New Old guy getting act together

Quote  |  Reply
After getting emails for the past year, I decided to finally look the site over and use the tools. So here we go.

I am 52 years old and am pretty active, running 12 miles a week and hitting the gym a couple of times, but not much weight loss. I have done some olympic distance triathlons and done reasonably well, but I hate to race in the "clydesdale class" (over 200 lbs). I intend to race the "spudman" (an Idaho fun tri) this summer, and want to race my age, not weight class. It's pretty much that I need to keep my face out of the "feed trough" and quit eating so much. I am kind of a stress eater, so it's difficult for me to not forage during the day when I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by events at work, at home, etc.

I guess that I would like to find a buddy that can help me get accountable for eating and exercising and help me get down below 200. I have 16 lbs to go on my 5'9" frame that is already large, so I could use some help.

Thanks, and happy new life!

Dear " Spudman" :

I am encouraged to see another triathlete male who is using this forum !  I AM a Clydesdale, and proud of it ! Seriously, I currently weigh in at 277 and need to burn some fat and gain lean muscle before our first race in the Spring. My wife and I live in FL, and complete several sprint Tris last year, along with a number of 5k and 10 k races.  I enjoy weight lifting as well, but share your weakness for the " feedtrough" . I am a 46 yr old male business professional looking to gather a " band of brothers" that would like to set some goals and encourage one another along the journey.

So if my math is correct, then you are currently 216 LBs and want to break the 200 mark ? What is your ultimate weight goal ? What measures have you taken to deal with your stress eating ? I contend with that too. One of the things I am trying NOT to do is eat while standing up ( I guess cows graze in the field and so do I in the kitchen...)  Several days ago, I also started writing down everything that I eat so I can track my calories and activities.

This weekend, my wife and I cycled 9 + miles yesterday, and ran 3 miles this morning. I am planning a weight workout in the morning. My goal is to weight train 3x per week, and perform a min. of 3 areobic sessions per week . How about you ?

Drop me a line sometime. I sent out a request for my own forum for men last evening , under " Clydesdale" .

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

Nhayes
Nhayes, Thanks for your reply. I can't believe that it's been almost 2 weeks since I have been on this site.

I have been working out great for the last couple of weeks, and feeling stronger, so I'm hoping that i'm trading off "fat" weight for "muscle" weight. I weighed in yesterday (mon 14th) at 213, so things might be working. My goal of course is to race my age (52), but ultimately, I would feel great and feel better at about 185. All this nonsense about BMI saying I should be at 155 is bogus. I would look dead.

My workouts are much like what you said. I'm doing weights 3 days/week for aobut 20-30 min along with some cardio, and then run bike and swim in rotation on the other days. I take sundays off totally. I got sick over the weekend with a stomach bug, but will be at it again tonight for an hour. (I'll ride the stationary bike for 35 min and then weights for 25)

I have been analyzing my "need" to eat under stress and realize that it is as much an escape as anything, so when I feel stressed, I need to find other substitutes for eating, such as talking a short walk around the plant or visit with someone about projects that need to get done. That has helped some this past week, but I found myself at a candy machine and before I knew it, I was pulling out a package of cookies and eating them. So the new plan is that I won't go to the cafeteria where the candy machines are during non-lunch hours. It's amazing what a habit it can become to go to the machines about 2:30 or 3:00 every afternoon. This is something that I really need to be aware of and think about.

I like your idea of a band of brothers to help each other out. I appreciate your reply. By the way, the race I'm in can be seen at www.burleylions.org/spudman
