How do I get new songs on my Ipod without losing my old ones?
I useiTunes. Well I used to.
I downloaded songs from iTunes and Limewire (mostly Limewire), and of course they were all in my iTunes. Everytime I plugged my iPod in, it would sync with iTunes and any new songs I had downloaded would show in my IPod.
So my computer had to be reformatted. Lost iTunes. :( Now I'm afraid to re-download iTunes because it will be empty, of course, and if it syncs up to my iPod it will take away the 200+ songs I have on there already.
Does anybody know any way for me to get around this from happening? Thanks.
Go to an Apple store and tell them what happened. They should be able to get the current songs off of your iPod and give them to you so you can reload them into iTunes and then back onto your iPod.
If you don't have an Apple store near you, call their customer support line 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273).
No, they can't get your songs off your iPod. You can change your settings in iTunes so it doesn't automatically since and you lose your songs. The Apple store will do nothing.
Unfortunatley the company we know and love, will do absolutely nothing for you. They say there is some sort of piracy law there and won't remove the songs.
However, having experienced the horror of this myself a couple of times and finding no other decent alterative I suggest IGadget.
Its a software program that allows you to remove the songs from your ipod and put them back into iTunes as if nothing changed. It keeps ratings, playcounts, playlists and all that good stuff intact :) It costs a couple of bucks but you can keep it forever, if they update the software you can get the new releases :) http://www.purpleghost.com/index.php?q=igadge t
A really great place for iTunes/IPod help is iLounge. Any problem you have with your stuff someone has already had and remedied in the iLounge forums. When I first got my iPod I was there religiously reading up :) Good luck although you won't need it with iGadget ;)
Oh! And!!!! At iLounge, you can also learn things like how to backup your iTunes library .itl file so that if you need to reformat etc; you can use that file to get everything up and runniong again. How to enable disk use, in case you haven't already and a million other things that keep everything worry free and runningsmoothly.

Really, I know people who they have helped in situations like these by retreiving their songs off of their iPods. That was a couple of years ago, maybe things are different now.
I better make sure that my iTunes backup is up to date!

Well, if it's as simple as turning auto-sync off in iTunes, I feel silly now. LOL
Is it really that simple? LOL Sounds almost too good to be true!
Thank-you
Hmm, this stuff is good to know. One time iTunes decided to up and delete an entire playlist...I had to handpick the songs out again from memory. Also something similar happened a while back when I bought a new computer.
Thanks akasharaine!
Ok, so don't freak out. I've done this twice - and you can get your songs off of your iPod. It's a program called Senuti. It's legit - no spyware, and you can get it offline. If you have less than 1000 songs then you can use the trial version and not have to pay anything.
It will take you through the steps of getting the songs from your iPod and then onto your iTunes. After that, you will have to reinstall everything on your iPod, but it will be good to go.
I'm not sure how it works with playlists. I didn't want to figure it out - so those were lost, but I'm sure there's something.
Make sure before you reformat your iPod that everything is on there - and next time, get an external harddrive and back it up on there:)
Cheers!
I'll give it a go tennisjess- thanks for the info.
If you go into My Computer in windows and click on your iPod, all of the songs are in a series of hidden folders. They're all renamed and out of order, however, so it might be easier to try using software to get the songs off
Your welcome sauvignon!

It's exactly that simple. I turned it off for my sister because she had no idea how to do it. I think iPods are set up to auto-sync, you just have to change the settings.
So is it an auto-sync option in the actual iPod that I have to turn off? Or just in the iTunes program?
go into iTunes-- Menu--- preferences--- devices and then click "Disable auto-syncing"

Again, thanks!
You rock and I'll be trying it out tonight.
Hi. So it worked, I turned off auto sync.
But how do I get the new songs that I just purchased on to my ipod without deleting the old ones.
If I select "sync", will I lose my other 224 songs?
I don't mean this to sound snide because it's not my intention but how long have you had an iPod? haha
Select the songs you want (highlighting them) and then drag them over to the menu bar on the left side where your iPod is shown and just put them in that way. Very simple. If you select sync, you're going to lose the other songs. I recommend never syncing your iPod.
I've had an ipod for a very long time. I have just never had my hard drive crash and I've always just let it auto-sync because all of my music was always in itunes. I am auto-syncing no more.
Hopefully your iPod doesn't die and hard drive crash at the same time. haha That happened to me... was on the subway when it happened and almost cried. Got home and the computer crashed haha
OMG
I must be nuts because I am so electronically inept, but I just bought an ipod touch.... now what?
Can I put the songs from my nano onto my touch? Or do I start from scratch?
Also, any good app suggestions?
