I have just started running i.e jogging and walking.  I'm planning to run a 5K in September--my first race.  I don't care to compete with anyone else; I just want to prove I can do it to myself.  I've logged 24.2 miles for the year.  Woohoo!!
wow thats great!  I did my first full mile run, nonstop on Sunday and did a second one yesterday!  I havent timed them, Im just focusing on actually running!  Im planning on doing a Marathon with Neeners but just run 9 miles of it.
Great job, both of you... I am a runner, and I love to encourage others once they discover that they might be too! Definitely keep your focus on distance, not time, it is better to run far than to run fast, at least in the beginning! Keep on truckin' girls (and boys, too, if you care to join!), you'll love the feeling of "fit" running gives you!
See I always here of how running is hard on the body but then you hear how good it is for you.  Meljo and anyone else.....what kind of info can you give us?
You guys can all start a thread on the community at www.coolrunning.com.  Check it out!  You can get lots of advice on running, etc.
I started loggin on their yesterday!  you motivated me to do that neeners!
Oh boy...I've created a monster!
yep!  LOL!  I only have one worry and so far we are good.  during my period my legs are very painful, my veins drive me crazy to the point of laying down for a day or 2 so I hoping the running will be nice to them.
Hi there.  I am interested it running and have been walking/ running/ jogging on my home treadmill for about 4 months now.  I only take the odd day off here and there.  (mostly when my day gets away for me and there is no time left).  I was wondering... I can only seem to push myself to do about 1.5 minutes of running (2 max) with walking breaks inbetween.  Is it easier or harder outside?  I have never been a runner and really never much considered it, untill recently.  I've read that you should not focus on time, but rather distance.  But... my distance meter on my treadmill does not read correctly.  So I guess my question is...  2 minutes is that good???  How long (aprox) does it take to run a mile??? For a total beginer???  I am in no way looking for praise. Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks...Jen
I think its different outside! give it a try!  I havent timed myself but Neeners did say once it can be 13-15 mins for beginners.
Actually...if you're only able to run 1.5 minutes, you could be running too fast.  Don't sprint....just jog.  You need to build endurance.  Beginners can run around 12-13 minutes a mile.  Slappy is probably running 11-minute miles.  But, that's not the point for a beginner runner.  Just run...forget the clock.  If you run super slow, you'd be surprised how far you can go.
I ran a mile this morning and walked 2.5...it took me about 45 min...I think my mile is taking about 15 min...especially since it was against the wind!  great idea slappy!  My first goal is 5K...but I would like to eventually do a 10 K...no I am not a runner...I'm barely moving but I'm doing it!!!!

Shana
same here Shana, barely moving!
Thanks....  I use a pre set program and usually just try to squeeze some jogging/ running in the middle of the program.  (at the fastest 4mph section).  Probably not the right way to do this.  I am gonna rethink this.  I think I am obsessed with the calorie counter more than anything.  I'm going to try just running and see how I do.  Maybe I'll put a towel over the meters.  Thanks a bunch.

Jen
I do that on mine sometimes too!  try to go outside and run if you are able to....totally different feel
Oh!  This is exciting!  I'm in!!  I can't run at all now, but today I'm taking Neeners advice and jogging slowly for as long as I can.  Let's see how it goes.  I gotta find a running trail.  I'm feeling motivated, can't wait to get home and get my sneakers on!!

I love running.  When I started I couldn't run to the corner, but I had commited to being part of a relay team and needed to run 2 K's.  That commitment kept me motivated and after that first race I was hooked.  That was over 10 yrs ago and I'm still running but looking for 10K races to keep motivated!!  For Canadians looking for a race to train for runningroom.com has listings for every city.  Get a couple of people to commit so you have to stick to it.  Good luck, you'll love it.
Hey  ladies  and gents!

That's fantastic that you are all interested in running.  I myself am a running nut.  Once you dovote some time into it you will find it impossible to live with out...well at least that's how I feel.  I started about 7 years ago, in my earlier twenties and I hated running.  I  wanted to challege myself, see if I could get good at something I wasn't any good at. So that's what I did, I started running 10 minutes a few days a week...at first it almost killed me after 5 minutes, I wanted to die, but I stuck to it.  Running also helped me quit smoking I knew if I wanted to improve I knew I had to quit (smoking and running don't go hand in hand).  Now I am running almost every other day between 8-12km's!   So keep at it everyone! And remember if I can do it, anyone can...trust me!
can i join? i guess i fall under 'veteran'. i've been running since high school. i love the results i see and feel from running, and i've found that i'm a lot more motivated and focused if i have a goal. the first goal of the year is this weekend, a 12k, and at the end of the summer i want to run the local 1/2 marathon. my ultimate goal is to finish a marthon before i turn 30. and in a sick way, i think it would be kick ass to compete in an iron man. but i don't know that i'll ever get to that point. i like to ride bikes, but i don't know how i feel about 112 miles of bike riding. so anyway, count me in!
