more structured way may prove beneficial, especially if you tend to skip meals and eat irregularly. However, a downside to eating frequently is that you have more chances to overeat. And, after all, the total number of calories you eat in a day is ultimately what matters.
As We AgeCan eating smaller, more frequent meals prevent you from gaining weight as you grow older? Apparently yes if you watch your portion sizes.
A recent study compared the fat-burning capabilities of young women in their 20s to older women in their 70s and 80s. The test subjects were given meals of 250, 500, and 1,000 calories. Both the younger and older groups were able to burn fat efficiently (called fat oxidation) after snacks or meals of 250 or 500 calories.
At 1,000 calories, however, the older women were unable to burn fat as efficiently as the young group. Large meals, then, may be more likely to turn into fat as we age. For this group, smaller meals of approximately 250 to 500 calories per meal will be appropriate.
The Bottom LinePortion size is quite important in weight control. The total calories you take in versus the calories used determines whether you gain, lose, or maintain weight. If you've had an erratic eating pattern in the past, planned meals will probably help you choose wisely during the day and avoid overeating at night. Just remember that at the end of the day, the calories you've taken in overall are what counts.
Good morning all. Ro, congratulations. That is terrific! We started out at similar weights so your are really an inspiration to me.
I didn't loose any weight this week, which did surprise me. I was faithful with my caloric intake but I did cheat two days in regards to exercise. 2 days I did the usual walking on my lunchhour and going up and down stairs several times a day, but nothing extra. Yesterday was a totally different story where calories are concerned. My husband and I had a big day out in the city, ate both lunch and supper in restaurants. Did fair with our lunch, but had a big (and I mean BIG) burger and fries for supper. We both ate only 1/2 of the our fries and I left about 1/4 of my burger. He left about a 1/3 of his. One thing is for sure, this kind of food doesn't taste as good as it used to cos now it is served with a side order of guilt. This morning we are both back on track and feel pretty positive about it.
Here's to a happy and productive week to us all!
Cheryl
Hey, thanks everybody for being so nice about my rant.
And congrats to Ro. Your success is very encouraging!!!
I have to say one thing though- since I started here I have not had any emotional eating binges! That alone is a breakthrough for me.
I am going to try to drop FIVE pounds by the end of month. Thats eighteen days away starting tomorrow. I will weigh and measure everything so I am absolutely sure about portion size. I will workout every night for at least 30 minutes. I am dropping to 1200 calories a day (from 1300) and will try to stay under that.
If we have any mild days, I am going to try and get outside for a run. Running outside is definitely tougher than the treadmill. And somehow it makes me feel better. Of course, we are having wind driven snow here at the moment. Tomorrow is supposed to be ten degrees out. Stupid %*&% winter!
If anyone wants to join me in this quasi challenge I would love to have you along. It's important I push myself alittle and not become complacent. I am hoping for a summer at my ideal weight and would love to make that a reality.
I love the support you guys lend and it makes a big difference- THANK YOU.
Have a great week.
Liz
Good Morning Everyone-and welcome Elizabeth
I hope everyone has a week filled with inspiration and positive influences.
Ro, Congats on your weight loss!! I'm pumped for you!!! By the way how's the weather in Texas this week? We're in the middle of a good ole blizzard today. But that is to be expected for our area. More snow=more ice=Ice Fishing! Yeah!!
Cheryl, don't beat yourself up with guilt-take the postive out of it. You left 1/4 of the burger on your plate-not in your hips. So put it behind you (so to speak). Today is a new day.
Betty, Thanks for the post I too have some problem with portion control.
Have a great Day everyone!!
Good Monday morning, all.
Nanamoss, I like the way you think. The burger did look alot better left on the plate than on my keester. lol
I have a question about portion size. I was getting ready to prepare something for supper the other night and the package said that it was 170 calories per 4 oz serving. I weighted out 4 oz, then cooked it and it was only 3 oz. So, when the package gives you the caloric value per weight, is that precooked or postcooked? You know, since I have been on a diet off and on for the last 38 years, you would think I would know all this stuff, but I don't.
Cheryl
two very interesting articles I found.

Good Morning everyone,
Thanks for the articles Della very in-lightening.
Cheryl I think it is after it is cooked but I do not know for sure.
Liz I wish you luck with your challenge I think it is a do-able one for you.
Well ladies I kept off a pound!!!!!!! To those of you who read my journal I had gained yet another lb... but on Friday I finally dropped some weight (it has been over a month) and I wouldn't believe it when I weighed in, so I was going to see what this week brought after the weekend. So I just weighed myself again (I did yesterday too) and I did keep off a pound, well really two pounds from my weigh in before Friday since I had gained, but 1 pound from where I had been hovering for 6 weeks. I know it isn't a lot but I am happy about it. YEAH...... isn't it funny how such a little thing can make our day.
I will be leaving tomorrow for our mini vacation to the Florida Keys. I have never been there and I am so excited. My hubby works about 70+ hours a week so to have him for 6 days without work is a treat and we have so much fun together. I can't wait to get to some warm weather it was 9 degrees yesterday morning and soooooo windy all day brrrrrr. And the cold front is not here yet!!!!!!!
I will not be logging in any food which will be hard since you do get obsessed with it a bit. Nor will I exercise per say. We walk everywhere so I am thinking I will get a lot of exercise with that. I will be careful with what I eat but I am on vacation, may even have dessert with dinner whoo hooo... Have a good week everyone I will talk to you when I return.
Betty
Cheryl-everthing I've read about portions is you weigh it "Before" it's cooked. Not after. Not sure as to the why's of it-just know that is what the experts tell us.
Betty-hope you have a great time in Florida-enjoy yourself-just remember to post some pics in your gallery for us to droll over. LOL
Don't forget the sunscreen and your sunglasses.
I Worked out with the Walk Away The Pounds (WATP) dvd-3 mile walk - did this Sunday and Monday. Boy, it sure made me work up a sweat. It was easy on the knees-and I worked muscles in my legs I've not worked while attending aerobics or with the Slim In 6 dvd's. I highly recommend the WATP if you have problem knees like me.
Hope everyone has a great day!!!
nanamoss.... Thanks for being pumped for me! LOL!! As for the weather in Texas... it stinks (literally). It's cold one day, warm the next... windy always. My skin is so dry and my eyes burn all the time. Blech!!
liz.... Thanks for the kudos! I'm glad it's an encouragement to you.
Cheryl.... I'm pleasantly surprised at how well I'm doing! We'll keep on trucking on together LOL!!
Betty.... What can I say... you make me feel loved LOL!!!
I'm having a hard time since Saturday and I think I've figured something out. I suddenly realized some things today after watch TBL Couples episode tonight. We all have reasons, whatever they may be, behind our weight gain. Mine is a "Celebration Mentality" that's my downfall.
For as long as I can remember, food has been involved with any major event in my life growing up. If someone had a birthday, there was a gathering with lots of food to CELEBRATE. If someone married, bring on the food at the reception to CELEBRATE. If someone died, we CELEBRATED their life they lived here on earth with, you guessed it.... food! Job promotions. Births. New Homes. A hard day at work where I balanced to the penny as a bank teller, or assisted in my first 2-hour surgery and the patient did great..... CELEBRATE!!!
So, it has only been natural to CELEBRATE my recent weight loss this passed week because I worked hard and stuck to my plan.... but with FOOD???? What was I thinking?? I lost my focus these past few days, and now I need to get my head back in the game. The b12 lipotropics are doing their part of the "house cleaning" my body needs by breaking down the fat. They're incredible! But, I have to do my part with the water intake and not going off on an eating binge... plus I NEED TO do my cardio. It's almost like I'm testing it all. It's almost "exciting" to see what I can get away with... which is dumb. Tomorrow morning is the start of a new day, and a renewed walk in this Healthy Lifestyle Choice of mine.
Lessons.... Lessons.... Lessons............ brother!!! ~Ro~
Having a really hard week for some reason...
At least I'm LOOKING at my treadmill, which is better than yesterday when I totally ignored it ROFLOL!!! Dang! My water intake stinks like roadkill on a hot summer day.... yep... that bad. My calories are really close to being at my max.....
Hard week, y'all.
Ro, don't give up. We all get in slumps from time to time. I did the exact same thing a few weeks back. But, I got back on track and you will too. Sure wish I knew what triggers these slumps, then I could have a fighting chance of heading them off at the pass, but I don't. Do we get tired, overwhelmed, frustrated?
On a happy note (or maybe not so happy, depends on your point of view) my husband took me out for supper tonight to celebrate Valentines Day. I had no idea he was planning this. We ate at a very nice Mexican restaurant. I only had 495 calories alotted for supper and I polished that off with the chips and salsa before the main course ever arrived. Then I proceeded to eat two beef enchiladas, refried beans and rice. I left a little of the rice on my plate and that's all. No telling how many hundreds of calories I went over today. When I got home, I waddled through a 30 minute aerobic dvd to try and offset some of the damage. Oddly, I really don't feel that guilty. Too busy being proud of my husband for remembering Valentines Day after 30+ years of marriage.
Valentines day .....Romance, love, flowers, DINNER, CANDY! I have told my hubby No Candy, we'll see if he listens.
Its our anniversary Sunday...We're going to our favorite Mexican restaurant in Austin. I love the guacamole, chips, salsa, margaritas, oh My Gosh! I can feel my butt growing just thinking about it.
The weather in Texas has been incredible...but, there's a cold front coming through bringing sleet, and rain. I can't wait for consistent warm weather.
