new here and never want to eat
Hi I just joined. I never have any kind of appetite. I will get dizzy and sick and then i know i should eat something but i never feel hungry. And even then when i think about what i should eat nothing sounds good nothing really ever tastes good either. I did gain a few lbs last month by drinking carnation instant breakfast and I bought this weight gainer 900 calorie shake from this health fitness store but I get sick of drinking the same thing every day day after day and I am now forcing myself to drink that as well and have slacked off of drinking it. What has worked for everyone here? Any advice would be great!
Your first top should be your doctor. If your appetite is so badly damaged you may need medical intervention in the first instance to get you beyond the first hurdle. You should also ask for physical checks since you're almost certainly malnourished.
If you don't recognise hunger signals naturally or if you've suppressed your appetite by chronically undereating you have to override them manually That means eating regularly - by the clock, if necessary. Some people refer to it as 'mechanical eating' but that sounds rather grim and robotic. 'Regular meals' is a much more pleasant/natural idea.
Start with breakfast and work out from there in a series of planned meals and snacks. The idea is not to wait until you're sick and dizzy before you eat but to have a meal or snack already lined up. If you need to gain weight you've got to be aiming for 2500 cals a day minimum. So that could be
- Breakfast... 400 cals
- Snack... 300 cals
- Lunch... 600 cals
- Snack... 300 cals
- Supper.... 700 cals
- Snack... 200 cals
If you're not used to eating much it's going to be a conscious effort at first. To avoid feeling 'stuffed' you'll have to make intelligent food choices... more high-cal, high-nutrition, low-bulk foods, fewer low-cal high-bulk foods. There is a good list of ideal foods at the top of the Weight Gain board. You can drink some of your calories... glasses of full-fat milk and fruit juice are an easy way to add extra cals to a meal or a snack. Have you got a friend or relative to help you work out a menu or encourage/remind you to eat regularly?
As you start eating regularly you should find that your appetite gradually returns and that your body learns to expect food at certain times. Then it'll be less of a conscious effort and you should find it a lot easier.
although you don't have much on your profile at the moment, I did notice that you are joined to the groups "Depression" and "Quitting Smoking"
psychological aspects can play a major role in the way you 'feel' and interpret things. Many people with depression report a loss of appetite or weight loss. Generally they don't feel what their body is trying to tell them because they are overwhelmed by other thoughts/feelings...
I'm just throwing this out there, I don't really know you so I am just assuming that you suffer from some type of depression, correct me if I'm wrong.. but if so, talking to your doctor and getting some medication would probably be a good start. Along with describing your lack of appetite to him/her as well.
Smokers also have a tendency to use cigarettes to control cravings, and/or replace food (conciously or unconciously)... the satisfying-feelings you get from smoking distracts/overwhelms hunger. The hand to mouth sensation is an anxiety releiver, so when people stop smoking they commonly gain weight, because when that stimulation is not there, they turn to food for similar effects
GI-jane gave some good advice, so I'm not going to build on it... but if you do have such psychological/physical/emotional problems getting those regulated first is probably going to benefit you the most in the long run, regarding general overall health
