New, Wondering why some foods are incorrect?
hey everyone,
i just joined this week. i have been searching for certain foods and finding that their nutritional facts are incorrect. for instance, i normally eat 2 yoplait original strawberry yogurts in the morning with grape-nuts cereal in them, but both the yoplait yogurt and the grape nuts' nutrition facts were off.
the yoplait had 15 grams of fat instead of the actual amount of 1.5, and the grape nuts' nutritional facts were off by about 5% for each category.
i submitted the revised versions, but is there more i can do? it's kind of a pain to have to keep typing these in because the searchable ones are wrong. do people actually check the submissions?
thanks!
~Nick
I've found a couple of inconsistencies, but mostly things are correct. Be sure to check the amounts that each reading is for. Did the yoplait data show up for the same amount of yogurt as what you ate? Did you eat a serving or the entire tub? Sometimes people overlook these things at first.
Also, remember that some products are made slightly differently in other countries and could cause slight variances in nutrition. If there are multiple entries for a product (grape nuts), check each one until you find the one that matches. The second grape nuts entry that comes up when I search matches the box sitting in my cabinet; the first is a little off.
Other than that, all you can do is submit for revisions and/or enter your own info.
I make a point to check the values of most foods and if it is off too much I add my own version of the food and tag it. Most of the time the sodium is really off.
-serving sizes change.
-product formulas change with different ingredients either being added, subtracted, or substituted. Sometimes ingredients are no longer available.
-product formulas change from one country to another.
Last week there was a study reported in the news stating that formulas for many if not most boxed cereals in Canada were higher in sodium than any other country including Europe. If the nutritional information does not match what is in the data base then you can input it manually. Click on food log then (on the right hand side you will see "add it here") in blue. Input information there. I hope that helps.
