Hi everyone, I'm still a bit new here and am still exploring a lot of the posts. But I'm wondering what other strategies of eating and food prep (other than calorie counting) has worked for you.
I've mentioned in other posts that I've stopped counting calories because I was never very disciplined and would always fall off the wagon. But now I'm eating clean, meaning I eat mostly unprocessed, natural foods. Like fresh fruits & veggies, fresh meat & poultry and complex carbs that I prepare myself. Not something that I cook out of a box that has a million preservatives and ingredients I can't even pronounce on the box. I'm taking a lot of recipes from the books in the Eat-Clean series, specifically Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Cookbook (I've got a pot of Moroccan Pumpkin Soup on the stove right now for later that I made from a fresh pumpkin left over from Halloween that smells delightful!! :)
Eating clean so far (It's been just about a month) has been working so far and I'm still on the wagon! What's working for everyone else?
I suppose I combine 'clean eating' (about 90%) with 'portion-control'. I use calorie-counting as a spot-check and the kitchen scales are invaluable for making sure the portion-sizes stay reasonable. I can easily gain weight on a perfectly clean and wholesome diet otherwise!!!
In addition to using a weigh scale like GI Jane says (invaluable- I recently found out that a slice of good wholesome whole wheat bread from my local bakery actually weighs twice as much as supermarket breads!!!), and practicing portion control, I check in with my stomach and senses every so often when I am eating or thinking of eating. I eat slowly, and usually when I have had enough, my appreciation for the food goes down. Thats when I know I need to put down my fork.
I eat clean most of the time too, but we eat out a lot. My strategies for that are to save a few hundred extra calories for eating out, but also to eat enough beforehand so that I dont pounce on the food at the restaurant.
