New to the weight loss world

For a long time I lived in a place where exercise was hard to come by, my neighborhood was NOT safe to be walking in, my house was too cramped for workouts, no gym within 20 miles, etc, etc. Lots of excuses. Because of that, I gained a lot of weight. Now, I've just moved to an apartment complex that includes a fitness center and I'm actually excited to get in shape and lose weight.

 

I've JUST started, mind you. Yesterday and today were the first of my workouts. I just want to know what a good work out routine would be.

 

I have little upper body strength, so I'm doing arm weight training with lifting and rowing-type pulls (I don't know the technical terms, sorry!) What is a good set/time for each?

 

On the treadmill, I walk at 3.1 with a small incline. I usually go for 2 miles which is about 41 minutes for me now, but I don't burn very much. (I can't jog much yet either) Is that enough for now?

 

This calorie counter says to have an intake of 1400 calories. Good amount?

 

I want to lose 86 lbs or more by next year. /:

We all start at different points in our exercise routines, so just start with what feels comfortable for you and gradually build up your routine.

Using the incline on a treadmill is a great way to burn extra calories without necessarily having to do exhausting speeds, by the way.  In fact, a person actually burns more calories by using the incline at slower speeds than someone going on a flat surface at a faster speed because going uphill involves force resistance - so your body has to expend more energy to get up that hill, so to speak.

Reducing calories and walking/running on a treadmill incline helped me immensely in my weight loss goals.  Just stick with it and you'll start seeing a difference - it won't be immediate, but it'll be constant and efficient.

Weight training is also good - it doesn't cause weight loss the way walking and running do, but it's great for toning.  I incorporate both weight training and walking/running in my exercise routine also.
