Hello,

For the last couple of months I've been reading different posts, success stories, frustrations, etc and have quickly learned that I am not alone in my battles.

I have two such 'battles'.

One, i have a problem with bingeing. I don't know what or how it happens. Every couple of days, though, it is like something comes over me. I loose control and find myself doing anything and everyhting just to eat. And, I eat so fast i don't even taste anything...just feel terrible about myself when its all over and done with.

The second battle i have is with sweets. I constantly crave sugar. Many times i hear people say something is 'too rich' or 'too sweet' but those terms just don't exist in my vocabulary. Particularly chocoalate and ice cream...

I'm posting because i think it's time for change. And, at this moment I am doing all that I can to distract myself from the candy dish sitting so beautifully on my co-worker's desk... I am doing this for myself, because I've been in denile for too long. I don't have much weight to loose- five pounds at the most- and i enjoy excersize so that isn't an issue, I just want to create a healthier relationship with food.

Any tips or suggestions from those of you who have had success in overcoming your own battles?

Welcome to Calorie-Count.

Here is a great thread for support on Binging.

Hi there! I also struggle with BED (binge eating disorder) and chocolate is my weakness. If you would like, create a profile and add me as a friend. I have had success controlling binges and I'll help you out as much as I can.:)
thank you. So much.

I'm so excited. I've set a very little (but very challenging) goal for today: I'm not going to eat even one piece of candy from the dish.

I can do it...I know i can.
You can do it!:) Making small, obtainable goals is a great way to start. Baby steps. Just take it one day, one hour, one meal at a time.:)
When I started my diet I thought I was going to die (or atleast fail dieting) b/c i craved junk food all the time and I used to eat it all thetime. But like any addiction you have to go through a withdrawl period. Now I dont crave the junk anymore b/c my body has gotten use to the new snacks I eat.
Phew. Made it through yesterday without a trip to the candy jar...

I'm gonna try to do it again today. Correction: I AM gonna do it again today.

Christinak74: I repeated your advice over and over to myself yesterday. Thanks so much.

...one hour at a time.
hey! way to go! that's awesome! treats at the office are SOOO hard to avoid sometimes
Ohhhh.... the candy dish.... I know it well.  The only tooth in my mouth that used to matter to me was that gigantic sweet tooth.

I could never eat just one and I seldom stopped at just one chocolate bar.

What works for me is breakfast, lunch, dinner.  I make sure I force myself to sit down and eat each and every meal and I make sure that the meal contains appropriate fibre, proteins, carbs.

For me, meal skipping is a recipe for disaster.  When the body gets hungry do you hear that little voice inside you demanding that you obtain sugar sugar SUGAR?  That's your body telling you, in no uncertain terms, that the tank has to be filled - QUICKLY.

I have had to avoid the treats as well - I can't just ban them from the house - I have two rail-thin teenage boys who need every carb and calorie they can get (don't worry - I feed them the good stuff too!).  I also have to avoid the treats at the office - I used to be the one with the constantly refilled candy dish but there are others still there.  Once you start filling your body with good foods at appropriate intervals you will find the overpowering urges tend to subside and, eventually, disappear.  Patience and perseverence and commitment - keep your eye on the goal and the rest will take care of itself.

Good for you for persevering yesterday and I know you will succeed today!
Patients, perseverence, commitment. okay.

I keep checking back every time i feel the urge to get a pice a candy. This place is great!
(((HUGS))) AWESOME! You'll make it today too:) Baby steps sweetie, baby steps:)
Hi Lookingforachange,

I have the exact problem.  Only 5 lbs to loose and I love to exercise.  The exercise is the only thing that balances out my binges.  I binge about every 3 to 4 days.  I also have a huge sweet tooth.  I can mindlessly eat a tub of ice cream.

I have learned what my binge trigger is...loneliness.  I try to limit my time alone.  That leads to binges.

I've found the journal portion of cc helpful.  None of my friends or family know about my secret, so writing it down in the journal helps.   I also added you to my friend list.
i guess you've realized how good it is to know i'm not alone...

hard to admit this...but maybe you or someone on here has gone through the same thing. I've been finding myself taking the 'long way' home just so i can eat in privacy. Then i stuff all the wrappers and garbage from whatever i just ate into the dumpster ouside my building. My roomates have no idea. I dont think anyone does.

which is why i'm on here. i can do this. 12:30, still no trips today to the candy jar.

phew. Thanks for all the support. Quick question; what does it mean to be added as a friend? thank you, by the way- i just haven't figured that part out yet...
You can add people to your friends list by clicking on their profile, and clinking the add to friends link. I also added you.:)
I was just readin threw this and I am having the same problem and I as well do it in secret.  I live with my mom and her husband and I eat well and then I binge when they go to bed, I eat and eat and eat and I hate the way that it makes me feel and then I throw out the trash after the leave the next morning, so they don't see it.  I am trying hard to stop this because I know it is wrong. This is so hard for me and I hate that.
Yup.  We've all done it.  Hide the wrappers. Sneak the treats.  They won't notice. Yup we get away with it until we're 214 pounds and, well, it just can't be hidden anymore.

You have taken a huge step in your weight loss program as far as I am concerned.  You KNOW that you have to be honest with yourself. We are here to help each other overcome our individual hidden secrets.  My immediate family knows about what I am doing but I have not told any of my friends.

I hope you don't mind but I have added you to my friend list.   I like honest people who don't try to fool themselves and, although my weight loss has been proceeding fairly steadily so far, I know that down the road I'll probably stumble or plateau or just plain screw up and I hope you, among others here at cc, will be ready, willing and able to give me the direction, support and kick in the butt I may need.  And, of course, I'll be rooting for you!
i could never have imagined this outpouring of support. And from folks who understand.

and, thanks for being my friend too! :)
I agree with most everyone else....baby steps is the way to go!  I'm just starting my weight loss goals too, and one of my biggest issues is my sweet tooth.  I constantly crave chocolate especially.  I try to be good by not buying any, and I live by myself, so you'd figure that not having any in the house would mean you wouldn't eat any.  But I constantly have to convince myself that I don't need to run down to the gas station and buy some chocolate.  It really can be a daily struggle, but as long as you can stay strong for that day you're on your way!

I think you're doing a GREAT job so far, and everyone on here is super supportive!  I know you can keep it up! :)
I have a really sweet tooth as well, I hardly ever eat savoury junk but sweet stuff, I eat it all! My advice is cut it down steadily, so say for example if you go out for a coffee, if you normally have say a latte and a chocolate muffin, one week cut out the chocolate muffin and then replace it with a blueberry muffin (I know its not that much healthier but it does have less sugar in), then next week try having just half of the muffin and save the other half till later. If you do it that way you dont notice it some much, where as if you cut it all out after a day or two I'm dying for sugar then binge. Dried Cranberries and rasins are also good to beat sugar cravings.
This is a fairly common thread.  There's good news and bad news.

The bad news:  Initially you have to give up the sweets.  All the sweets.

The good news:  The cravings usually go away after a couple of weeks.  Mine did, and now I even if I have a chocolate, I don't have the whole bag.

My advice:  If you gotta buy them, have somebody else hide 'em.  I still buy cookies for my kids,  I put the (closed) bag on their bedroom door and then have them "hide" them from me.  Sounds like lack of willpower on my part, but there is nothing.. NOTHING more tempting than an already open bag of cookies in the cupboard.  After all, who'll know if just one's missing.  Also, give up pop and diet pop for those first few weeks.  I believe they make your body continue to crave.  My last advice.  Buy some protien bars (i.e. South Beach Cinnamon Raison) and if you can't hold out any longer, have one of them.  It'll take care of you until the next day when you get that new batch of willpower!  Do this and you will stop craving!

Good luck!
