Hi Everyone,
Just checking in. Knee is doing good, was discharged from PT with the full okay to exercise soooooo I am going to get back into a routine since I really fell out of one. Go to the doctor in two weeks and will see how I feel then but hope not to do surgery at least not at this time. I am glad to be able to get back to a reg. routine I am afraid I have gained more weight with the lack of exercise I have not weighted myself (I don't want to know) but the jeans are tight sooo back to working out this week.
My daughter had her first fitting yesterday she looked so beautiful. We got a vail that matched her dress so perfectly. She didn't want one but after trying it on she fell in love with it. less than 3 months to go.
Good for you Cheryl with the gym membership. I do understand how you feel I prefer to work out alone too.
Della we (my husband and two other couples, our dearest friends) are all going to St. John Virgin Island in September for 10 days for my 50th birthday. I have never been on vacation with friends before and I have never been to St. John. I am looking forward to it. We bought our plane tickets this week so it is official. Busy year this year.
Hope you all have a wonderful day. Betty
Good morning,
Betty, so glad to hear that your knee is progressing so well. I hope your improvement continues. A lady I work with and her husband take a vacation every year with other couples and they have a blast. She says that having other couples with you adds variety. I bet you are going to have a great time.
Well, I did join the gym for a year. I was there 6 days last week and 5 this week and absolutely love it. I had thought it would be full of young, hard-body athletes and middle-aged, over weight me, but I was wrong. So far it has been about 50/50. I have also noticed that some of the young people can't keep up with me on the treadmill and elliptical. I will give the credit for that to a year's worth of Leslie workouts. It is a boost to the ego when I can do 30 minutes of intervals on the elliptical and an 18 year old gets on one beside me and only lasts 10 minutes. Grandma is looking pretty good now, if I do say so myself. Well, at least my self confidence has gone up. Just working out along side others instead of alone in my basement, is remarkable for me.
Della & Carla, I am thinking of you and hope you are enjoying life.
Have a great weekend. Cheryl
Hello,
My name is Julie and I live in Scotland.
I am 48, 49 in September. I joined CC 2 years ago and lost 28lbs. It started sneaking on again so I'm back cos it helps you stay a little more in control ![]()
Nice to read everyone's stories. I'm afraid I haven't quite got into the excercise thing yet - work a lot of hours - mostly at night - and cant afford to join a gym (excuses, excuses !)
Have tagged the thread so I can find it again
Am at work just now so I suppose I'd better get off the computer ![]()

Good Morning everyone,
Hello, Julie. Very nice to hear from you. I know what you mean about the weight sneaking back on. I have done the same thing. It does help to keep in touch with others who are going thru the same thing and understand. I am checking in sporadically now, but would love to hear from you anytime.
Nothing new to report as for my progress. I have been to the gym on my lunch hour every work day. I feel good and that is the main thing.
Enjoy the spring. Everything is so beautiful. Cheryl
Good Morning everyone,
Hello Julie welcome. I wanted to check in to say hi and report my progress. My husband and I are leaving today for NYC... we are going to go visit my niece who lives there and go to Cirque to soleil on Saturday. Even though I am NOT a city girl it should be a lot of fun.
Cheryl I am soooooooo PROUD of you for joining the gym that is great! I do understand what you are saying I prefer to work out alone as well. But that is great you are getting past that.
My knee is feeling great, this weekend with all the walking will be a good test. Unfortunately I have gained weight due to lack of exercise, but am feeling good so I am doing more each day that's all I can do.
Well everyone have a wonderful day, we are suppose to have beautiful weather here, I love spring.
Betty
Hello everyone,
I just spent the entire day tidying up my garden - all the heavy back breaking stuff that needs doing after the winter and I still have more to do tomorrow!
Anyway, according to the activity count I burned over 1000 extra calories today (can it really be that much?) so I am having some apple crumble and custard as a treat ![]()
Hopefully it will be another nice day tomorrow - the weather forecast is good - and I will finish the tidying up part and then we might have a barbecue.
I think our top temperature is going to be around 15 C, that's pretty good for April in Aberdeen, probably a bit chilly for a lot of you over in America !!
Feeling satisfied and off to enjoy my dinner ![]()
Hi Everyone! Welcome to the new posters! I seem to have less free time to write! I am really stuck in the "I don't feel like exercising" mode lately :( I have gained a few pounds and I just can't seem to find the motivation. Time to take a good look in the mirror and let me scare myself to death!!
But, I have been looking forward to walking - the weather is supposed to be in the 70's this weekend. Time for a trot around the block - on foot, not on my horse!
And the yard work will count for something. It's just the eating that needs to really go away!
Glad to hear gardens and knees are all doing well. Keep up the good work!
Carla
Good Morning everyone,
Glad to hear all are doing well. It is suppose to be in the 70's and 80's this weekend I can not wait, it has rained all week so nice weather will be great. We are going to redo the waterfall in our fish pond it has a leak and we just need to put new plastic underneath but keep putting it off so that is the plan this weekend.
My knee is good, NYC was great beautiful weather while we were there. Did a lot of walking I iced my knee every night so it held out very well didn't really hurt just sore but that is to be expected if you walk alot. Went to the doctor on Monday and for now going to hold off on the surgery. I can of course change that at any time but with my daughters wedding and summer and etc etc etc... I am going to try to wait till the fall if at all.
Weight is still the same I hear you Carla I have not gotten back into the exercise routine either and I NEED to. I know that gardening will help but I am limited to what I can do. I have just been spending so much time doing things around the house so it is in good shape for my daughters shower (it is going to be here) that I do not leave time for anything else. But painting and joint compounding well it is exercise in it's own way I figure.
Have a wonderful day everyone. Enjoy the beautiful weekend, hope it is nice for everyone. Betty
Hello Ladies,
Isn't it great to be able to enjoy the outdoors again! I don't garden, but I do enjoy walking my dogs and not freezing to death.
Julie, I did a conversion on your temperature and discovered that 15C = 59F. We are having an unusually warm spring here in Kentucky. Today's temperature was around 83F (28C). Even when it gets up in the 90s, I don't complain about the heat. Now the cold.....that's a different story. I whine all winter long.
Della has been much on my mind lately. I have started having the wild weight fluctuations that she talked about. Menopause didn't come knocking at my door. It hit the door with a battering ram and broke it down. I may weigh 169 one week and 175 the next, then back down. Whew. Good thing that I conquered my aversion to the gym and have been working out harder than I ever have in my life. Otherwise, I would probably look like Jabba the Hutt on a bad hair day. Oh, and I am having a few little tropical moments too, just to make things even more interesting. All since February. Honestly, I'm laughing, not complaining. It's just part of life and I'm glad to be here to experience it.
Have a great week, everyone. Cheryl
Hello everyone,
Thanks for the conversion Cheryl, I thought Julie was a bit cooler than us but not that much. We have had very warm weather here in Connecticut as well, in the 80's too. Today and tomorrow will be the same then back to norm in the 60s. We actually had windows open last night!
I have already got all my window boxes done and most of my plants on my deck. I have NEVER had them done this early. I will have to cover them when we get low enough to have a frost but that's okay. With my daughters shower here in less than a month it is nice to be done with them. I really just have mulch to do and a couple more pots of flowers. Usually I am not done till the end of May.
I am doing okay weight still up and down, but with gardening here I hope to be more down. Knee is good as long as I am careful with it. I tweeked my back yesterday moving something getting older really sucks sometimes but it is okay today so It will be back to normal in a couple days. Plan to do some light cleanup in the yard branches that have falling so nothing that is too hard.
Cheryl I hear you with the "TROPICAL" moments I now have them in the middle of the night, it has now affected my sleep some nights.
Have a good week everyone. Betty
Hello everyone! How are you all doing?
Julie: Welcome to the group and I would love having +15c right about now. We're having a very slow start to spring with temps hovering in the -11 at night to a +7 in the am.
Although, I must state my tulips, crocus and daffodils are already pushing their way towards the sun.
Cheryl and Betty: Tropical moments, ah how sweet the sound. .how horrible to deal with. I have them all day and all night-nights are worse than the days. LOL And like you Cheryl I have to laugh about it-if I didn't I'd go ballistic. LOL
Cheryl: I'm so proud of you joining the gym! You rock! I would love to have a gym around here. . but oh well the great outdoors and my gardens must suffice.
Betty: so good to hear the "good" news about your knee. How's your gardens doing?
Carla: You know the old saying about falling off a horse. . right. . LOL
A group of ladies here started a "Biggest Loser" challenge last month. I procrastinated about joining due to my huge weight fluctuations. But finally last week decided what the heck and went anyway. I thought well if nothing else it'll give me a challenge. And I do love competition. And it sure can't hurt.
We have been busy cleaning around here in the hopes spring will rear it's lovely head.
My son is going to Ottawa on a school field trip this week and next. They are participating in a SEVEC outing. He is going to Toronto, Montreal (staying overnight), shopping, museums, tulip festival. Wow, sure wish I could fit in his suitcase.
AND May 5th my darling little grand daughter Airyanna will be brought into the world via C-Section. I'll post a picture of her when her mommy and daddy send me one.
Take care everyone!
Hi there people,
It's so nice to read everyone's comments and just general chit chat as well as all the weight loss stuff.
Weather here is still much the same and forecast is for cloud and rain - I just looked Aberdeen up on Wickipedia and according to them the average annual temperature here is a measly 8C or 46F !! I'm sure it's not that bad. Mind you I dont think I could cope with extremes so 28C from Cheryl and -11 from Della would be too much for me !
Della - I am at work right now and I work as an obstetric theatre nurse so am involved in all the C-Sections, elective and emergency. It'll be nice to see pictures of your new grand-daughter. As you may have guessed we are not overly busy at the moment (it is 00.05 on 28/04) which is how come I am sitting tapping away at the computer.
I have three 'grown up' (loosely applied) sons and although 2 of them have girlfriends none have produced offspring as yet - probably not a bad thing really ![]()
I finish this run of night shifts on Wed. morning and hoping to get back to the garden again.
I dont think I've hit menopause yet - I'm sure I would know, wouldn't I ? Only thing I notice is mood swings, but they're not really anything new !!
Nice to talk girls
xx
Hi Julie:
Good to hear from you. I have three children as well. Oldest girl 23 years old, married lives in the States and has a one year old son and a daughter on the way. My only son is 17 - 18 in January youngest child is a girl and she's 15 - 16 this August. I'm in Newfoundland, Canada. The Great Northern Peninsula to be exact. That's the reason for the weather temps. Right now we're getting snow! By tomorrow we're suppose to have a total of 25 Cm's of it.
Girls: I am enacting a "New" Game Plan. I've been reading on-line (of course) about hormones, weight gain, menopause etc. . anyway, on the Mayo Clinic Website I found alot of information about women who are unable to lose weight even with a low caloric intake and work out regime (If I can find the article I'll post it). Of course it stated we as menopausal women should be concentrating on building muscles and not just aerobic exercise. But it also went on to state we should be counting our carbs instead of calories. So to make a long story short (or shorter LOL) after looking at my caloric and carb intake for the past month I have been consistently at my target range for calories but my carb intake has been quite high. So game plan for me now is to significantly lower my carb intake and see if things will literally start moving. I'll keep you posted on that.
Chat with everyone later.
Della
A quick hello to everyone, Della that sounds good, PLEASE keep us updated as it seems to not matter what I do or don't eat the weight just stays there. I know I need to do more weights to build muscles too. Got to go Betty
Hi everyone,
Just to update you to my "new" game plan. Tuesday I started counting my carbs and generally following the southbeach diet plan. I must say I have enjoyed it thus far. And the induction phase isn't proving as hard as I thought it might. To date I've lost 2 pounds (in only 3 days) so for that I'm pleased. I still feel it's too early to get overly excited after I dip below 200 and STAY going below then I'll feel like I've found something that works for me. I got alot of the information from Jayne's South Beach Diet Forum here on CC, plus from the South Beach website.
I have energy and the meals are easy to plan. I haven't had any carb cravings (as of yet).
Going to Corner Brook for the weekend so I wont be touching base with anyone until next week. But I will keep you updated on my progess.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. And keep posting ladies-even if it's just to say hi.
Take Care everyone!
Della
Hi Ladies,
Just a real quick note -I have a new grand daughter! Her name is Airyanna and she was born Saturday. 7 pounds 8 ounces! She is absolutely gorgeous. Of course. My daughter seems to have contracted a virus. It's called Methicillin. Julie do you have much information on this? And he also told her the uterus was so thin she should not have any more children.? I've never heard of this-and it worries me as well. I'm searching on the web and attempting to learn what I can. Any assistance you can give would be deeply appreciated.
Also-weight loss since counting carbs instead of calories: 6.3 pounds. This is since Tuesday, April 28th. Not too shabby.
Anyway, got to go.
Della
Hi all,
I have had a lot of catching up to do, reading everyone's posts. Sounds as though none of us are suffering from boredom. This is good...idle hands equal big appetites, or at least a lot of mindless eating.
Della, so very good to hear from you. Congratulations on the new granddaughter! There is nothing like grandchildren. I had a friend a few years ago (she moved away and we lost touch) who was told after the birth of her daughter that she had a thin uterus. Dr. told her she might be able to have one more child but definitely no more than that. I hadn't heard of it before or since, until your daughter. Also, I am thoroughly intrigued with your new eating plan. I switched to high glycemic carbs about a year ago, but it never occurred to me to track them. How many grams of carbs do you allow yourself a day?
I celebrated my 51st birthday Saturday. My daughter, son-in-law and grandson came in Saturday morning and stayed until Sunday afternoon. We all had lunch at Mom's Sunday after church. By "all" I mean the above mentioned plus both sons and their wives. It was very nice. My husband couldn't make it and one daughter-in-law had to leave early, but still, it was a terrific day.
I have been to the gym faithfully five days a week. I do weights two days and cardio the other three. Lost 2 lbs this week, but not getting excited about it. If I hold true to form, I may gain 3 lbs next week. Despite all this, I'm not seeing any changes in the way my clothes fit.
Have a good week everyone. Cheryl
Hi Cheryl,
Happy Birthday!! I'll be 48 in August. Another step close to 50. Looking forward to it too!
To answer your question I've been keeping my carb count below 50 every day. I attempt to keep it close to 32 and I'm eating quite well. I'm not hungry and feel satisfied after each meal. I'm not getting hungry between meals or late evenings. I've been reading a lot about the South Beach Diet (there is a forum on this here on CC) and have adopted a lot of the suggestions from there. I'm not as strict on the induction phase as it states but I'm still losing. So I must say as of today I'm quite pleased with this.
I'm still eating lots of veggies and protein. Taking vitamin supplements and drinking lots of water. I thought I'd miss the bread but so far I've only had a few twinges. When we dined out this weekend and the waitress brought us a hot roll with butter...Ohh that was hard. But not as hard as I thought it would be. I just laid it aside and never looked at it again.
All I can say is I'm seeing my weight going down every day and I feel like I'm still eating a very healthy diet.
Anyway must go. Will check in again later on.
Della
Hi Della,
Good news about your new grandaughter.
How many children does your daughter have and how many c-sections has she had ? There is a problem with 'thinning' of the uterus following c-section because where the incision is made will be weaker than before and if someone has a number of c-sections this can increase the risk of what's called 'scar rupture' (the uterine scar, not the one on the tummy).
Methicillin is not the name of a virus - it's the name of an anti-biotic. There is a world wide problem with a bug called Methicillin Resistant Staphlococcus Aureus (MRSA) which can cause problems following surgery, in the elderly, the young and those more susceptible to infection. If your daughter has contracted MRSA it will need to be treated with different anti-biotics but dont worry too much. As she is young, fit and healthy it shouldn't cause too many problems. A huge majority of the population carry staphlococcus aureus but it doesn't cause problems unless you are compromised in some way. Good hygiene practices (at home and in the hospital) are really important to limit the spread, especially with a very new baby.
Obviously, I am not a doctor! so she should ask nursing and medical staff more questions regarding both issues. Tell her not to be fobbed off and ask for things to be explained without any confusing
medical terminology.
Hope this has been helpful, if there's anything else just give me a shout.
By the way I looked up where you live on Google Maps - it looks very cold !! Also, this 'South Beach' thing seems to be working pretty well, I had a look at my average carb intake over the last wee while and it's usually over 100. I dont have an awful lot to shift but have stuck with the last 7lbs so maybe reducing carbs might be good.
Hi to all the rest of you guys, hope everyone is doing well and having fun![]()
Take care,
Julie
Hi Ladies:
Julie: Thank you so much for the information. My daughter is now home with the baby and of course in a bit of pain from the c-section. Her husband has taken the week off to help her-but next week she'll be on her own. Poor thing. This distance between us is so very hard! And to answer your question she has had 2 c-sections. Her son was born in 2007 and now Airyanna in 2009. We know she did not have enough time between pregnancies. But this one was a complete surprise.
Well ladies to date I've lost 7.6 pounds. That is in 8 days. I ordered the SB books and 2 cook books and will start incorporating their plans in my daily life. Also I continue to work out with Leslie and walking outside on good days. This weekend is designated "WORK OUTSIDE DAY"!! Gardens need attention, Lawn needs raked and flowers planting.
Chat with you all later.
