Is my new routine healthy?
Hello Everyone! Im new, my name is Jen and im a 22 year old, married, stay at home mom of one.
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me whether or not my new routine is a healthy one?
After having my daughter I was 228 lbs, I'm now 202 lbs, and i've just started eating between 1100 and 1300 calories per day.
Physical Activity=not much. Daily tasks (childcare, housecleaning) + at least a 15 minute walk, + 1 hour of wii fitness burning at least 200 calories.
An adult woman should not be eating less than 1200, and for your size, probably more. Have you used the tools on CC to get a calorie intake? Remember that caring for your little one makes you at least lightly active, if not more.
Welcome! Congrats on your loss so far! If you go to Tools, you can find out how much you should be eating. You'll need to input your stats in. 1100 is too low (1200 is the minimum recommended for women) and 1300 is still a bit low especially if you are nursing and based on your activity level. You aren't sedentary probably more likely at least light activity (some may suggest moderate).
The goal is to have a daily deficit of 500-1000 calories a day for a healthy loss of .5 to 2 pounds a week. There are lots of great people on here with excellent advice. Browse around the different sections and forums.
Good luck!
actually i hadn't checked that out, thanks!
thank you very much! ill definitely look into it more, and add more calories to my diet. :)
Isn't that welcome news? You're not eating enough - LOL! Never thought I'd hear it after years of being told 1200 or less to lose. But its so true and the reason why all those other "diets" failed. This is a lifestyle change - the changes you make today you have to continue with for the rest of your life (although once on maintenance you'll get more calories). So don't restrict yourself but use moderation and track everything you eat - I've been doing it since Apr 28 and am down 38 pounds so far (I lost alot the first few weeks due to water retention from a too high sodium diet).
As we get closer to goal weight it comes off slower. The best weight loss is .5 to no more the 2 lbs a week. When the weight is lost slow it is much more likely that we will be able to keep it off. If we go below 1200 calories a day the body thinks it is being starved and will burn calories slower and start to burn muscle rather then fat and muscle is what burns fat. So if we are not losing weight(.5-2 LBS. per week) at 1200 calories a day, then we need to exercise more so we are building more muscle thus we are burning more and losing weight will be the results. Walking is really good exercise and the child can go with in a stroller. pushing a baby stroller will really burn and build. ![]()
Oh my goodness! I feel behind the ball! I am 22 years old and still in college - not dating anyone and not even thinking about marriage or kids! It funny to see how people the same age can be in completely different parts of their lives!
As for your new routine: What are you eating? Tons of people say a calorie is a calorie no matter where it comes from but I beg to differ - if you're eating high quality foods like vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and some fiber rich whole grains I would say this is a good plan but if you're eating donuts and ho-hos, then no: not so good! ha ha! As for your activity: as soon as you feel up to it, increase your walking by 15 minutes and then when 30 minutes is too easy up it to 45, etc... and keep your Wii fit in there too because every little bit counts - even if you decide to do some bicep curls with soup cans while waiting for dinner to cook! ha ah!
My only suggestion being that I started around 210 pounds myself, is that you are eating way too little and you have left yourself with no room to decrease your calorie intake as you lose weight. I started at 210 on 1800 calories per day and it worked well for me as, as my weight decreased I decreased my allowable calories.
The other risk with limiting your calories too much at the start is that you might get frustrated and hungry and end up bingeing and do more damage than good.
The minimum a woman should eat is 1200 so I would suggest increasing your calories to a more realistic figure and then if you find it easy and the weight is dropping then reduce it slowly. Remember if you have gone from 2500 or more calories per day and suddenly dropped to 1100-1300 your body might think you are starving and store all fat and you won't lose any weight.
I'm 5'2" and 210 right now and I'm eating 1650/day. Definitely check out the tools section here!

Figure out what type of eater you are and you might just find the answer to permanent weight loss.
