Welcome, Cathymetro -- hopefully you will be able to use what you find here on CC.  I'm sorry I can't help you with your anti-depressant question -- hopefully somebody else can.  If you don't get a response, you may try posing the question in the lounge, or in the Health and Support forum -- just don't post it in multiple places.

Good luck

Hi Cathymetro,

I was prescribed Lexapro and took it for about 8 months and gained 40 lbs.  I am now on Wellbutrin to help get my metabolism back where it is supposed to be and help me lose the weight I gained.  I haven't gained any on Wellbutrin (I have only been on it for about 2 months) nor have I lost any weight.

Some people are able to lose weight or at least maintain their weight on Lexapro from what I have read on other sites; however, I can only speak of my experience.

I'm on Exfexor and I have not gained weight from it, but I did get the other side effects of it. I got the lost of appetite and well, lets just say that I have received the sexual side effects of it too and I HATE IT! Sorry, probably too much information. lol

Are you diagnosed clinically depressed?

You do realize that people here are not qualified to recommend antidepressant medication if you are.

If you're not clinically depressed, but just "blue", then maybe a regular vigorous exercise program would help keep your mood enlevated and keep you more centered.

Anyway, all of these things need a prescription. Who will you get that from, if not a shrink?

Have you thought of trying St John's wort or Kava?  They would not make you gain weight or have the many side effects of the drugs...

I can only share my experience here - like udokier said - we're not qualified to make recommendations.

I take effexor and have taken it long term because it was the only thing that worked long term for me. In my case - some weight gain (and other effects - I'm with you kekri84!) was better than the crippling depression.

I utilized a doctor for medication management and got help with a counselor/therapist who was not a physician but a trained therapist (much cheaper and much more human, less clinical) because I needed someone to talk to.

I urge you to get some help with how you are feeling and if you think one doctor is crazy then switch until you find one that isn't. They aren't all bad! and find someone you can talk to. The boards are a good start but a therapist can really help.

My experience has been that citalpram and buspar are wieght neutral, in other words they neither increase nor decrease wieght. I have been taking them for almost a year. Dealing with depression is hell. I have struggled for years! Hope you find a helpful suggestion from someone. I'm here if you need to talk.

I gained weight on Effexor (30 lbs in 8 months). I took it for anxiety and it worked well but found I was always tired on it, couldn't function properly (falling asleep during the day). My weight has always fluctuated from 120-125lbs and I ballooned up to 150 in 8mos. The whole time i was on the meds, I tried dieting and walking every night and couldn't stop gaining. Caused my cholesterol to sky rocket too.

I finally got off of them and I do suffer from mild anxiety now, I am too afraid to start a new medication so I am managing my anxiety with excerise. I have only lost 10 pounds from getting off the meds and this was in the summer. I am also using Omega 3 to help with depression that I was left with.

I don't know how bad your situation is but if you can manage without meds I would try it. if not try something new and let your doctor know your concern of weight gain. I believe a pharmasict may be able to help you too as they know about the side effects moreso than doctors. councelling is highly reccomended if you decided not to go back on meds. It's helped me a whole lot

I agree with everyone in that we can't help diagnose your needs. But I do know that I deal with migraines and am already on medication that I would prefer to not put in my body everyday, so I understand the worry about weight gain and too much loss. Exercise is always is extremely helpful for me, the first 2 weeks of getting in that routine is hard, but once you feel good about it, it becomes second nature... good luck.
